10 Best Animated Movie Princesses That Aren’t Disney

Disney princesses get all the credit, but there are plenty of fantastic animated princesses that aren’t in Disney movies. Here are 10 of the best.

Many popular animated movie fairytales have enchanting princesses and they aren’t always Disney royals! Cinderella, Belle, Ariel, Tiana, and so many loved beauties in Disney films have taken over the scene for princesses in children’s movies. So much so, that it’s easy to draw a blank when asked “What other princesses are there apart from Disney?”

The fact is, there are many princesses in kid’s flicks that have hit the scene and become popular among young viewers. Take a look at this list of non-Disney princesses in children’s movies that have captivated fans of all ages.

10 Anastasia – Anastasia

The 1997 Fox animation release, Anastasia, is an exciting musical drama starring some pretty famous voice actors, including Meg Ryan, Kurstin Dunst, and John Cusack. Anastasia is the last surviving heir of the Romanov Royal family. After the sorcerer Rasputin sells his soul to curse the Romanov family, vowing to wipe them off the face of the Earth, a revolution ensues and Anastasia is knocked unconscienced and separated from her grandmother, the only other survivor.

Waking up with amnesia, Anastasia spends the rest of the storyline searching for the family she cannot remember and discovering who she truly is. This empowering princess definitely deserves mention and praise.

9 Odette – The Swan Princess

The animated film, The Swan Princess, has it all. From two kingdoms wanting to be united, a prince and a princess destined to marry, a sorcerer who turns into a fire-breathing beast, a curse, and true love’s declaration, it’s a hard task turning away from this storyline.

Princess Odette’s carriage is attacked by the Great Animal and she is kidnapped and cursed to be a swan by moonlight. That is until Prince Derik comes to her rescue and promises to make a vow of everlasting love to save her. The Sorcerer Rothbart doesn’t make it easy for Odette to have a happy ending, but as all fairytales go, love prevails.

8 Fiona – Shrek

In the Shrek franchise, fans get to know more about Fiona’s life. She is the princess who was cursed with being an ogre by night and so was sent away by her parents to await the day her true love would kiss her misfortune away.

What she didn’t expect was that an ogre would rescue her from the highest tower of a castle riddled with human remains from the dragon’s attacks. Fiona finally gets her happily-ever-after as a married ogre with ogre babies and all! She is not the typical princess, but she does remind audiences that everyone is deserving of a royal life, no matter how unconventional they may be.

7 Tuptim – The King And I

Tuptim doesn’t become a princess until the end of The King And I. After secretly meeting with the king’s son, Prince Chulalongkorn, they fall in love and are sad to find out that their love is forbidden. After a story of tradition, cultural differences, lies, treason, and love, the king is attacked. But before he dies, he speaks to his son and gives him his blessing and permission to marry Tuptim.

Viewers don’t get to follow the new princesses’ life, but knowing that a young servant girl fell in love and became a princess is satisfactory enough.

6 Thumbelina – Thumbelina

The movie Thumbelina is a tricky one when deciding whether it is a true Disney movie. It’s based on the fairytale by Hans Christian Anderson and was originally released by Warner Brothers. Twenty-five years after its release, Disney bought the film rights to the movie, so while it is now technically a Disney film, that’s not how it began.

Thumbelina is a tiny girl who is kidnaped by some selfish toads to be forced into marriage. With the help of some animal friends and some fairies, she finds a place to fit in and even finds love with Cornelius, the fairy Prince. Her story is an adventure that leads her to discover her self-confidence. She is the tiniest princess on the list and fans can’t help but love her story.

5 Marina – Sinbad: Legend Of The Seven Seas

Movie fans might think that Sinbad: Legend of The Seven Seas is a Disney movie, but it was actually produced and distributed by DreamWorks. The princess in this story is Lady Marina (Catherine Zeta-Jones). Well, she is never actually officially granted the title of a princess but for the duration of the entire movie, she is betrothed and ready to marry Prince Proteus.

She does her best to keep her feelings loyal to Proteus, but by the end of her adventure with Sinbad (Brad Pitt) to retrieve the Book of Peace from Eris (Michelle Pfeiffer), she has fallen in love with the sea and with Sinbad. Marina is a royal at heart and is, without a doubt, one of the most loved non-Disney princesses.

4 Princess Irene – The Princess And The Goblin

Princess Irene may not be a Disney princess, but like other Disney royals, she goes from being a damsel in distress to a hero. As the title suggests, goblins are hiding underground ready to attack the human world, kidnap the princess, and force themselves as rulers over all the land.

Princess Irene bands together with a few friends, including Curdie the miner’s son, her pet cat Turnip, and the spirit of her grandmother to thwart the goblins’ plan and rescue her kingdom and humanity. There’s a lot of adventure in Irene’s life and in the end, her bravery shines making her a princess to reckon with.

3 Princess Bala – Antz

In the popular animation Antz, Princess Bala (Sharon Stone) isn’t very impressed by Z (Woody Allen), but they do have something in common: they both feel that they have a greater calling.

After they accidentally fall down a garbage chute, they decide to search for the legendary “Insectopia.” Together, they go on a journey that helps them discover their meaning in life, as well as their love for each other. Princess Bala is held captive twice in this film, but through all of her tribulations, she is victorious in the end and is granted the title of a hero.

2 Zipporah – The Prince Of Egypt

Another DreamWorks children’s animation film is The Prince of Egypt. Moses (Val Kilmer) is abandoned in a river by his sister Miriam (Sandra Bullock) in order to save his life. After he is discovered by the queen, he is raised as a prince and son of the Pharaoh.

He grows up to be a good hearted-man and after defending a slave and accidentally killing a guard, he runs away in fear of his crime. In the desert, he finds a nomadic people and marries Zipporah. As Moses is the adopted son of the Pharaoh, that makes Zipporah the princess of Egypt, whether she wants to be or not. Her strength and trust in Moses help him to regain his confidence and take back his people.

1 Princess Camille – Little Nemo: Adventures In Slumberland

Most animation fans are familiar with Finding Nemo, but this movie is not related at all. Little Nemo follows the story of a young boy who wishes to attend a circus. After falling asleep he enters into a dream world called Slumberland. There he meets King Morpheus and the lovely Princess Camille. Nemo must defeat the nightmare king and become the heir to the throne.

Princess Camille helps him along the way by touring him through Slumberland and joining him on his mission to rescue King Morpheus and save the kingdom. The fearless Princess Camille shares a kiss with Nemo at the end of the movie and Nemo wakes from his adventure-filled dream.
