10 Polly Of The Circus (1932) – 6.3

Who doesn’t love a movie about a circus? A circus arrives in a tiny New England town in the 1932 romantic drama, Polly of the Circus. When gorgeous trapeze artist Polly Fisher (Marion Davies) finds out that the billboards for her show have been painted over, she accuses local minister John Hartley (Gable) of the censorship.

9 After Office Hours (1935) – 6.4

In the 1935 crime-drama After Office Hours, Gable plays Jim Branch, a newspaper editor. He’s a hard-hitting editor who is serious about his job, but then he falls for the wealthy socialite Sharon Norwood (Constance Bennett). 7 Call Of The Wild (1935) – 6.8

Jack London’s 1903 novel Call of the Wild has had many film adaptations, but the 1935 version starring Gable and Loretta Young was the first full-length, “talking” feature adaptation. The story follows Jack Thornton (Gable) as he travels across Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush.

On his journey, he meets another Yukon-bound man, who abuses his sled dogs. Jack purchases a dog named Buck and the two travel together to find gold. Along the way, he meets Claire Blake (Young), who was abandoned by her husband in the Alaskan wilderness. The two start a romance and this causes Jack to reconsider his journey.

In one of his final film roles, Gable took another turn as a newspaper editor, Jim Gannon, in the 1958 romantic comedy, Teacher’s Pet. He doesn’t have any respect for college journalism programs, but he’s required to register for a night class.

He immediately clashes with the instructor, Erica Stone (Doris Day). However, he can’t deny his attraction to her. So, he decides to join the class under a false identity and the two begin a relationship. In the 1934 crime film Manhattan Melodrama, two orphaned boys, Jim Wade (William Powell) and Blackie Gallagher (Gable), live with a guardian until he dies. They must go their separate ways and they grow up to be two very different people. Jim has a prominent political career while Blackie is a casino owner and killer.

This wasn’t a typical film role for Gable, but he proved he could perform any type of role.

3 Mutiny On The Bounty (1935) – 7.7

In the 1935 historical drama Mutiny on the Bounty, the cruel captain of the HMS Bounty, William Bligh (Charles Laughton), is having a hard time maintaining order of the ship bound for Tahiti. He’s not the nicest captain and everyone is tired of the abuse. Fletcher Christian (Gable) leads a mutiny, resulting in Bligh’s removal from the ship.

As a result, Christian takes over as the captain of the ship. Bligh is determined to seek revenge. Critics favored Gable’s performance as the underdog sailor who fought for peace on the HMS Bounty.

2 Gone With The Wind (1939) – 8.1

When fans think of Clark Gable, they immediately associate him as Rhett Butler in the 1939 romantic drama, Gone with the Wind. He has made movie fans swoon for over 80 years. The epic Civil War drama focuses on southern belle Scarlett O’Hara (Vivien Leigh), and her love affairs with Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard) and Rhett Butler.
