10 Best Crazy Rich Asians Characters

One of the more well-received novel to movie adaptations in recent memory was 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians. It worked because it not only managed to remain faithful to the book but it also actually improved several aspects. For example, the protagonist Rachel comes across as wiser in the film because she figures out her boyfriend’s secret about his wealth sooner.

While that made Rachel a much better character to watch, she wasn’t alone in that department. Whether they were likable, detestable villains, or hilarious comedic relief, Crazy Rich Asians was filled with memorable characters who helped make it a successful film.

10 Shang Su Yi (Ah Ma)

10 Best Crazy Rich Asians Characters

In terms of importance to the story, Shang Su Yi (Lisa Lu) ranks higher than most. She is Nick Young’s grandmother, better known as Ah Ma, and impressing her means the world to Rachel Chu. At first glance, she does so and it makes Eleanor jealous since she never really got that.

Eventually, Ah Ma is pretty negative towards Rachel and Nick when she finds out the details about Rachel’s family. You can tell that she means alot and she’s pivotal to the plot but she doesn’t get nearly as much screen time as some of the other characters. Plus, her turn at the end was disappointing.

9 Araminta Lee

10 Best Crazy Rich Asians Characters

The entire film is set in motion because of the wedding between Colin Khoo and Araminta Lee (Sonoya Mizuno). As soon as Rachel and Nick arrive in Singapore, they’re greeting by the couple and audiences can immediately gravitate towards Araminta as someone they like.

She quickly shows that she is friendly towards Rachel and their conversation over dinner is one of the smoothest in the movie. Araminta remains a good friend and likable person throughout the story and everything about her wedding is already pretty iconic. Whenever she’s on screen, the movie is enjoyable.

8 Colin Khoo

10 Best Crazy Rich Asians Characters

Colin Khoo (Chris Pang) is a bit more important to things because of his past with Nick, who brings Rachel down for the wedding that he’s the best man of. While Araminta might be someone the audience can relate to and like more, Colin gets more time to be a more well-rounded character.

He’s also nice to Rachel when she shows up and remains a good friend throughout. His true shining moment comes when he and Nick leave the bachelor party and have a private conversation. He gives Nick the tough love that he needs to think about his future with Rachel and how his family will react. It’s an important moment for everyone involved.

7 Wye Mun

10 Best Crazy Rich Asians Characters

There are plenty of characters who bring humor to the movie but an argument could be made that Goh Wye Mun (Ken Jeong) is the funniest. The father of Rachel’s best friend Peik Lin, Wye Mun steals the few scenes that he’s in. The introduction he gives of his family makes for one of the better moments.

A highlight is his classic line about Peik Lin where he says that she came back from college as Asian Ellen. Unlike some other characters, Wye Mun didn’t get to do much else but sometimes you just need to make the viewer laugh, which he also does during the pre-wedding outfit montage.

6 Eleanor Young

10 Best Crazy Rich Asians Characters

The biggest villain of the story is Eleanor Young (Michelle Yeoh). Nick’s mother almost instantly disapproves of Rachel as a fitting suitor for her son and isn’t afraid to let her feelings known. The vicious conversation they have on the steps shows just how scathing Eleanor could really be.

It’s somewhat understandable since Eleanor herself was never really accepted by her mother-in-law. It doesn’t excuse her for repeating the behavior but you can see where the bitterness came from. She may not be a popular character but Eleanor is captivating to watch and her head-to-head battles with Rachel makes the latter tougher.

5 Nick Young

10 Best Crazy Rich Asians Characters

For the most part, Nick Young (Henry Golding) is a good character. He comes from money but knows that means people will treat him differently, so he woos Rachel without ever telling her about his wealth. It’s a big secret but it proves that he and Rachel love each other for them and nothing more.

While Nick is also supportive of Rachel, he does allow a few too many negative things to go on. For example, he knows that his mother is treating Rachel poorly but he doesn’t really stand up for her until it’s too late. Still, the fact that he eventually does is proof that he grows as a person over the course of the film.

4 Oliver T’sien

10 Best Crazy Rich Asians Characters

At the dinner party where Rachel meets most of the family, she struggles a bit but her savior is Oliver T’sien (Nico Santos). He might just be a second cousin and not exactly in the inner circle of the core family but Oliver knows how to make himself valuable, as he’s seemingly always around.

Oliver quickly becomes a friend to Rachel who bonds with her at the party and later helps her blow people away with her outfit at the big wedding. There’s also his adorable friendship with Peik Lin, which is hopefully expanded upon in a sequel. To top it all off, Oliver is pretty hilarious too.

3 Rachel Chu

10 Best Crazy Rich Asians Characters

The film’s protagonist goes through a lot during this tale. Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) does a good job of integrating herself into a world that is so out of her league. She fights through the other women being mean to her, Eleanor’s constant put-downs, and never quite feeling like she’s good enough.

Through it all, Rachel comes out on the other side stronger than ever and she remains likable from start to finish. The way that she stands up to Eleanor and wins their war is impressive. Unlike most rom-coms, Rachel was ready to leave her romance behind for her own life, making the proposal at the end mean even more.

2 Astrid Leong-Teo

10 Best Crazy Rich Asians Characters

When Nick is first telling Rachel about his family members, the mere mention of Astrid Leong-Teo (Gemma Chan) makes Rachel happy. That’s because everyone seems to love Astrid. Even her first scene sees her showcase how fabulous she is, while also displaying that she is kind at heart.

The audience feels sympathy for Astrid when she discovers that her husband is having an affair but she also handles it like a boss, telling him off at the end of the story. Astrid is a shoulder to lean on for both Nick and Rachel, proving that she might be the best overall person of anyone on the film.

1 Goh Peik Lin

While comedic relief is certainly a big part of Goh Peik Lin (Awkwafina) as a character, she is also important to the story and a great friend. That’s a combination that is worthy of being the true highlight of a fantastic movie. Right off the bat, Peik Lin is part of a hilarious scene but then she immediately goes into friend mode.

Peik Lin explains a lot about who the Young family is and she provides the right kind of outfit for Rachel. She also gives plenty of advice and assists Rachel at every turn, from the good moments to the bad. That kind of support and loyalty is unmatched in this story.
