10 Amazing Promotional Posters Of Disney Villains (Like Lion Kings Scar)

It’s pretty common knowledge by this point that, in a given Disney film, the villain is almost always going to take center stage. After all, it’s characters like Scar, Jafar, Ursula, and Maleficent that are almost always the most interesting characters in a Disney movie. They’re the ones that keep the story moving forward, and the viewer always wants to know more about them and what turned them onto the path of villainy.

While most movie posters focus on the hero and his/her heroic exploits, there are also quite a few that, rightfully, show the key role that the villain has to play.

10 Talk About Sinister

Everyone knows the story of Snow White, in which the Evil Queen sets out to poison her stepdaughter out of jealousy of her beauty. The most visually compelling aspect of this film is, of course, the form that she takes when she disguises herself as a hag, and this movie poster magnificently captures the ugly persona that clearly lurks just beneath her beautiful outer appearance (in fact, she’s even more hideous in this poster than she is in the actual film).

9 Tall, Dark, and Handsome

One of the most noteworthy aspects of the live-action version of Aladdin is the total makeover of Jafar. Instead of being an older man with a decidedly mellifluous voice, in this film, he’s notable for his smoldering good looks. He’s still the same power-hungry character, however, desperate to claim the throne of Agrabah for himself, and this poster manages to show both the sexy and the maniacal sides of his personality (and Iago also makes a cameo, though he doesn’t play a very large part in the film).

8 Scar Has a Lean and Hungry Look

Scar is another Disney villain who experienced a lot of changes in his transition from animated villain to live-action antagonist. Jeremy Irons imbued Scar with a certain flamboyance, but most of that has been boiled away in the live-action film.

As this poster shows, he’s quite emaciated, and he really does seem like the kind of lion that would do terrible things out of sheer hunger, both for power and for food. He’s quite the sinister creature and definitely one of the best things about the film.

7 Looming Frollo

The Hunchback of Notre Dame is one of those Disney films that doesn’t get nearly enough credit for just how artistically and thematically mature it is. Central to its narrative is the character of Frollo, a judge who is so consumed by his lust for the young woman Esmerelda that he’ll do anything to gain her love. In this poster, he literally looms over all of the other characters, a reminder of the power that he wields for most of the movie.

6 A New Mulan

The new Mulan promises to be a truly dramatic remake of the original animated film. The darkness and grittiness that was present in that version appears to have been brought right out into the open in this live-action version, and that includes the villain, who is now a character named Bori Khan. This poster makes it clear that he’s a hard-bitten sort, and it seems that Mulan is going to have her work cut out for her defeating him.

5 The Wise Guy

In many Disney films, the villain is forbidding and dangerous and, almost without exception, utterly devoid of humor or a sense of fun. One exception to that rule is Hades from Hercules, who is played with wise-cracking panache by actor James Woods. This poster does a pretty good job of capturing Hades’ devil-may-care attitude, as well as that little bit of anger that always lurks beneath the surface, just waiting to burst into flame.

4 A Very Angry Kitty

Shere Khan has always sort of existed in the second string of Disney villains (despite the fact that he was played by the urbane George Sanders, whose voice, like that of so many Disney villains, is simply a pleasure to listen to). Idris Elba brings a rougher edge to his vocal characterization, and his Shere Khan is a tiger that one definitely doesn’t want to get into a fight with.

Scarred and brutal, he’s quite capable of killing anyone and anything that happens to get in his way.

3 That VooDoo He Does So Well

The Princess and the Frog was a bit of a throwback when it came out, given that it was done with traditional animation rather than the CGI that was increasingly common at various animation studios. As always, the villain was one of the best things about the film, and it’s not hard to see why. Dr. Facilier is a villain cast out of the old Disney mold, flamboyant and a true delight to watch, as this poster makes abundantly clear.

2 Mistress Of Evil, Indeed

Maleficent was always one of those villains that everyone loved. With her angular cheekbones and her ability to take offense at the slightest thing (such as not being invited to a birthday party), she was one of the most fabulous creations of the early days of Disney. Fast forward almost fifty years, and she ended up getting not just one but two movies dedicated to her backstory and her continuing adventures. In this poster, as in the films, Angelina Jolie simply owns the role.

1 A Monster In White

It takes a pretty extraordinary kind of evil to dedicate yourself to slaughtering puppies so that you can make a coat of their fur, and yet that’s precisely what Cruella de Vil sets out to do. This poster recognizes that she’s an absolutely fabulous villain (even if she is a monster) and thus makes sure that she occupies most of the frame. Hey, if you’re going to be evil, she figures that you might as well look your best while doing it.
