Another punk film from director Alex Cox, who had a run of great movies in the 1980s, Sid and Nancy is a biopic about the life of Sid Vicious, the bassist for the famous punk band The Sex Pistols, and his turbulent relationship with his then-girlfriend, Nancy Spungen.
Their drug-fueled relationship became detrimental to both their lives and Sid’s music career, which eventually led to the break up of the Sex Pistols and the death of Sid and Nancy themselves. Understandably dark and melancholy, Sid and Nancy is a story of love and addiction in a world where hope is hard to find.

The only foreign-language film on this list, We Are The Best! is a Swedish drama that follows a group of young girls as they explore punk culture and music, as well as their personal lives and relationships with friends and family.

2 SLC Punk – 7.5
As thought-provoking as it is funny, this comedy-drama from James Merendino follows two punks, Stevo and Heroin Bob, as they traverse the conservative landscape of Salt Lake City, searching for meaning and fulfillment in their lives. Stevo has nice and wealthy parents who aren’t happy that their son has decided to be a punk instead of going to college. But Stevo lives how he wants with his best friend Bob, partying and going to punk shows, living free from the expectations that his parents thrust upon him.
The story winds a tale with numerous interesting and diverse characters, all of which belong to different sub-cultures of SLC. But throughout the film, Stevo starts to question the life he is living and he must come to terms with tragedy and his own life philosophy in the end.
1 This Is England – 7.7
A wonderful coming of age story set in 1980s England, This Is England reveals the life of young Shaun, who finds friends and meaning in a group of skinhead punks after he lost his father in the Falklands War. After befriending older skinheads, he begins to get wrapped up in their culture and way of life, dissenting from his parents and local norms, shaving his head and buying some Doc Martens.
But drama in the gang emerges and Shaun gets stuck right in the middle of it, causing him to question his views and relationships with his new friends.
