10 Best Quotes From Man Of Steel

Man of Steel may not have been a resounding hit with critics when it was released but it has since grown into a very highly-rated movie by fans and began a trilogy of movies starring Henry Cavill’s Superman that would–eventually–come to fruition over the course of the following 8 years.

Part of what’s allowed it to stand out in the sea of comic book movies that have been produced over the past several decades is its distinct handling of both iconic larger-than-life characters and some difficult, thought-provoking, ideas. We’ve picked 10 of the best quotes from Man of Steel that show why fans can’t get the movie out of their heads.

10 “All these changes that you’re going through, one day… one day you’re gonna think of them as a blessing…” (Jonathan Kent)

10 Best Quotes From Man Of Steel

“All these changes that you’re going through, one day… one day you’re gonna think of them as a blessing and when that day comes, you’re gonna have to make a choice. A choice of whether to stand proud in front of the human race or not.”

Both Kevin Costner and Diane Lane were great choices for the roles of Superman’s adoptive parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent. They both get a lot of opportunity for emotional moments as the superhero’s supportive guardians and, even though some of his advice became quite contentious, Pa Kent does a pretty great job with this life advice that can be applied to many people, even if they don’t have alien superpowers.

9 “The symbol of the house of El means hope. Embodied within that hope is the fundamental belief in the potential for every person to be a force for good.” (Jor-El)

10 Best Quotes From Man Of Steel

For those who aren’t yet aware, this refers to the S-shaped symbol that is traditionally shown on the front of Superman’s costume. It was retroactively turned into a Kryptonian symbol in the canon, which fittingly translates as “hope” in the English language.

Superman’s father, Jor-El, educates his son on this piece of Kryptonian culture as he shows him his Superman suit for the first time aboard the crashed scout ship that goes on to play a major role in several DCEU movies. Jor-El’s idealism regarding his son may be a little overly ambitious in parts, but it’s hard not to get swept up in the sentiment of it all.

8 “You will give the people of Earth an ideal to strive towards…” (Jor-El)

10 Best Quotes From Man Of Steel

“You will give the people of Earth an ideal to strive towards. They will race behind you. They will stumble. They will fall. But in time, they will join you in the sun, Kal. In time, you will help them accomplish wonders.”

Zack Snyder set out a clear path for his take on Superman that, while somewhat of a deviation from what audiences were used to seeing of the hero on screen, still adhered to the hopeful and inspirational origins of the character. This quote from Jor-El, heard as Kal-El gathers his strength to fly for the first time, sums up the potential for good in his son that he described to him earlier.

7 “You are not alone.” (General Zod)

10 Best Quotes From Man Of Steel

Leave it to General Zod to make what would ordinarily be a very comforting statement of fact seem like the scariest thing in the world. But that’s exactly what he does when he introduces humanity to not only himself but the entire idea of humanity no longer being alone in the universe.

After hovering his ship well into view of humanity, he hijacks every radio and TV signal to broadcast this simple message in every language across the entire world and deliver his chilling introduction to Earth, as well as an ultimatum to hand over Superman or face unknown consequences.

6 “It’s only stuff, Clark. it can always be replaced.” (Martha Kent)

10 Best Quotes From Man Of Steel

Martha Kent doesn’t appear in Man of Steel for relatively very long but the character makes a big impact and more than fulfills her role as Clark Kent’s chief source of wisdom and support.

As throwaway as this statement may seem, it actually expresses one of the central themes of the movie, with the failed Kryptonian civilization being shown as something overly ornate and obsessed with controlling their material world to the point where it destroys their entire planet. This sentiment, offered up as the pair go through the ruins of the Kent family home, expresses the movie’s core moral that people are what matters most.

5 “…I will rebuild Krypton atop his bones.” (General Zod)

10 Best Quotes From Man Of Steel

“Tell me. You have Jor-El’s memories, his conscience. Can you experience his pain? I will harvest the codex from your son’s corpse and I will rebuild Krypton atop his bones.”

General Zod gets a lot of very villainous lines throughout the movie but this one–delivered to what survives of the consciousness of his former contemporary–is perhaps his most cold-blooded. Zod has a very singular vision in the movie and, for all his faults, he could never be accused of being indirect about his intentions and determination.

4 “…every action I take, no matter how violent or how cruel, is for the greater good of my people. And now, I have no people.” (General Zod)

10 Best Quotes From Man Of Steel

“I exist only to protect Krypton. That is the sole purpose for which I was born and every action I take, no matter how violent or how cruel, is for the greater good of my people. And now, I have no people. My soul. That is what you have taken from me.”

Zod’s overall motivation is explained in more detail before his final battle with Superman. Having effectively lost at this point in the finale, with what remains of the only known Kryptonian embryos destroyed, Zod is left with no reason to live. Michael Shannon’s delivery of these lines, whilst still fittingly overdramatic in spots, plays them quite seriously. Zod is a broken man at this point, and his words let the audience know just how much he means it when he says that he wants to take everything from Superman in return. Not just his own people, but his last shreds of innocence too.

3 “The world’s too big, mom.” // “Then make it small.” (Clark Kent and Martha Kent)

10 Best Quotes From Man Of Steel

Delving into Clark Kent’s early childhood on Earth, Man of Steel shows how even Superman had a tough time adjusting to school and the world around him.

When his superhuman senses kick in during class, Clark is forced to flee to a nearby closet and appears ostracized by the people around him. Luckily, his mother arrives to offer some kind words to the scared kid. As he’s overwhelmed by his senses, which is something that anyone can struggle with in daily life, Martha Kent offers this simple solution to the world seeming too big. Use your imagination and make it small. Focus on what matters and head towards it. It’s good advice for anyone.

2 “A good death is its own reward.” (Faora-Ul and Colonel Hardy)

10 Best Quotes From Man Of Steel

Antje Traue delivers one of the most underrated performances of the movie with her take on Faora-Ul, Zod’s ruthless subcommander. Her glib delivery of some of the movie’s most evil lines is part of what makes her such an effective villain. Another part of it is the character’s side rivalry with Christopher Meloni’s also-underrated character, Colonel Hardy.

In a standout moment, Faora-Ul moves in for the kill on Hardy after cornering him and offers this observation, but she’s stopped by Superman before she can reach Hardy. Later, in the finale, Hardy is once again the last person standing against Faora as she tries to take down the aircraft delivering a payload to destroy her Kryptonian ship. Before Faora reaches him, Hardy repeats the line and sacrifices himself by crashing the aircraft into the ship, helping to save the world in the process and validating what Faora may have only said as mockery.

1 “I will find him!” (General Zod)

Michael Shannon steals the entire movie in many ways, even though his character is absent from a large middle section of the story. He’s not only arguably the most important character in it but also arguably the most entertaining to watch.

The intensity that Shannon brings to the role is worthy of the cinematic legacy left by Terence Stamp’s performance in Superman II, and, when impressing on Kal-El’s mother that he will escape his imprisonment and track down her son, he delivers an enjoyably over-the-top line reading of the threat that lives up to Stamp’s famous “Kneel before Zod” quote.
