10 Best Minigames In The Danganronpa Series

With the release of Danganronpa S: Ultimate Summer Camp and the ultimate collection Danganronpa Decadence now available on the Nintendo Switch, there’s plenty of new content to enjoy for fans of the series. While Danganronpa S might not fulfill fans’ satisfaction for a new mystery game in the style of the previous games, it provides the light minigame experiences the series has always been good at, as well as fun interactions between the characters.

Whether in trials, as side game content, or even unlockable post-game modes, the series has had a ton of fun minigames to help break up the dark character-driven mysteries at the heart of the game.

Death Road Of Despair – Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony

10 Best Minigames In The Danganronpa Series

In typically odd fashion for the Danganronpa series, the third game chose to represent the students’ attempt to break out from the Ultimate Academy for Gifted Juveniles with a tough 2D platforming minigame. In the longest game in the series with the longest trials by far, this provided a welcome break from the usual gameplay.

While the game does have its issues, as it’s extremely difficult with seemingly randomly moving platforms and unavoidable falling bombs as well as clunky controls, it was nevertheless an interesting challenge. In addition, the game looks stylish and the 2D paper cut-out sprites of the characters look great.

Bullet Time Battle – Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc

10 Best Minigames In The Danganronpa Series

A game in which the player has to debate with one of the other students and shoot down their arguments by firing bullets to the beat, “Bullet Time Battle” was the original rhythm-based minigame that became a staple of the series. The game requires the player to tap the button in rhythm and destroy statements that appear on the screen while also having to actively reload the bullets.

The rhythm game has a simplicity that makes it good for beginners but adds to the stress with tempo increases and decreases, as well as having the visual prompt for the beats become invisible so the player has to rely completely on sound cues. The game ends with the player firing a bullet at the opponent’s final statement, bringing an enjoyable moment of catharsis towards the end of a trial.

Mass Panic Debate – Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony

This trial minigame developed on the gameplay of Nonstop Debate mode in which opposing arguments appear on screen to disrupt the player while they try to identify correct statements. In “Mass Panic Debate” the chaos and confusion are increased as the screen splits into three or four different sections, each with characters saying their piece simultaneously.

Naturally, this makes for a stressful minigame, as the player needs to focus on each section one at a time and filter out the distractions caused by the other characters talking. “Mass Panic Debate” is a nice step-up from the usual gameplay of Nonstop Debate mode and an interesting minigame in its own right.

Island Mode – Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair

10 Best Minigames In The Danganronpa Series

“Island Mode”, along with “School Mode” for the first Danganronpa game, was the minigame unlocked after completing Danganronpa 2, allowing the player to interact more with the characters that they may not have been able to in the midst of the murder and stress of the main story.

The mode is a dating sim with a loose plot, but it mainly revolves around sending characters on missions to collect materials and building tools and consumables. The gameplay is decently engaging for players interested in micro-managing games, but the main appeal is the character events that can be unlocked.

Salmon Fishing – Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony

10 Best Minigames In The Danganronpa Series

Whilst “Hangman’s Gambit” and its iterations in every trial since the very beginning have continued to annoy as much as amuse, “Salmon Fishing,” one of the casino games in Danganronpa V3, is the closest the games came to a genuinely fun version of the gameplay style. Some of the best minigames involve gambling elements and, in the Danganronpa V3 casino, “Salmon Fishing” was the most fun way to earn valuable Casino Coins.

Compared to trying to guess the intentions of the game and searching desperately for the right letter in “Hangman’s Gambit”, “Salmon Fishing” simplifies the gameplay to looking for the correctly colored fish. The minigame is straightforward and there’s always something satisfying about seeing Monokuma whacking salmon with his claws.

Psyche Taxi – Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony

10 Best Minigames In The Danganronpa Series

One of the most absurd minigames in the trials and also one of the most fun. “Psyche Taxi” completely changes things up from the other minigames, putting the player in a car and tasking them with hitting boxes as they go to make relevant statements appear. Once a full statement has appeared, the player is presented with a question and multiple possible answers, represented by women standing in the road.

By aiming for the correct one, the woman lands in the car and the game continues, usually settling some overarching issue about the case. Although it steps up the difficulty in later trials with moving boxes, the game remains relatively easy but still makes for a nice variation from the typical trial gameplay.

Argument Armament – Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony

10 Best Minigames In The Danganronpa Series

The third game in the series kept up the pattern of ending trials with a rhythm-based minigame, but “Argument Armament” was a big improvement compared to “Bullet Time Battle” and a welcome change. Similar to the previous version, the protagonist confronts another person in the trial who throws out arguments and ideas that the player needs to shoot down to the beat.

“Argument Armament” adds in some variation to the gameplay, requiring the player to press different buttons as they are prompted and to sometimes hold the button down or mash repeatedly. Similar to “Bullet Time Battle” though, the best part of the game is finishing off with a final statement and using it to shoot down the other party and end the discussion.

Pets – Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair

10 Best Minigames In The Danganronpa Series

A Tamagotchi-style minigame that ran throughout the second game in the series, “Pets” allowed the player to raise their own virtual pet from an egg all the way through to its final evolution. By playing the game and raising different pets through their full lifecycle, the player could win trophies as well as new skills to be used in trials.

By giving the pet gifts and cleaning up for it, the pet gains hope and has a higher chance of a positive outcome, but doing a poor job taking care of it can lead to the pet dying or becoming a Monokuma upon reaching adulthood. With six different final forms the pet can reach, there is some replayability and the minigame can be a fun distraction from the main story.

Love Across The Universe – Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony

10 Best Minigames In The Danganronpa Series

“Love Across the Universe” is the bonus game unlocked by completing the third main title in the series and is roughly similar to the postgame of the previous titles, allowing the player to get closer to the characters and go on dates with them in an alternative plot to the main game.

The best part of the Danganronpa V3 postgame is that, unlike its predecessors, there is no resource gathering component and the minigame is much more focused on the character interactions. The mission of the postgame is to reach maximum affection with each character by spending time with them, and failure to do so can even lead to a bad ending. “Love Across the Universe” demonstrates some of the best parts of dating sims.

Logic Dive – Danganronpa 2 – Goodbye Despair

Sometimes the simplest minigames are the best, and “Logic Dive” is a great example of this. While certain other minigames in the series could be frustrating and require a lot of trial and error or pausing to think, “Logic Dive” is a simple obstacle course that the player must navigate on a snowboard in order to come to revelations about the case.

The minigame is surprisingly smooth and can be difficult at times. The controls are intuitive and allow the player enough freedom that it doesn’t get boring despite coming back at least once per trial. Each section concludes by presenting the player a question and a path they must follow, but even a wrong choice gets quickly reset, so the game never gets too frustrating.
