Plenty of comedy films use more serious genres like horror or action to make their comedy dark, but what are the best dark comedies on Hulu?
You Are Reading :[thien_display_title]
Dark comedies are not for everyone. Getting them confused with classic comedies is an honest mistake, but this type of genre blends comedy with horror and thriller-themed storylines that aren’t for the faint of heart. Of course, this sub-genre is also a good time because comedic relief is usually there to lighten the load when the going gets rough.
Amazing dark comedies have been around for decades, and thankfully some of the best are available to stream on Hulu. So sit back, relax, and prep the queue to add some of the best dark comedies on Hulu right now.
10 Suburban Gothic: 5.6 (2014)
Kat Dennings and Matthew Gray Gubler star in Suburban Gothic, a comedy horror about a vengeful ghost that terrorizes a small town. When a man named Raymond (Gubler) returns to his hometown after failing in the big city, he moves in with his parents and realizes a supernatural force has been released.
Raymond can also interact with the paranormal and reunites with an old classmate named Becca (Dennings). Is his presence what awakened the spirit, or is it a bigger secret than one of the locals is hiding?
9 Assassination Nation: 6.0 (2018)
Sam Levinson, the writer of Euphoria and Malcolm & Marie, released the action-crime comedy Assassination Nation in 2018. The movie centers on a data hack that digs up the dark secrets of the locals in a town called Salem.
When four girls find themselves in the middle of it, they must fight to survive while dealing with the reproductions themselves. Assassination Nation is an action-packed thriller filled with comedic scenes and is considered one of the best LGBTQ+ thrillers out there.
8 Villains: 6.2 (2019)
Villains is a dark comedy-drama that centers on a young couple named Mickey (Bill Skargård) and Jules (Maika Monroe). They decide to travel across the country while breaking into suburban houses.
When they finally make it inside one of the homes, they’re caught by the owners after they stumble upon a little girl in the basement. Believing the homeowners keep her locked up, they soon realize they should’ve been picked a different house. While Villains is considered a horror movie first and foremost, it has the perfect amount of humor to keep things light.
7 It’s A Disaster: 6.4 (2013)
When four couples decide to meet for a casual Sunday brunch, they soon realize it’s anything but normal. A man in a hazmat suit knocks on the door to inform them that the world is ending, and the couples hunker down and decide to ride it out.
While the apocalypse is supposedly right outside, those in the house become unhinged and unravel at the seams when the going gets tough. It’s a Disaster is a low-budget gem that’s full of surprises and has a shocking end that no one will see coming.
6 The Art Of Self-Defense: 6.6 (2019)
When a young man named Casey (Jesse Eisenberg) gets attacked on the street, he decides to sign up for karate classes at the local studio. After getting the hang of it, Casey realizes he can protect himself and has a new sense of self-confidence.
But things take a turn when he realizes that the classes become more mysterious and sinister when the sun goes down. The Art of Self-Defense heavily relies on the “dark” in the dark comedy but still manages to throw in a laugh here and there.
5 Elvira: Mistress Of The Dark: 6.6 (1988)
Elvira (Cassandra Peterson) isn’t like the locals of Fallwell, Massachusetts, so when she arrives to collect the inheritance money her great-aunt Morgana left her, she stuns the locals. Believing the money will jumpstart her own show in Las Vegas, she’s hopeful, but her time in Fallwell proves to be much more difficult than she thought it would be.
Also inheriting a mansion, she settles down to find a job but is only left with a recipe book and a weird poodle. Does Elvira belong here, or should she pack up and leave the locals to it?
4 Heathers: 7.2 (1989)
Michael Lehmann’s comedy-crime movie Heathers proved to be one of the greatest dark comedies to come out of the 1980s. Winona Ryder stars as Veronica Sawyer, a popular girl that has grown tired of her friends (all named Heather) and the role of a snooty rich girl. She gets her shot running with a different crowd when she meets the new guy, Jason Dean (Christian Slater).
What starts as a harmless prank turns dark when Jason targets one of the Heathers. After killing Heather Chandler (Kim Walker), Veronica realizes how dangerous Jason can be. From this point on, Jason is set on ruining the lives of the rich and popular, and Veronica doesn’t know how to end the blood bath he’s created.
3 Deadpool 2: 7.7 (2018)
Deadpool 2 continues with the story of Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) after he loses the love of his life, Vanessa (Morena Baccarin). He decides to form a group called the X-Force, a team of fellow rogue mutants to protect a young boy named Russell Collins (Julian Dennison) from a cyborg named Cable (Josh Brolin).
Deadpool 2 is a fun ride that can stand side-by-side to Deadpool for its crude humor, action, and excellent casting.
2 Deadpool: 8.0 (2016)
Deadpool is an action-adventure comedy that centers on the origins of former Special Forces operation turned mercenary Wade Wilson. After going through a unique experiment, he’s left with powers and starts calling himself Deadpool.
With these newfound abilities, Deadpool is on a mission to seek revenge on the man who nearly cost him his life.
1 Parasite: 8.6 (2019)
The best dark comedy movie on Hulu is Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite. The movie centers on a down-on-their-luck family living in a cramped basement. To make up for their work ethic, they turn to minor scams to make a living.
One day, Ki-woo (Woo-sik Choi), the teenager of the house, scores a tutoring job for a wealthy family. This gives his family an idea to take over their home and play house.
