10 Best Shows Like The Shrink Next Door

Apple TV+ has released a number of recent series in the past several months that run the gamut of genres, from comedy to science fiction and, with the release of The Shrink Next Door, the docudrama. The series, which is based on the podcast of the same name and stars Paul Rudd and Will Ferrell in its lead roles, focuses on a psychologist who crosses numerous medical boundaries in his engagement with one of his patients.

With its blend of fiction and fact, and in its exploration of the darker parts of the human psyche, it resembles many other series that have recently appeared on television and will likely appeal to fans of this show.

Dr. Death (2021) – Streaming On Peacock

The streaming service Peacock has released a significant number of powerful dramas, one of which is Dr. Death which, like The Shrink, is based on a podcast. What’s more, it is also based on a true story about a doctor who managed to botch several surgeries in gruesome fashion yet was still allowed to practice medicine.

The series is thus a scathing indictment of the shortcomings in the oversight of surgeons, the gaps in which allowed a man who was a clear and present danger to continue causing harm.

Dopesick (2021) – Streaming On Hulu

There’s no question that the opioid crisis is one of the great health crises of the present era, and Dopesick is a miniseries that blends together riveting psychological drama with a broader criticism of Pharma and its cynical manufacture of the drugs that would go on to cut a swathe through large parts of Appalachia.

It is based on a book of the same name, and it features some powerful performances from Michael Keaton, Rosario Dawson, and Michael Stuhlbarg.

Mare Of Easttown (2021) – Streaming On Hbo Max

Mare of Easttown earned the lead actress Kate Winslett a great deal of praise for her performance of the title character, a cop trying to deal with the suicide of her son and a spate of disappearances and murders in her town.

Even though it is not based on a true story, it nevertheless contains a level of rich psychological detail that will be sure to appeal to fans of The Shrink Next Door, and it demonstrates the sinister things that often go on beneath the surface in Rust Belt cities.

Hacks (2021) – Streaming On HBO Max

Even though Hacks is a comedy, it still manages to paint a moving portrait of its main character, the comedian Deborah Vance (played by Jean Smart, in one of her best recent roles).

Furthermore, underneath the series’ biting humor there is quite a lot of commentary about the role of women in the sometimes brutal world of standup comedy. Smart, like Ferrell and Rudd in The Shrink, demonstrates that she is capable of being both devastatingly funny and deeply human at the same time.

The Morning Show (2019 – ) – Streaming On Apple TV+

The Shrink Next Door isn’t Apple TV’s only series about the horrible things that people can do to one another in the pursuit of their supposed professional ambitions.

The Morning Show is about many things–about the rivalry between two female anchors, about the cynical nature of modern news culture, about the clash of personalities that is endemic to show business–but it is also about the relationships among people and about how the boundary between friend and enemy can sometimes be unsettlingly porous.

Physical (2021) – Streaming On Apple TV+

Many of the shows that Apple TV+ has been releasing in recent months have focused on human psychology, about what makes people act in the way that they do. And, as The Shrink Next Door makes clear, not all of the people that appear in these series are especially likable.

That also applies to Physical, which stars Rose Byrne as a 1980s housewife who, increasingly disillusioned and alienated with the various aspects of her life, finds unexpected liberation (and influence) in the world of aerobics. Her character is as compelling as she is unlikable.

Mr. Corman (2021) – Streaming On Apple TV+

Mr. Corman, like The Shrink Next Door, features characters that aren’t especially appealing, though it has to be said that Joseph Gordon-Levitt deserves credit for creating a series that tackles the thorny question of millennial malaise.

The title character, played by Gordon-Levitt, is a thirty-something who increasingly finds that his life isn’t what he wanted it to be and, as he encounters the various people in his orbit, he ultimately has to confront the reality that he might be the one to blame.

The White Lotus (2021) – Streaming On Hbo Max

The White Lotus is one of those tales that straddles the line between comedy and drama, sometimes very uncomfortably so. Focusing on a group of tourists who visit a Hawaiian resort, it is in its own way a criticism of the entitlement that many wealthy White people feel that they deserve as they move through the world (doing terrible things along the way).

Just as The Shrink aims to make its viewers uncomfortable with the way that its title character transgresses various boundaries, so this series also paints its subjects in a very unflattering and cringe-worthy light.

Scenes From A Marriage (2021) – Streaming On HBO Max

Scenes from a Marriage, a remake of the Swedish series of the same name, follows a married couple as their marriage collapses and they have to contend with the fallout.

Featuring Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain, it’s a powerful and haunting psychological drama that is sure to appeal to those who enjoy the way The Shrink Next Door drills deep into the inner workings of their characters. Both Isaac and Chastain allow the viewer to see their characters as fully fleshed-out people, with all of their flaws.

Nine Perfect Strangers (2021) – Streaming On Hulu

The Shrink Next Door isn’t the only contemporary show dealing with a mental health professional crossing many ethical lines in their pursuit of knowledge, for that is the central premise of Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers.

The series is full of memorable and very intelligent characters, but none are quite as compelling as Nicole Kidman’s Masha, a woman who runs a mental health retreat but whose motivations for doing so are more than a tad suspicious.
