Thanks to video games like Among Us, we now get to live out those Machiavellian tactics on-demand without many negative consequences. Suffice to say, Among Us is all the rage right now though it can get rather stressful.
That’s why experiencing it without the chaos might be a nice breather for when you get repeatedly voted out or killed. Hence, it would be nice to see others get accused or killed for a change. Thankfully, other movies offer that opportunity, namely the “whodunit” murder mystery films. Except this time, they come with a flavor-of-the-month– horror, because it’s the Halloween season.
10 SCREAM (1996)
Being a meta-commentary and oftentimes parody of slasher movies, Scream has established its own footing in a genre oversaturated with shock value tropes. A masked killer wielding a knife isn’t exactly anything new but with Scream and its sequels, it became a satirical deconstruction of the horror sub-genre.
Of course, it would be here if it didn’t exhibit any “whodunit” formulas. Scream’s antagonist often comes in the form of one of the characters of the movie and usually only gets revealed near the end. That sort of shocking revelation that the killer was walking among the good guys all along ought to be a familiar sight for Among Us players.
9 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE (2016)
10 Cloverfield Lane is one of the most unconventional “whodunit” movies around as it doesn’t exactly have a killer and there’s only one suspicious person in the cast. The story follows what happens to a woman who woke up in an underground bunker after a car crash.
The owner and proprietor of the bunker reasoned out to her that they’re stuck down there because of an alien invasion on the surface. For most of the film, the woman ends up doubting the bunker owner’s explanations and attempts to escape amidst the growing wariness and uncertainty of being bunked up with a stranger.
8 THE THING (1982)
The Thing is probably the closest title here that Among Us attempted to emulate. It’s pretty much based on the very same premise of one impostor among a stranded crew. The twist is that in The Thing, the “impostor” is a shapeshifting alien creature that can even copy the speech and memories of a person.
There’s also no voting out as the whole setting takes place in Antarctica in their research base. As such, the creature ends up taking the majority of the crew until the only one left is able to show why Kurt Russel was chosen as the lead actor for the film by being badass.
7 BASTARD (2015)
Bastard is a unique kind of “whodunit” horror as far as those go. It revolves around some unlikely characters such as a serial killer couple, a suicidal policeman, and a couple of hitch-hikers. All of them suddenly became suspects as well as victims in the advent of a “secret” and enigmatic murderer prowling around the mountain town where they gathered.
In such situations, it’s usually the two serial killers who distrust magnets, however, this one’s full of surprises, and the aim is to blindside the viewers with the identity of the masked murderer. Devil is practically Among Us if the gameplay map took place in a small elevator. Five strangers suddenly get trapped inside the said elevator. They eventually start finding out that one of them is the “devil” and is out to kill the other four whenever the lights go out of something weird happens in the elevator.
The story itself stemmed from one of M. Night Shyamalan’s works so viewers knows the movie means business and has lots of twists and turns.
5 I STILL KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER (1998)
For a movie about threatening someone over what they did, the I Know What You Did Last Summer got stretched quite heftily. Its sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer takes the whole slasher aspect of the movie and adds in a dash of mystery as the supposed “slasher” is still alive, apparently.
Even knowing this, the protagonist still went on a vacation to a secluded island with her friends. Of course, the killer’s identity doesn’t get revealed until near the end; the manner of the discovery was ridiculous, as expected of many slasher sequels.
4 IDENTITY (2003)
If being trapped in an enclosed space with nine other strangers where a serial killer might be among them is what made you like Among Us then Identity ought to fuel that craving for murder mysteries even more. It’s more of a thriller or suspense than outright horror but Identity’s clever use of circumstance and small group politics ought to keep the viewers interested.
The premise is the same but the setting is tweaked a little. Ten strangers seek refuge in a countryside hotel following a localized sandstorm; among them is, apparently, a serial killer who conveniently had a knack for killing hotel guests. It’s like a 2-hour long session of Among Us, except without the comedic assertions.
3 D-TOX (2002)
D-Tox features Sylvester Stallone in one of his lesser-known thriller movies. He’s not much of an action star here seeing as the film focuses more on plot.
Instead, it’s Stallone being vulnerable as FBI agent Jake Malloy who fell into depression after his wife got murder by a serial killer. Malloy had to be admitted into rehab into someplace where oxygen was likely replaced by snow due to how ubiquitous it is.
2 CHERRY FALLS (2000)
Cherry Falls expands the “whodunit” locale by making it a whole small countryside town where there’s only a handful of policemen including the Sheriff. As always, there’s a serial killer on the loose and they only seem to be targeting young males and females who are virgins.
The drama is intensified a bit more by the fact that the Sheriff has a daughter who he’s 100 percent sure is still a virgin and has yet to have sex with her new boyfriend. That’s the boyfriend is always a suspect in the father’s eyes, sounds about right.
1 SPHERE (1998)
Last but not least, a “whodunit” film with Samuel Jackson in it. This time around he’s a scientist in a film adaptation for one of Michael Crichton’s books. The film’s about a deep-sea research crew stationed in an underwater base where they encounter a sunken alien spacecraft with a weird giant sphere that affects the brain in strange ways.
Suspicions mount up as they accuse one another of dreaming up the threats and nearly killing all the crew members. It’s a unique take on Among Us’ formula that horror fans will surely appreciate.
