10 Best Marvel Comics Supervillains Not In The MCU

Major supervillains like Thanos have threatened the MCU, but some of the best Marvel Comics supervillains have yet to appear, including Doctor Doom.

The MCU has been full of outstanding villains, with the likes of Thanos and Ultron battling the Avengers with everything on the line. But some of the best supervillains from Marvel Comics remain out of action, thanks mostly to rights issues that have been in large measure resolved. Big bads like Doctor Doom and Galactus are still waiting in the wings to be introduced.
Some of the best supervillains in the comics aren’t in the MCU yet, meaning the franchise actually has its best villains ahead of it. With scores of rogues from the Fantastic Four and X-Men to draw from, the MCU will have years and years of villains to tackle. A few of them are likely to end up as the ultimate villain in the MCU, much as Thanos did.
Kingpin
Kingpin is one of Spider-Man’s best villains from the comics and also a major foe of Daredevil. Tremendously strong and even more ambitious, Kingpin’s usual role as the biggest player in the criminal underworld of New York City positions him as a likely antagonist to emerge in the MCU given his connection to several prominent heroes. In fact, he may already have appeared.
A mysterious figure known as ‘uncle’ to Maya Lopez in the new Hawkeye streaming series appeared in episode three. While fans didn’t see his face, there are a number of clues to suggest Kingpin is the big bad of Hawkeye, and Vincent D’Onofrio is returning.
Black Cat
Black Cat is one of the most prominent Spider-Man villains that hasn’t appeared in any live-action iteration of the franchise (Felicia Hardy did appear in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but not Black Cat). The master thief and sometimes enemy, sometimes ally of Spider-Man is a virtual lock to appear sooner rather than later, though.
As Peter Parker progresses in the MCU, it would make sense to introduce Felicia as a potential romantic rival to MJ. Comic book fans know Black Cat and Spider-Man’s relationship makes for a lot of drama. She could also bring him into closer conflict with the Kingpin. In the comics, Kingpin gave Black Cat her unique probability powers.
Mystique
Mystique is a fascinating character for the MCU to explore for a number of reasons. One is her obvious connection to the X-Men, but as the adoptive mother of Rogue, who in the comics acquired some of Carol Danvers’ power when she was Ms. Marvel, she could potentially play a role in the Captain Marvel franchise. In fact, Mystique first appeared in Ms. Marvel #18.
Mystique’s shapeshifting power also means she could already be active in the MCU, impersonating other characters without anyone knowing. This makes her a wild card who could be leveraged against numerous heroes, including the Avengers.
Sentinels
The Sentinels are among the most iconic and terrifying villains the X-Men have ever faced. They’re certain to appear in the MCU at some point, and will likely draw on established lore to update their origins. It wouldn’t be unexpected for the Sentinels to be sourced from some kind of Stark Industries tech or even a product of the upcoming Armor Wars series.
The towering Sentinels have yet to really get their full due in live-action, with their only real appearance coming in X-Men: Days Of Futures Past. The MCU will likely correct this in a big way when the X-Men finally arrive.
Annihilus
Annihilus is one of the most powerful Fantastic Four villains in the comics and is certain to be a major player in the MCU at some point. A resident of the Negative Zone, which has become the Quantum Realm in the movies, he’s destined to emerge from there at some point, and when he does he’ll be one of the biggest threats the MCU has ever seen.
The insectoid alien wields the Cosmic Control Rod, a weapon capable of generating massive and destructive cosmic energies. He led the Annihilation Wave, an invasion of the entire Marvel Universe, in the early 2000s crossover of the same name.
Mephisto
A lot of fans were disappointed when Mephisto didn’t emerge as the big bad of WandaVision, but he’s inevitable in the larger Marvel film and TV world. As the franchise explores magic more through Doctor Strange, The Scarlet Witch, and Agatha Harkness, it’s certain that the devilish character will play some role in the affairs of the MCU.
Mephisto is one of the most powerful beings in the comics, capable of altering reality. He often does so through cruel bargains, like when he erased all memory of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson’s marriage in the comics in exchange for Aunt May’s life.
Apocalypse
Apocalypse has appeared in live-action in X-Men: Apocalypse, but it arguably wasn’t the best use of the powerful mutant villain. When Apocalypse eventually appears in the MCU, he will likely be more of a slow burn. His age allows the character to be present throughout history, and he would have been around for some of the Eternals’ adventures in ancient Egypt.
In fact, this is probably the route Apocalypse takes into the franchise. Though a natural-born mutant (often credited as the very first), he gained many of his powers and abilities after fusing his body with Celestial technology.
Magneto
Magneto is certain to be one of the first, if not the first, villain the X-Men face in the MCU. As their most prominent villain from the comics and other media, he will be a major part of the movies when he appears. With the ability to control magnetism on epic scales, he represents a major threat to not just the X-Men, but the entire world.
Magneto is often a sympathetic character, and in the comics, is currently allied with Professor X and the X-Men on Krakoa. He could be more of an ally in the MCU when he appears, but that probably won’t last very long.
Galactus
Galactus is one of the most powerful cosmic beings in Marvel Comics and will absolutely be one of the biggest villains figuratively and literally when he appears in the MCU. Able to destroy entire worlds and harness cosmic energy on an unimaginable scale, he’s virtually unstoppable. His first appearance in “The Galactus Trilogy” in Fantastic Four #48-50 remains one of the greatest Marvel stories ever.
Galactus appeared as an amorphous cloud in the Fox Fantastic Four movies, but the MCU will certainly present him mostly as he appears in the comics. He will also certainly be accompanied by his most iconic herald, the Silver Surfer.
Doctor Doom
Another major Fantastic Four villain, and arguably the greatest Marvel supervillain ever, is Doctor Doom. As the bitter rival or Mr. Fantastic, he’s certain to appear. He’s also likely to end up as a major threat far beyond the Fantastic Four’s capacity to deal with.
The ruler of Latveria holds tremendous political and practical power, to say nothing of the fact he’s a genius inventor and one of the most powerful magicians in the Marvel Universe. When Doom arrives, he could be the biggest threat since Thanos.
