This classic Adult Swim series reimagines Hanna-Barbera characters as staff members of Sebben & Sebben law firm. Harvey T. Birdman, a former superhero, is one of the lawyers on staff. His clients are portrayed by characters also familiar to those who’ve watched Hanna-Barbera cartoons/

Full of bizarre and absurd circumstances, the show is an idiosyncratic throwback to the heyday of cartoon superheroes. After it’s original run, a special aired in 2018 entitled Harvey Birdman: Attorney General.

7 Duckman (1994 – 1997)

This underrated cartoon aired on the USA Network. Seinfeld’s Jason Alexander voices the title character, an incompetent private detective who thinks he’s slick and charming.

Duckman lives in Los Angeles with his three sons, sister, and mother. The show’s gritty, spooky animation style makes Los Angeles look like a cartoon noir dreamscape. It originated with a Dark Horse comic from Everett Peck, who also created the cartoon.

6 Drawn Together (2004 – 2007; 2010)

Another classic cartoon character mash-up, Drawn Together aired on Comedy Central. A post-modern reinterpretation of mainstream sitcoms, most of the show is set up like reality television.

Mel Wax runs the aptly titled Hopeless Pictures, a struggling independent studio. The show relies on scripted conversations recorded over the telephone, which are then animated in goofy ways.

3 Big Mouth (2017 – )

Another very successful Netflix cartoon, Big Mouth has made multiple best-of lists since it debuted. Comedian Nick Kroll developed the show with Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin, and Jennifer Flackett.

Inspired by Kroll and Goldberg’s childhoods, Big Mouth follows Nick Birch and Andrew Glouberman, two 7th graders growing up in New York City. Despite the characters’ ages, the show’s humor is designed for adults.

2 I Am Not An Animal (2004)

Utterly peculiar and at times nonsensical, I Am Not an Animal is the work of comedic British screenwriter Peter Baynham. The series’ six episodes center around a group of intelligent animals who are rescued from an experimental laboratory run by a vivisectionist.

The beastly creatures are left to fend for themselves in the world, one brought to life with insane collage-like computer animation. British stars like Steve Coogan and Simon Pegg voice the characters.

1 Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist (1995 – 2002)

BoJack Horseman includes quite a few therapy sessions, so the best-animated series about a psychiatrist to ever exist deserves a spot on this list. Dr. Katz, voiced by Jonathan Katz, dedicates his life to listening to the woes of his clients over six seasons.

The computer-animated series was made with a software called Squigglevision, which results in constantly moving lines and contours matched with solid blocks of color.
