No superhero is complete without a costume, and the great costume designers of the DC Extended Universe deserve tremendous praise for their work thus far in bringing these iconic heroes and villains to life on the big screen. Since 2013, they have redefined costume design for superhero films with their innovative work.
Whole new technologies were invented to create the costumes of this universe, designing unique fabrics and innovative methods these brilliant designers use to create costumes that, somehow, can conceivably look like a real thing in the real world. Surely, they are the unsung heroes of these superheroes.
Michael Wilkinson
Wilkinson first collaborated with director Zack Snyder on 300 (2007), and they would continue to partner up for Watchmen (2009) and Sucker Punch (2011). Their DCEU work began with Superman’s iconic red and blue suit in Man of Steel (2013), rebooting him with a commitment to authentic spandex, an inspirational feature of Zack Snyder’s films.
Wilkinson then worked on Batman’s Dark Knight Returns-inspired Batsuit, anti-Superman bear suit, and ancient Wonder Woman armor for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), then Flash and Aquaman in Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021), making him the most accomplished DCEU costume designer.
Kate Hawley
The first spinoff film of the DCEU required some hefty costume design work for its expansive cast of colorful supervillains. Coming off the success of Pacific Rim (2013) and Crimson Peak (2015), Kate Hawley was up to the challenge, overseeing the creation of some stand-out DCEU supervillain costumes that will not be forgotten any time soon.
The highlight of the costume work in Suicide Squad (2016) is clearly Joker’s array of fancy suits, trimmed with gold or shimmering purple to put a new gangster spin on the iconic Batman nemesis. Hawley is now working on Amazon’s series adaptation of Tolkien’s epic masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings.
Lindy Hemming
Before heading costume design for Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman (2017) and Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), Lindy Hemming worked wonders earning the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for Mike Leigh’s Topsy-Turvy (1999), and then brought to life the costumes of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy.
Her work elevated the concept of an armored Batsuit that gave those movies a unique appeal with its more grounded aesthetic. Carrying a torch passed from Wilkinson, she went on to define the unique aesthetic of Amazonian attire on the paradise island of Themyscira with its Greek-styled leather, bronze, and gold look.
Kym Barrett
When time came for James Wan to put his spin on the king of Atlantis with the standalone Aquaman (2018), costume designer Kym Barrett brought this surreal underwater world to life with a remarkable costume design aesthetic, foregoing the ancient and retro Atlantean style of Michael Wilkinson’s take for something more modern and high-tech.
Barret imbued the costume design with more of a swimwear aesthetic, focusing on tighter uniforms or pressurized armor filled with water. To say nothing of the stunning comic-accurate glory of her definitive take on Aquaman’s iconic orange and green suit. Her amazing behind-the-scenes work for the movie can be seen on her website.
Leah Butler
First working with YouTuber-turned-director David Sandberg in his feature film Annabelle: Creation (2017), Leah Butler was the costume designer for the fun world of Shazam! (2018) in which she put together some vibrant uniforms combining bits and pieces of the character’s long history into the definitive costumes for Billy Batson and his adopted family.
In a similar same vein as Wilkinson and Barret, Butler went with classic tights for the superheroes, and endowed them with a distinctly campy quality. The movie’s behind-the-scenes featurette on the costume design is an especially enjoyable watch.
Erin Benach
The founder of jewellery company Billie Valentine, Erin Benach was only the most logical choice to realise the zany and personality-driven wardrobe of Harley Quinn’s first lead outing on the big screen in this wild and colorful adventure in the DCEU’s underworld, armed with all the leather and glitter in the world.
In addition, she also faced the challenge of creating the outfits for Margot Robbie’s co-stars, including the villainous Black Mask portrayed by Ewan McGregor in stylish splendor. These costumes rival even the fancy threads of the Suicide Squad, whose outfits were a highlight of that film. Her Instagram is shock full of the kind of shimmering work she does on a regular basis.
Judianna Makovsky
Armed with hefty A-list experience in the Marvel Cinematic Universe from Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) through to Avengers: Endgame (2019) and having worked with great directors like Francis Ford Coppola and Ridley Scott since 1987, Judianna Makovsky dove into James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad (2021) ready to blow DC fans away.
Unfortunately, she has not interacted with press much over this film, leaving costume enthusiasts starved for her insight into the complexities of creating the outfits of the colorful titular Suicide Squad. Hopefully the movie’s physical release will shed more light on how these outfits were brought to life.
Alexandra Byrne
Costume designer Richard Sale is going old school in Andy Muschietti’s The Flash (2022), giving the titular scarlet speedster a suit made of rubber similar to his co-star Michael Keaton, who is returning to play the caped crusader after a thirty-year hiatus.
In addition, Byrne is also the tailor of Supergirl’s first introduction to the DCEU, staying true to Wilkinson’s Superman conception while taking some unique liberties making it stand out as its own separate universe. With six Oscar nominations, she has also done considerable work in the MCU, creating costumes for Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Doctor Strange (2016), and many more.
Richard Sale
Though most of his career has been spent as an assistant costume designer, Richard Sale’s experience as the lead costume designer remains very minimal. Now, IMDB has him slated as the designer for James Wan’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2022), and his work already looks to be promising.
On his Instagram, Wan posted some photos of Black Manta’s revamped retro-styled costume, as well as a first look at Aquaman’s new “stealth suit”. The movie is truly shaping up to be a love letter to the Silver Age and Jules Verne’s adventurous masterpieces.
Louise Mingenbach
Replacing Leah Butler, Louise Mingenbach takes the reins of costume design for David Sandberg’s superhero sequel. Having worked as the lead costume designer on the majority of X-Men films and many action movies, she is experienced with superheroes and her work is already looking promising. Sandberg posted a first look at the brand-new costumes for the Shazam family on his Twitter, showing a greater level of complexity and darkening the colors somewhat.
In line with the film’s title, Shazam: Fury of the Gods (2023), it does seem like this movie is primed to be more serious than the last, but promotional material still emphasizes a funny and family-friendly tone, of which Mingenbach has struck a perfect balance.
