10 Best American Gods Characters Ranked

Starz gave the disappointing news of the cancellation of American Gods just a week after the third season’s finale. The show had enjoyed a moderate number of loyal fans since its first season, with everyone hoping to see Wednesday turn the tables on the New Gods. Fans hoped Wednesday would set up Shadow Moon as a powerful god to bridge the old and the new in the end, but that didn’t happen.

There are rumors about the producers continuing the show somewhere else or concluding it with a movie or event series, though. The show’s loyal fan base can be traced back to its interesting main characters whose behavior is totally unpredictable. So far, no one can be labeled as the ultimate villain or hero of American Gods. Here’s how the main characters compare.

12 Mr. World

10 Best American Gods Characters Ranked

Being Wednesday’s nemesis, fans wouldn’t expect Mr. World to be likable, but, even with Wednesday out of the picture, they can’t help but hate him. He is just a bully, threatening his minions and allies and always annoying those around him.

He is very impulsive and won’t hesitate to bash his minions’ heads if he deems them incompetent. His method of fighting was also not great. He chose to kill Zorya, an innocent member of Wednesday’s camp, instead of taking on Wednesday by himself. When Laura finally decided to do what he couldn’t, he used her and then betrayed her.

11 Czernoborg

10 Best American Gods Characters Ranked

Czernoborg was actually serious about crushing Shadow’s skull with his hammer because he lost a game of checkers. He is a very unreasonable character who never weighs his options before acting. The death of Zorya only made him worse as he lost sense of scale, making enemies with everyone, including Wednesday.

He finally regained his senses and decided to work with Wednesday, but he couldn’t protect him from Laura Moon’s spear. He was more just an angry character with a hammer than a god.

10 Technical Boy

10 Best American Gods Characters Ranked

It is not clear how Technical Boy came to be in Mr. World’s service, but he was obviously serving in the wrong camp. He was more at home with Shadow in their short alliance in search of Bilquis than he ever was with Mr. World. His behavior before meeting Shadow was similar to that of Mr. World, though, always assuming everyone was less than him and making enemies with everyone, even those that could help him.

Technical Boy is smart and powerful but extremely arrogant. He bullied Shadow when he first met him, yet Shadow had done nothing to aggravate him. He then was rude to Bilquis and underestimated her power leading to his own destruction.

9 Mr. Wednesday

10 Best American Gods Characters Ranked

Wednesday would have made a great character if he ever cared for anyone else but himself. When the show started, Wednesday seemed to be on top of his game and better at keeping things together than Mad Sweeney. However, after the revelations over the seasons, it is clear that Wednesday is a bully and a liar, just like Mr. World. The only difference is that Wednesday takes good care of those in his camp and his family.

Wednesday hired Sweeney to kill Laura Moon for no reason, then entrapped the poor leprechaun. He was willing to sacrifice Zorya and the other lesser gods in his camp just to convince the Old Gods to fight for him. He might even have used his own son as a sacrifice for his rebirth in the show’s final season. He is just so selfish.

8 Mr. Ibis

10 Best American Gods Characters Ranked

Mr. Ibis is a mysterious character whose intentions are difficult to predict. He is not impulsive and doesn’t make any enemies either. He hasn’t made it clear whether he is fighting for Wednesday or supporting the New Gods.

The one great thing about him is that he is very reasonable and hasn’t hurt anyone in the show so far. He helped Laura after Wednesday killed her and even helped Shadow realize his importance. He is always willing to help anyone that needs answers.

7 Mad Sweeney

10 Best American Gods Characters Ranked

Laura Moon was willing to sacrifice her newfound life for Mad Sweeney because she realized that he was a better person than Wednesday. Mad Sweeney owed a debt to Odin that he obviously couldn’t pay, and it got him killed. However, without Wednesday’s influence, Sweeney would have made one of the most lovable gods in the show.

He had personal struggles, including a lack of worshipers, but he was compassionate enough to save Laura even when he had the chance to just take his coin and walk away.

6 Mr. Nancy

10 Best American Gods Characters Ranked

Yes, Nancy’s jokes are too much sometimes, but he was one of the wisest gods in the show. He made it clear to Wednesday that he would support him if he promised to protect those he cared about in return.

Nancy never fell for Wednesday’s lies and preferred to stay independent. He is never annoying, and always provides a suit for those that need it. His smile and jokes also make him the warmest character in the show.

5 Bilquis

10 Best American Gods Characters Ranked

The Queen of Sheebah started the show as a monster that would consume as many humans as it took to survive. She even sided with Mr. World, becoming the first Old God to betray the crew, but truth found her when she consumed the wrong worshiper. She finally put Technical Boy in his place and rediscovered herself as the bringer of joy.

Fans can’t blame her for her past crimes because she had forgotten her roots. She was great friends with everyone that had good intentions, including Shadow and Ibis. When she rediscovered herself and realized her purpose, she became an understanding person and even set out to save Shadow Moon.

4 Laura Moon

10 Best American Gods Characters Ranked

Laura Moon was proof that human beings do not need the gods to be good people. She made a mistake and caused Shadow to go to prison, then cheated on him with his best friend before getting killed by a god. That was the summary of bad Laura, but after three seasons, Laura was redeemed into the most compassionate character in the show.

Death transformed her into a better person, always fighting to bring some good. She found a friend in Sweeney despite their history and even gave up her short life to save his. She also included Shadow Moon in her protection list in her deal with Mr. World. She was more caring than all the gods in the show.

3 Salim

10 Best American Gods Characters Ranked

Salim is the other human being that outperformed the gods in the show. He was in love with the Jinn, and Wednesday took him away, but Salim wasn’t as vengeful as Laura. He always kept his cool and looked on the brighter side of everything, even when things were falling apart for him.

He was the morality check for Laura Moon, helping her rediscover her confidence in her lowest moment. Salim was just so innocent. He never seemed to understand the forces he was up against, but somehow, his positive mindset saw him through all of it.

2 Cordelia

10 Best American Gods Characters Ranked

Cordelia is the only person in American Gods that came to love Mr. Wednesday. She was also the best partner Shadow Moon ever found in the show. There was just no reason to hate her. Wednesday made everyone that worked for him angry by betraying them or using them in one way or another.

Cordelia, on the other hand, never gave up on the old man, even when she discovered that he was a cunning god. She helped him with his doomed battle plans and even saved him multiple times. She also became friends with Shadow and got him to perform the burial rights for Wednesday.

1 Shadow Moon

Shadow Moon is always willing to make a sacrifice for other people, including Wednesday, who had abandoned his fatherly duties to him as a kid and then ruined his life as an adult. He was the older brother and wiser man in the room whenever he was around the often quarrelsome gods. He was the most forgiving person in the show. He had no reason to come to Bilquis’ aid when she was kidnapped, but he did it anyway.

Finally, when Wednesday died, Shadow decided to offer himself up to the painful ritual of his burial, which may have killed him. Throughout the show, Shadow fought to prove to the other gods that he was better than his father. He would make the perfect bridge between the Old Gods and the New.
