10 Beloved Movies That Dont Deserve Their Bad Rotten Tomatoes Score

Rotten Tomatoes has become quite the barometer for measuring how well received a film is amongst both audiences and critics. However, while the platform is a great way of getting the general consensus on a movie, it’s not always that accurate when it comes to the genuine emotional reaction of fans.

There are plenty of cult hits, family favorites and beloved movies that have garnered Rotten scores on the Tomatometer. Some of these may be considered classics today, despite their initial reception. Others still divide opinion, but there’s certainly still an audience for them. Either way, many fans are still talking about these films today in a positive way.

10 Daddy Day Care (2003) 27%

Eddie Murphy’s career is certainly varied when it comes to the projects he has taken on. While Daddy Day Care does have its fair share of haters, there’s also a whole generation of people who grew up with the film and still love it today.

Perhaps it’s the chaotic nature of the comedy, the brilliant one-liners from the kids or the chemistry of the cast, but the family-friendly Daddy Day Care definitely delivers in what it set out to do. While its sequels aren’t as appreciated, the original somehow still stands the test of time for those who adore its cheesy nature.

9 Step Brothers (2008) 55%

10 Beloved Movies That Dont Deserve Their Bad Rotten Tomatoes Score

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly both have a number of projects that Rotten Tomatoes has deemed unwatchable. Yet, Step Brothers really shouldn’t be on that list considering the cult following it still enjoys today. The script is hilarious and endlessly quotable and the partnership of these two leads just works.

There’s always demand to see more from these two characters and that’s due to the brilliant writing and the wonderful and wacky performances. Any comedy that can still make viewers laugh over a decade later is definitely doing its job.

8 Taken (2008) 59%

10 Beloved Movies That Dont Deserve Their Bad Rotten Tomatoes Score

Taken might be one of the most quoted films of all time. Everyone knows the infamous phone call in which Liam Neeson warns his daughter’s captors about the hell they are about to face.

The franchise continued, to diminishing returns. Yet, the original, which launched the whole series and went on to establish an action icon, in many respects, definitely doesn’t deserve a Rotten score. The legacy of Taken alone should be enough to demonstrate how wrong the critics are.

7 Jingle All The Way (1996) 17%

10 Beloved Movies That Dont Deserve Their Bad Rotten Tomatoes Score

Another movie that still draws a mixed reception, Jingle All The Way is definitely a festive film that people either love or hate. There are enough people who have grown up with the holiday comedy, though, who still sing its praises like a well-rehearsed caroling group.

The film contains a few unforgettable lines from the lead actor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, especially when it concerns his wife’s baked goods. No one in the cast reigns it in either, with Sinbad, in particular, going all out in his portrayal of the postman, Myron.

6 Spaceballs (1987) 56%

10 Beloved Movies That Dont Deserve Their Bad Rotten Tomatoes Score

When talking about cult classics, it’s difficult not to look to the science fiction genre, which has hundreds of underrated movies, each with its own following of diehard fans. Spaceballs is a comedy juggernaut that fits in this category well.

Every scene builds the momentum of the piece, as this Star Wars parody pokes fun at everything sci-fi fans have come to love. The well-known tropes and genre certainties are flipped on their head in the most genius of ways here. A script this clever should never be considered Rotten. It’s also, of course, important to mention the fantastic work of the legendary Rick Moranis.

5 Bad Boys (1995) 42%

10 Beloved Movies That Dont Deserve Their Bad Rotten Tomatoes Score

Bad Boys helped to cement the career of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in Hollywood and it is one of the most celebrated buddy-cop action comedies in history. It spawned an ongoing franchise that has recently enjoyed a period of rejuvenation.

Despite its endlessly watchable action beats and the chemistry of the two leads, critics somehow found it difficult to praise the beloved popcorn blockbuster. Garnering a Rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes, Bad Boys is nonetheless celebrated as a benchmark of its genre.

4 Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) 49%

10 Beloved Movies That Dont Deserve Their Bad Rotten Tomatoes Score

Disney has created a long line of iconic movies, yet Atlantis is still overlooked. Although it seems to be in line for a live-action reboot in the next few years, critics have deemed it unworthy of any attention. Fans have continually praised it for its bold storytelling and quirky characters.

Its animation alone is absolutely gorgeous, and the mythology built up here around the lost city of Atlantis is truly extraordinary. It’s also important to mention the brilliant score that accompanies audiences throughout the adventure. This journey to the depths of the Earth definitely isn’t Rotten.

3 A Knight’s Tale (2001) 59%

10 Beloved Movies That Dont Deserve Their Bad Rotten Tomatoes Score

Heath Ledger has an impressive filmography to his name, but a cult hit that will continue to be loved is A Knight’s Tale. A classic fairytale and sword and sandal drama, it feels timeless and akin to the likes of The Princess Bride.

Fans of A Knight’s Tale will continue to enjoy its lead in his knight-in-shining-armor role, as the young squire rises up the ranks of society disguised in his new identity. It’s a great premise and one that was executed perfectly, putting a twist on all the traditional genre tropes. It’s a shame that critics don’t seem to agree, though.

2 National Treasure (2004) 46%

10 Beloved Movies That Dont Deserve Their Bad Rotten Tomatoes Score

National Treasure is one of the Disney projects that has fans most eager for a reboot. The idea of a group of treasure hunters using their detective skills to find clues hidden amongst America’s most prized history is definitely one to get excited about.

Add this to a great script, some notable villains, a superb cast and the feeling of adventure audiences get from watching it and it’s clear to see why the National Treasure franchise is still talked about now. While a reboot might be in the cards, even a Rotten score won’t stop audiences from hoping for a straight-out sequel.

1 Hook (1991) 26%

Directed by Steven Spielberg and packed full of award-winning actors, such as Robin Williams, Maggie Smith, Dustin Hoffman and Julia Roberts, Hook is based upon the iconic legend of Peter Pan. Every element of the film is truly one of a kind, and yet it’s somehow considered Rotten.

Hook continues to have a celebrated legacy and is perhaps one of the films that Williams’ is most lovingly remembered for. It’s charming, full of joy, yet also dark in places. It twists the fairytale genre and shows that it’s ok to grow up, but only if one can still hold on to the child inside.
