10 BehindTheScenes Facts About Last Night In Soho

Director Edgar Wright is best known for his fast editing, synchronized music, scenes in pubs, and heavily stylized action, and with that in mind, Last Night In Soho is the most Edgar Wright of all his movies. The movie features all of his trademarks in spades, but it also covers very new ground for the director, as it’s his first shot at full-on horror.

Because the movie is so unique in the director’s filmography, there are tons of interesting stories from the very inception of the idea of the narrative. Between changing the names twice and pitching the movie on a bar crawl, even the behind-the-scenes stories are typically Wright.

The Writing Process Was Similar To 1917

10 BehindTheScenes Facts About Last Night In Soho

Edgar Wright usually writes all of the movies that he directs, and while that’s still true for Last Night In Soho, he did have a helping hand. Krysty Wilson-Cairns co-wrote the screenplay with Wright, and her other credits include 1917, one of the best war movies of the 21st century.

The writer likened writing the horror flick to the writing process of 1917, as she says that “the style of both of them is to let you into the characters’ inner worlds.” Because of this, she called the process of writing the two movies different, but at the same time, very similar in some ways.

Anya Taylor-Joy Previously Auditioned For Another Edgar Wright Movie

10 BehindTheScenes Facts About Last Night In Soho

Anya Taylor-Joy is a self-proclaimed Edgar Wright fan, and it shows, as she also auditioned for another one of the auteur’s movies. Years ago, Taylor-Joy tried to get a role in Baby Driver, and while she doesn’t divulge exactly which role she’s referring to, it’s most likely the part of Deborah.

That makes sense, as both Taylor-Joy and Lily James, who plays Deborah, have very similar profiles. However, all’s well that ends well, as the actor went on to earn the role of Sandie in Last Night in Soho, one of the best characters in the movie.

The Original Titles

10 BehindTheScenes Facts About Last Night In Soho

Although Last Night In Soho sounds like such a perfect title and is totally fitting for the movie, that wasn’t the original name, according to Indie Wire. In fact, it wasn’t even Wright’s second choice either.

The film was originally titled Red Light Area, but the director realized he had to change that, as people could confuse it with the Cillian Murphy-starring movie, Red Lights. Wright then came up with the idea of calling it The Night Has A Thousand Eyes, but he then learned that the wordy title belongs to another movie too. So he finally landed on his third choice, Last Night In Soho.

Quentin Tarantino Inspired The Movie’s Title

10 BehindTheScenes Facts About Last Night In Soho

It was almost miraculous how the final title of Wright’s new movie came to be, and it was all because of a conversation with Quentin Tarantino about Death Proof. While talking about his 2007 movie, they moved on to the film’s music, and Tarantino asked Wright if he had ever heard the song, “Last Night in Soho.”

It was perfect timing, as Wright just happened to be working on a movie based in Soho, and that he was desperately scrambling to find a new title after he was unable to use his first two ideas. So Tarantino inadvertently named the 2021 movie.

10 BehindTheScenes Facts About Last Night In Soho

And her Hollywood domination will continue, as she’ll be starring in the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road spin-off, Furiosa.

Though Fury Road barely escaped development hell, Furiosa is going full steam ahead now that the titular character has been cast. Wright Pitched The Movie Before The World’s End

10 BehindTheScenes Facts About Last Night In Soho

Last Night In Soho has already been delayed due to the pandemic, as it was originally set for release over a year ago in September 2020. However, if all the stars were aligned, the movie could have been made and released a decade ago.

According to Uproxx, Edgar Wright pitched the film to his producers before he even shot The World’s End, the third movie in the “Cornetto Trilogy.” Wright says that the idea was even percolating years before that too. But that simply seems to be the way the director works, as he also says that he had been developing Baby Driver in his head for 22 years.

It’s Influenced By Wright’s Parents’ Stories Of The ’60s

10 BehindTheScenes Facts About Last Night In Soho

As the movie travels back in time to the 1960s, there’s clearly such a huge amount of research and effort that’s gone into making Soho look decade-accurate. According to The New York Times, it all started with Wright listening to his parents’ coming-of-age stories from the time period.

Wright then became obsessed with the decade, and he started rifling through their old record collections and getting lost in the time period through the music. This also explains the huge soundtrack for the movie, as Soho is full of swinging ’60s tracks.

Wright Pitched The Idea To Co-Writer Wilson-Cairns While On A Pub Crawl

10 BehindTheScenes Facts About Last Night In Soho

As hard work as making a movie seems, and as professional as producers try to make people think they are, a lot of things in the movie industry happen off the cuff. There’s no better example of that than the way Edgar Wright pitched Krysty Wilson-Cairns the movie and how he convinced her to work with him.

According to a podcast she featured on for Empire, Wilson-Cairns says that Wright pitched the idea to her while on a pub crawl across Soho. It’s perfectly in character for Wright too, as pubs popping up throughout his movies has become one of the director’s many trademarks.

Taylor-Joy Wast Starstruck On Set

10 BehindTheScenes Facts About Last Night In Soho

It isn’t easy to make an already famous actor starstruck, as they meet so many other famous people in their everyday lives. However, according to Cinema Blend, Anya Taylor-Joy let her guard down when filming the movie, and she ended up being starstruck by the least suspecting actors

It wasn’t a smile from George Clooney or even Matt Smith, who also stars in the movie, but Taylor Joy was shaken when she met Oliver and James Phelps. The twin actors played Fred and George Weasley in the Harry Potter movies, and Taylor-Joy “went all fan-girl” when she realized who they were.

Matt Smith Had To Learn To Dance For The Movie

In an interview with Looper, Matt Smith explains that one of the many things that drew him to the creepy time-traveling movie was the instant classic dance that comes midway through. He explained that he “thought it sounded really cool.”

But oddly enough, despite taking on the role for the dancing, the actor had absolutely no idea how to dance. And though there were lessons from an expert choreographer, Smith mentions that it took him a lot longer to catch on to the moves than everyone else.
