Kensho Ono has had a long and successful career thus far, with roles in television dramas, live theater, video games, and film. His most famous role in the latter may be his performance as the dubbed voice of Harry Potter in all eight Japanese film adaptations.

His anime voice acting roles have been no less prominent, leaning towards characters who are outwardly gentle and calm but harbor ferocious determination to either protect or destroy. With roles like Giorno Giovanna from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and Phichit Chulanont from Yuri!!! on Ice, Kensho Ono is not a voice that audiences will forget in a hurry.

10 Slaine Troyard (Aldnoah.Zero)

Voiced by Zach Aguilar in the English dub of Aldnoah.Zero, Slaine is the closest companion of Asseylum, princess of the Vers Empire situated on Mars. Because he was born on Earth, he is regularly mistreated by other Martians, but Asseylum’s relative kindness to him earns her his eternal loyalty.

When it appears that Asseylum was assassinated by Terran terrorists, Slaine’s life begins a rapid slide downhill. He discovers that not only is the princess alive, but the attack was the result of a conspiracy within the Vers Empire. His ensuing attempts to find and protect Asseylum draw him deeper into the war between Vers and Earth, and in his fervor, the decisions he makes only push him back further from his goal.

9 Subaru Mikazuki (My Roommate Is A Cat)

Though he is a successful author with several popular novels to his name, Subaru isn’t exactly living life to the fullest. His social awkwardness and debilitating anxiety prevent him from forming close relationships or venturing too far out of his house, and after the deaths of his parents, he becomes more of a shut-in than ever.

His life changes when he adopts a stray kitten who he comes to name Haru. In learning how to properly care for her, Subaru is forced to venture outside his comfort zone. He braves many new experiences and relationships, and by the end of one of the best anime of the Winter 2019 season, his world is not only wider and richer but he and Haru have become best friends.

8 Giorno Giovanna (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)

The protagonist of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’s fifth part, Golden Wind, Giorno stands out considerably from the series’ other heroes. Fathered by Dio Brando using Jonathan Joestar’s body, he inherited the legacy of both bloodlines. But rather than being showy and hot-blooded, he is quiet, polite, and reserved.

His dream is altruistic: to reach the top of the Italian mafia in order to end its practices of drug dealing and child abuse, but he is willing to be completely ruthless to make it come true. Ono’s performance perfectly conveys both his kindness and the deep-rooted anger towards injustice that fuels it.

7 Mikaela Hyakuya (Seraph Of The End)

Seraph of the End centers around childhood friends, Mikaela and Yuichiro. As boys, they and the other children of the Hyakuya orphanage attempted to escape their vampire captors but were caught. The rest of the orphans were killed, Mika was mortally wounded, and Yuu fled, thinking himself the only survivor.

Mika, however, survived by being transformed into a vampire against his will. Formerly a cheerful and friendly child, life as a creature he hates under the care of abusive guardians has turned him cold and cynical. He may fight on the vampires’ side, but he survives only to find and reunite with Yuu.

6 Tanaka (Tanaka-Kun Is Always Listless)

True to the show’s title, high school student Tanaka is almost impressively listless. He has no ambitions other than to do as little as possible and is famous among his peers for being able to fall asleep anywhere. He relies on his best friend, Ohta, to help him do the everyday tasks he just can’t be bothered with.

Born to be a background character but forced to be the main character, Tanaka’s quest to do the absolute bare minimum is thwarted by his desire to help his loved ones. He is more considerate of his friends than one might think, such as in the episode “Ohta-kun’s Ordeal,” in which he declares Ohta Appreciation Day and gifts Ohta a coupon book he can cash in for favors in return for all he does for Tanaka.

5 Phichit Chulanont (Yuri!!! On Ice)

One great strength of Yuri!!! on Ice is that all the other figure skaters are unique and likable characters. Despite the fact that they are Yuri’s competition, the audience still roots for them and hopes to see them achieve their dreams, as well. Phichit Chulanont is no exception.

Phichit is Yuri’s friend and former rinkmate. Warm-hearted and outgoing, he is driven to improve as a skater not only for his own sake but to represent his home country of Thailand on the world stage. He is ecstatic to become the first Thai skater to compete in the Grand Prix Final and takes great joy in being able to skate in one of Yuri!!! on Ice’s best figure skating routines to his favorite music.

4 Taro Komori (Ghost Hound)

Taro, the protagonist of the psychological thriller Ghost Hound, is one of the more obscure of Ono’s characters. As children, Taro and his older sister, Mizuka, were kidnapped for ransom, and Mizuka died before they were rescued. Eleven years later, Taro suffers from narcolepsy, memory loss, and nightmares of his sister’s last moments.

Another, more unusual side effect of this trauma is astral projection. Taro has regular out-of-body experiences in the Unseen World, in which he hopes to find Mizuka’s spirit. Along with Makoto and Masayuki, two other boys whose past traumas gave them similar abilities, Taro uncovers the secrets of his past kidnapping and several other mysteries surrounding their town.

3 Tetsuya Kuroko (Kuroko’s Basketball)

Tetsuya may not look like much, but that is his greatest strength. The phantom sixth member of the Generation of Miracles, a group of five abnormally talented basketball players, Kuroko’s utter lack of presence on the court makes him the perfect support. He can misdirect opposing players and pass the ball to wherever it’s needed most.

When the Generation of Miracles part ways, Tetsuya goes to Seirin High School, and his tactics help the newly formed basketball team become a force to be reckoned with. He may be short and soft-spoken, but he is determined to help his new teammates to victory against all of the former Generation of Miracles, becoming one of the strongest players in Kuroko’s Basketball.

2 Ryuunosuke Akutagawa (Bungou Stray Dogs)

Ono may be harder to recognize in this role in one of the Studio Bones’ best anime, according to IMDb. Rather than his usual soft delivery, he uses a harsh growl for Akutagawa, a vicious enforcer of the Port Mafia. His ability, Rashomon, turns the long black coat he wears into anything he wants: impenetrable armor, supports that lift him above his opponents, or a monstrous weapon that tears them all apart.

Akutagawa is obsessed with becoming stronger, believing that those who have fought for their power like him are destined to crush the weak. He was trained by Osamu Dazai, while the latter was a member of the Port Mafia, and his greatest desire is to earn Dazai’s approval, to the point where he wants to kill protagonist Atsushi Nakajima for becoming Dazai’s new subordinate.

1 Hakuryuu Ren (Magi: Labyrinth Of Magic)

Hakuryuu is the fourth prince of the Kou Empire, the powerful kingdom moving to conquer the world of Magi: Labyrinth of Magic. However, Hakuryuu isn’t as interested as the rest of his family in military conquest: he’s dedicated his life to revenge instead. His calm and respectful demeanor hides fierce rage and frustration at his own weakness.

When he was a child, his father and older brothers were murdered, and he nearly suffered the same fate. His eldest brother, Hakuyuu, died saving his life and telling him the name of their killer: their own mother, Gyokuen Ren. Powerless to bring her to justice, Hakuryuu grows up lying in wait, fighting to become strong enough to avenge his family when his chance to strike finally comes.
