9 The Other Mother – Coraline

Those with arachnophobia beware. The anthropomorphic Old Mother that haunts the dark fantasy of Coraline’s titular character will leave you squirming in discomfort. Shot using stop-motion capture, creating a slightly stilted movement in the characters, when combined with the hollow black button eyes of the Old Mother, she has a strikingly eldritch look.

Adapted from the graphic novel by the incomparable Neil Gaiman, Coraline stands out for its uncanny vision. The totality of its eeriness rests in its matriarchal antagonist.

8 Syndrome – The Incredibles

One of the more industrious villains of the decade, Syndrome, is the animated film genre’s take on a celebrity capitalist. His evil scheme is to covertly terrorize the world with an android of his device, the Omnidroid, and then defeat it, rising to fame as a hero. Under the pretense of his newfound popularity, he’ll sell the superhero gadgets he uses to defeat the Omnidroid so he can become mega-rich.

Meanwhile, Syndrome has been privately killing the world’s retired superheroes through trial runs of the Omnidroid, fulfilling the philanthropic duties the one-percenters like himself owe to society

7 Vincent Volaju – Cowboy Bebop: The Movie

A biological terrorist working in the shadows cast from the presumption that he’s dead, Vincent Volaju captures the attention of a misfit group of bandit hunters led by Spike Spiegel. Vincent has a deep backstory that rationalizes his motives, which draws strong allegorical comparisons to real-life events. Vincent isn’t all pathos and no bite.

He’s part of some great fight scenes that rival any live-action counterpart, proving him to be a formidable foe. Part of his greatness as a villain is also his biggest crime, at least against the viewer, since, in the end, he steals your heart.

6 Seijiro Inui – Paprika

The last feature film to come from the late great Satoshi Kon has one of the most nightmarish villains of the 2000s. Seijiro Inui is a hijacker of dreams, using the foldable and collapsible dimensions of a world that adheres to dream logic to wreak havoc against the other characters.

Also, for this reason, he has a multiplicity of forms that range from his real-world persona to an enormous shadow monster of titanic proportions. There is a degree of inventiveness and imagination to Inui that distinguishes him from other contending evil-doers.

5 Autopilot – Wall-E

Drawing inspiration from comparable science fiction enemies such as HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Machines from The Matrix, the creators of Wall-E imagined their antagonist as having the same mark of villainy: a singular red eye. Don’t worry, Prince Farquaad, you may be a son of a gun sometimes, but we still love you for all the things you hate about yourself.

3 The Machines – Animatrix

For those familiar with The Matrix Trilogy, you’ll know that the machines reign over humankind in the Wachowski’s dystopian technological vision of the future. While the machines are already established villains in the trilogy, their representation in the Animatrix shows their origins as sympathetic victims of a genocide.

After their resurrection and defeat of the humans in the machine wars, they become the parasitic tyrants familiar to those who have watched live-action films. There are a variety of animation styles and iterations of the machines in the Animatrix. The film is a feast for the eyes of fans of the series and animation in general.

2 Sephiroth – Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children

When video game director and art designer Tetsuya Nomura had the opportunity to bring his most beloved hero and nemesis to the big screen, every fanboy and girl of Final Fantasy 7 replayed the game in earnest anticipation of the film’s release. An aura of foreboding thickens around the film’s events, no matter the adversity the heroes face because audiences know Sephiroth waits brooding in the wing.

When Sephiroth and Cloud inevitably clash epically, the One-Winged Angel is as charismatic and powerful as only he can be. Sephiroth doesn’t appear until the final half-hour of the film. Still, when his malevolent theme song strikes at his unveiling, conjuring so many fond memories and uncaging the butterflies in our stomachs, one realizes Sephiroth is a villain that helped define a generation.

1 Kaonashi (No Face) – Spirited Away

Spirited Away has worldwide appeal as one of the greatest animated films of all time. One of the most recognizable and iconic images of the film is the face of its man-eating villain, Kaonashi, or No-Face as it is known in the English dub. The character’s pale complexion, blank expression, and blubbering black body symbolize the monstrosity of over-consumption.

Minimalist in design, No Face has an air of mystery, adding a tension of unpredictability to every scene. In addition to its look, No Face moves like a phantom, disappearing and reappearing ominously. Few other villains are as intelligent yet simultaneously grotesque.
