10 Best Horror Games Released In 2021

From sketchbook-styled games like Mundaun to PS1-styled games like Bloodwash, 2021 had plenty of horror games that created unique experiences.

Compared to other video game genres, horror games tend to be some of the most interesting, varied, and subversive experiences a player can find. Similarly to horror novels, movies, and TV shows, horror games typically need to break norms, tropes, and formulas to terrify players, which means developers need to work extra hard to create unique games.

Yet with so many horror games being released every year from both big companies and indie developers, it can be hard to know which games succeed as horror titles. Luckily, there were certain games this year that stood out.

Mundaun

Created by Swiss developer Hidden Fields, Mundaun is a first-person horror game about a man named Curdin whose grandfather has recently passed away supposedly because of an accidental barn fire. When he arrives in Mundaun, his grandfather’s town, for the funeral, however, he quickly discovers that there is more to his grandfather’s death, and he must travel through the Alps to discover the truth.

In this supernatural mystery adventure, players must solve puzzles and choose to either kill monsters or avoid them. There are also story choices towards the end of the game that determine which ending the player gets. Although the gameplay is similar to other modern horror titles, this game sets itself apart by having a sketchbook art-style that gives the game a certain eerie quality.

Bubbaruka!

Inspired by virtual pets like Tamagotchi and video game urban legends, Bubbaruka! is a horror game where the player takes care of virtual pets called Bubbarukas by feeding, petting, and playing with them. Within the in-game universe, John, the player’s friend, found a copy of this originally lost game that was never officially released, and emails the game to the player.

But there is a reason this game was never actually released. As the player takes care of three different Bubbarukas named Tomo, Miboo, and Flou, they will slowly uncover the dark secrets of the game through both 2D exploration and first-person segments.

Tormented Souls

The Resident Evil series is one of the only old influential survival horror franchises to still thrive in the modern day, but this is mostly because the series has had several major changes to keep it relevant. But for the fans who prefer the original aesthetics and mechanics, some developers make games like Tormented Souls that deliberately mimic the PlayStation 1 games. Tormented Souls follows a woman named Caroline Walker who visits an abandoned mansion to solve the disappearance of two twins.

As Caroline explores the mansion, the player has to fight mutated monsters, solve puzzles, and travel between universes using mirrors. Depending on the player’s choices, they will get different endings. With fixed camera angles and deliberately awkward voice acting, the game feels like a blast from the past.

Little Nightmares II

Although it has “II” in the title, the 2.5D puzzle-platformer Little Nightmares II is a prequel to the original 2017 game. The game follows a boy with a paper bag on his head named Mono as he and the protagonist of the previous game, Six, work together to navigate the Pale City and reveal the truth behind some of the events in the first game.

Similarly to the first game, Little Nightmares II is filled with a spectacular art style that creates a creepy atmosphere that keeps players invested from start to finish. Despite being a prequel, the story introduces plenty of new elements that make it a new experience.

Their Eyes

There are plenty of great horror games available on Itch.io, but one of the best games to release on the site this year is Their Eyes, which is a retro-styled pixel art game. The player character wakes up in a strange place filled with Lovecraftian creatures and dark secrets, and they must find a way out before the day ends and they are trapped there forever.

Like the old MS-DOS games this is based off of, the gameplay can be fairly brutal at points, which means the player will likely die many times. The incredible amount of details, lore, secrets, and endings in this short experience make the struggle worth it.

Nightslink

Nightslink is a surreal and foreboding PS1-style horror game that takes place in a silent world where people hide alone in their homes. The main protagonist is a delivery person called a “nightslink” who delivers cassette tapes to a specific apartment complex. As the player talks to the residents beyond the closed doors, it slowly becomes apparent that something is devouring this world.

During this experience, the player will become invested in the dying reality and the people within it. It’s a short game, but it leaves the player with questions and emotions that are hard to forget.

Maple County

Based on The Mandela Catalogue analog horror web series by Alex Kister on YouTube, Maple County is a horror game in which the player is watching an interactive training VHS tape for the Maple County Police Department. The tape is meant to teach recruits about mysterious creatures known as alternates who kill people and take their appearance.

Similarly to the web series that inspired it, this seemingly normal informational tape slowly gets corrupted and changes to found footage of an encounter with one of the alternates. Though the game is short, it’s an incredibly accurate homage to the series and is genuinely scary regardless of whether the player knows the original material.

Inscryption

Created by the same developer who also made the game Pony Island, Inscryption is a deck-building roguelike game in which the main character is trapped in a mysterious cabin and forced by a shadowy demonic entity to play a card game. Over the course of the game, the player discovers various cards that can talk, and these cards help the player solve puzzles and escape.

Similarly to other recent roguelikes, this game uses multiple playthroughs to tell an overarching story. If a player prefers to simply play the card game endlessly, they can play the game’s recent free DLC that is just the card game.

Resident Evil Village

Released as a direct sequel to Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, the first-person survival horror game Resident Evil Village feels like an incredible mixture of all the best parts of the franchise so far. Like the previous game, the player once again controls Ethan Winters as he explores a snowy village in order to rescue his kidnapped daughter from the reoccurring series protagonist Chris Redfield.

As the player fights various mutant creatures, they will meet a whole cast of characters that each feel unique and interesting, which adds to the intriguing plot that manages to connect with all the previous mainline entries. Overall, the game manages to combine the horror elements of the older games with the action elements of later games while also keeping its own identity.

Bloodwash

Published by well-known indie horror developer Puppet Combo under the Torture Star Video sub-brand, Bloodwash is a PS1-styled horror game in which the player controls a pregnant college woman named Sara who is forced to visit a 24/7 laundromat at the edge of town late at night because her drunk boyfriend forgot to do the laundry. Unluckily for Sara, there is a serial killer known for attacking pregnant women at that laundromat.

In this game, the player will need to talk to certain NPCs and gather items to uncover the mysteries surrounding the laundromat and survive the night. With a slow buildup and hectic ending, this game will keep players on their toes from start to finish.
