Horror comedy is a fun genre popularized by such films as Shaun of the Dead, Happy Death Day, and Zombieland. Most horror-comedy movies are not suitable for families or young children due to the scares and horror elements inherent in the genre, but some films cut down on the gore and lean into the comedy to entertain their younger audiences.

As more and more films attempt to blend genres to create something unique – such as the action-comedies Deadpool and The Hitman’s Bodyguard – it is natural for writers to come up with innovative takes on horror-comedies, making them suitable for families while retaining the dark roots of the genre.

10 Goosebumps (2015) – Stream On FX

The Goosebumps TV show introduced many young fans to the horror series, with both good and bad episodes remaining in fans’ minds even years later. However, the movies released in 2015 and 2018 are much less creepy than the show. Both films follow a group of young people who accidentally let all the Goosebumps monsters into the real world and have to stop the destruction of their town.

While they include references to and appearances from some of the most iconic Goosebumps monsters, the TV show’s creepy tone is replaced in the movies by light-hearted action and family-friendly jokes, especially with the inclusion of Jack Black as R.L. Stine.

9 The Lost Boys (1987) – Stream On AMC+

This film is a little bloody, being a vampire movie, but families will undoubtedly be entertained by the script’s quick wit and enigmatic characters. Two brothers move to California and become entangled in the exploits of the local vampire biker gang, who turn the eldest brother, Michael, into one of their own.

1987’s The Lost Boys is fun without being too frightening, and the hilarious dialogue will engage a family audience, although perhaps this vampire flick should be reserved for the older kids who will enjoy the campy horror and relate to the younger characters.

8 Gremlins (1984) – Stream On HBO Max

This comedy masterpiece has so many hilarious quotes and has left a lasting impression on pop culture as a whole. A young boy is given a creature called a mogwai as a pet and is instructed to never let it get wet, never expose it to sunlight, and never feed it after midnight. If these rules are broken, the mogwai will spawn gremlins, lizard-like creatures that love destruction.

During initial screenings for the film in 1984, some families walked out of the theatres as they had been expecting a cute, cuddly animal movie due to the mogwai’s inclusion in the marketing. However, this horror film is suitable for families as long as they do not go in expecting a sweet little Disney movie. In contrast to other animal protagonists, the gremlins are violent, mischievous, and wickedly funny.

7 Little Shop Of Horrors (1986) – Stream On HBO Max

Little Shop of Horrors follows Seymour, a shy florist, who finds a weird plant and cares for it, unknowingly raising a deadly alien from outer space. The plant, Audrey II, drinks blood and grows bigger, eventually forcing Seymour to feed him human flesh.

Little Shop is a fun musical, especially with the inclusion of the sadistic dentist played by Steve Martin, who is relishing the villainous role. Like many other musical films, songs were cut from the original script to make the ending much more family-friendly, changing an apocalyptic climax where the plants take over to a happy yet still ambiguous finale where Seymour settles down with his true love, Audrey.

6 Addams Family Values (1993) – Stream On Paramount+

The Addams Family is a great franchise for its depiction of a fun and functional family that doesn’t adhere to the usual stereotypes about families in TV and film. The franchise has had several adaptations, most recently two animated films starring Oscar Isaac and Charlize Theron. However, one of the best entries in the franchise is Addams Family Values, in which Wednesday and Pugsley go to summer camp, and Uncle Fester becomes ensnared by a seductive serial killer.

Despite the mild horror content, Addams Family Values is such a brilliantly funny film that any audience will enjoy it, with its creative dialogue and over-the-top, weirdly lovable characters.

5 Ghostbusters (1984) – Stream On AMC+

Ghostbusters is a classic movie for the family to watch at Halloween, balancing horror and comedy expertly with its passionate characters, brilliant story, and way too catchy theme song. A group of parapsychologists forms a business to catch ghosts in New York City, accompanied by a team of comedic characters such as deadpan secretary Janine.

Many things in this ’80s movie still hold up today, and new viewers of the film will enjoy seeing where the multiple references and memes originated, such as the Stay Puft marshmallow man and the iconic Ghostbuster costumes used in many other franchises.

4 Hotel Transylvania (2012) – Stream On Starz

The Hotel Transylvania movie franchise follows Mavis, the daughter of Dracula, as she falls in love with a human named Johnny. Although initially, Dracula is against the romance, he warms up to Johnny and approves their love, often going on adventures alongside them.

The adorable and colorful animation in these films is fun viewing for the whole family, and the horror aspect comes from the inclusion of different horror movie monsters, including Frankenstein’s monster, werewolves, and slimes. The story in the first film is genuinely heartfelt among the zany antics the characters get up to, so this franchise is worth checking out for adults and kids alike.

3 Beetlejuice (1988) – Rent On Apple TV

Beetlejuice has a star-studded cast including Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Winona Ryder, and Michael Keaton as the titular character. Beetlejuice is a poltergeist that is hired by a recently deceased couple, the Maitlands, to scare a living family that has bought their house. However, Beetlejuice turns out to be more trouble than he is worth, and the Maitlands must band together with the family to get rid of him.

The film is filled with creativity and humor, especially slapstick and bizarre comedy that younger audiences can enjoy. Beetlejuice was adapted into a fun yet still dark and horror-filled musical in 2018, starring School of Rock performer Alex Brightman as the lead role.

2 What We Do In The Shadows (2014) – Stream On Hoopla

2014’s What We Do In The Shadows is a mockumentary written and directed by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement. The film follows four roommates, all of whom were transformed into vampires during various time periods, and their escapades as they encounter lost loves, modern technology, werewolves, and vampire hunters.

WWDITS is a hilarious comedy that has enough humor to balance out the horror and make it fun watching for a family audience. The film was recently made into a successful TV show starring Kayvan Novak and Matt Berry of The IT Crowd fame.

1 The Witches (1990) – Stream On HBO Max

Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s book The Witches follows a young boy who discovers a coven of witches intent on transforming children into mice to easily exterminate them. The book was adapted into a film in 1990, featuring Anjelica Huston as the Grand High Witch and practical effects for the witches and the mice transformations, creating terrifying creatures and sequences.

Anne Hathway played the Grand High Witch in the most recent 2020 adaptation, to mixed results. Huston’s portrayal of the character is over-the-top and campy, leaning into the comedy of the role rather than Hathaway’s intentionally creepy performance.
