The family sitcom One Day At A Time is currently airing on Pop TV, after having been canceled by Netflix. The show is back, stronger than ever and continues to deal with the mundane, while also tackling serious issues faced by the Cuban-American family. The ensemble cast along with the show itself has been received very well by audiences and critics alike.
Upon its debut on Netflix, One Day At A Time was considered one of the best shows of 2017 with a 97% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Like some other newer sitcoms, it tries to deal with serious issues as well. The show continues to outdo itself in its new home Pop TV. Most of the episodes of the show are very well rated, but here is the best of the best.
10 “Hello, Penelope” (9.3)
This episode in Season 2 was a very emotional one and was mainly focussed on Justina Machado’s Penelope. The episode revolves around her dealing with mental health issues. It talks about anti-depressants, therapy, medical help, and more. It is able to capture the difficulty of living with mental health issues, especially when you’re a single mother of two teenagers. The episode ends on a positive note, with beautiful moments between Justina Machado’s Penelope and Todd Grinnell’s Schneider as well. This episode was very well received by critics and was able to touch the hearts of the audiences.
9 “Not Yet” (9.3)
The last episode of Season 2 is brilliant for many reasons. It is brilliant for its ability to intersperse humor into even dark and sad moments, for its ability to tear up the viewers with its beautifully written dialogue, for its ability to make the audiences feel like a part of the family thanks to the brilliant acting by the cast members. Rita Moreno’s Lydia suffers a medical emergency that brings all her loved ones to the hospital bed where they recount their realizations, regrets, appreciation, and love.
8 “Quinces” (9.3)
The final episode of Season 1 had left viewers in a puddle of tears. This cleverly written episode had too many great moments, without even including the funny bits like the reference to Hamilton. Isabella Gomez’s Elena comes out to her father but things don’t go as planned.
But the rest of her family is there for Elena, with Penelope stepping into the space of her father when he disappears. Lydia also makes an amazing outfit that makes Elena and the viewers cry. “I got you,” could be said to be the motif of the episode.
7 “Drinking And Driving” (9.2)
Todd Grinnell’s Schneider is one of the funniest characters on the show. But in this episode in Season 3, the audience is shown a different side to Schneider that is heart-wrenching to watch. The problems that addicts deal with are shown through the episode. The support that the Alvarez family provides helps Schneider get back on his feet. There is an especially poignant moment in the show when Marcel Ruiz’s Alex has to make an important decision. The episode is difficult because it doesn’t try to sanitize the problem of addiction and shows it with all the pain that comes with it.
6 “Boundaries” (9.2)
From the latest season of the show which airs on Pop TV, this is one of the most hilarious episodes of the season as well as the show. Justina Machado’s Penelope tries to talk to Marcel Ruiz’s Alex about sexuality. This conversation is triggered by Alex’s walking in on his mother, catching her at an “unfortunate” moment. What follows is the different approaches to sexuality that Lydia, Penelope, and Elena try to explain to Alex who is really embarrassed. It also puts Penelope in confusion regarding her varying stances of “boundaries” in their household.
5 “Ghosts” (9.1)
In the last episode of Season 3, Penelope finds herself alone at her ex-husband’s wedding. The episode has a surrealistic quality to it with Penelope talking to her dead father throughout the episode. It mainly focuses on her trying to understand why she isn’t able to find a partner for herself, as is expected of her.
The episode portrays very well the expectations society has with regard to marriage and society’s unwillingness to accept being single as a voluntary choice. Penelope slowly realizes the many things she has going for and finds happiness in herself.
4 “Anxiety” (8.9)
As the name suggests, this episode in Season 3 mainly deals with anxiety and anxiety attacks that Penelope deals with. The episode shows these scenes in black and white to highlight the difference. The anxiety attacks shown, closely resemble real life and the episode deals with this issue with the sensitivity it deserves. There are some difficult and heartwarming moments in this episode wherein Schneider helps out Penelope, and Alex helps out Elena during their anxiety attacks. The episode talks about this issue, the medical nature of it, and the need to get help with it, all with a touch of lightness.
3 “The First Time” (8.9)
This is another wonderful episode from Season 3. In this episode, Penelope finds out that Elena had booked a hotel room in secret. The themes of sex, consent, and more are dealt with maturely and sensitively in this episode. This episode also focuses on allowing Penelope to understand her daughter’s sexual orientation better, and this helps both mother and daughter in helping each other out. The episode also does a really good job of showing the respectful relationship between the teenager Elena and Syd, and the need for enthusiastic consent.
2 “The Funeral” (8.9)
The first episode of Season 3 is one of the more really fun episodes of the show. This episode also has a lot of guest appearances including those made by Gloria Estafan, as well as Melissa Fumero and Stephanie Beatriz of Brooklyn Nine-Nine fame.
This episode is a really fun ride, with all the cast members and the guest stars humorously interacting with each other in what shouldn’t ideally be a humourous situation, at a funeral. This episode has many laughs and sets a high standard for the rest of the season.
1 “Locked Down” (8.9)
There’s a lot happening in this Season 2 episode. This is one of those episodes that can be called a perfect example of what the show is. It has hilarious moments, physical comedy, clever writing, and also some sobering moments wherein serious matters are presented. With a criminal on the loose, everyone needs to stay inside the Alvarez home. The three main storylines that emerge revolve around Penelope and Max’s relationship, Elena and Syd’s awkward first date, and the debate surrounding keeping guns at home.
