10 Best SnakeLike Pokémon In The Anime Ranked

Pokémon come in all shapes and sizes, with most being inspired by or originating from real life creatures. There are several instances of Pokémon species that possess serpentine features, generally applicable to a creature with a long body and a lack of conventional limbs resulting in a slithering movement.

While serpentine creatures are often thought of as being snakes, there are also depictions of mythical beings such as dragons that are described as having long serpentine bodies, therefore effectively making them snake-like beings as well.

10 Seviper Became A Loyal Servant For Team Rocket After Replacing Arbok

10 Best SnakeLike Pokémon In The Anime Ranked

The Fang Snake Pokémon Seviper, is mainly known for its appearances as a part of Team Rocket, being a faithful companion to Jessie throughout their Hoenn and Sinnoh journeys. It was an almost like-for-like replacement for Arbok, but if anything, it brought even more intimidation and danger.

The Battle Pike’s Lucy, who was dubbed the Queen of the Serpentine, also utilized a Seviper, but unlike her Milotic it was unable to hold out against Ash and his Donphan.

9 Jessie’s Arbok Was A Dangerous-Looking Cobra But Was Defeated Often For Team Rocket

10 Best SnakeLike Pokémon In The Anime Ranked

Jessie and Team Rocket’s Ekans, which later evolved into Arbok, is considered one of the trio’s best and most useful Pokémon of all time. Arbok and Weezing were loyal to Team Rocket until their release during the Ruby & Sapphire series, which saw the Team Rocket trio doing the right thing for once in releasing their loyal friends so that they could protect other Pokémon.

As with most of Team Rocket’s Pokémon, Arbok was often used as a punching bag for Ash and friends, but as demonstrated with its strength and moves against Rico, the Pokémon poacher, it was more than capable of holding its own and showcasing its talents when properly motivated.

8 Dragonair Uses Its Snake-Like Body For Its Impressive Offense

10 Best SnakeLike Pokémon In The Anime Ranked

Although Dragonite is shown as one of the strongest Dragon-types in the anime, it’s pre-evolved form Dragonair is also given a strong showing, mainly under the ownership of Blackthorn City Gym Leader, Clair.

Clair’s Dragonair puts in a strong showing against Ash in his Gym Challenge, with it taking down Ash’s prized Pikachu before eventually falling to Charizard in an intense bout. In Pokémon Journeys, although Ash catches a Dragonite, he first meets it as a Dragonair, with it evolving into Dragonite in order to save Ash.

7 Milotic Is One Of The More Elegant Serpentine Species

10 Best SnakeLike Pokémon In The Anime Ranked

The Tender Pokémon Milotic has been shown to be exceptional in both Pokémon Contests and battles in its anime appearances. The two main examples of Milotic’s battling prowess and power are on display under the ownership of Gym Leader Juan and the Battle Pike’s Lucy, who just so happens to adore Serpentine Pokémon.

Juan’s Milotic was powerful enough to defeat Ash’s formidable Swellow before falling to Ash’s prized Pikachu, while Lucy’s Milotic defeated Ash’s Donphan before also falling to his Pikachu. Despite not officially being named or classed as a snake, it doesn’t clearly class itself as anything else, so its serpentine body makes it a snake-like Pokémon.

6 Ash’s Snivy And Trip’s Snivy-Turned-Serperior Picked Up Some Impressive Victories

10 Best SnakeLike Pokémon In The Anime Ranked

In Pokémon Black & White, not only does Ash have a Snivy that constantly defies the odds and picks up victories without needing to evolve, but his rival Trip starts off with a Snivy that manages to humiliate and defeat Ash’s prized Pikachu in its unevolved form.

Dubbed the Grass Snake Pokémon, Snivy is unable to properly utilize snake-like moves, unlike its fully-evolved form Serperior, but it can still make effective use of Grass-type offensive moves. While it is another case of Ash wasting potential and opportunity by not evolving his Pokémon, Snivy still gives a good account of itself in its anime appearances. Trip’s Snivy eventually fully-evolves into a Serperior and picks up a win over Ash’s Pignite, before it ultimately loses against Ash’s Pikachu at the Vertress Conference.

5 Zygarde Has Many Forms Including One With A Snake-Like Appearance

10 Best SnakeLike Pokémon In The Anime Ranked

Zygarde is a mysterious Legendary Pokémon that can literally take many different forms. Its 50% form is a long serpentine black and green body with cobra-like features.

Zygarde is represented in the anime by Squishy and Z2, with both using their 50% forms, and Squishy even showcasing 10% and 100% as well. It may not be consistently serpentine, but it is still a powerful Legendary Pokémon regardless. The fact that Ash was comfortable enough in leaving his Greninja with Zygarde implies how much trust and respect was shown all around.

4 Gyarados Is A Terrifying Combination Of Sea Serpent And Dragon

10 Best SnakeLike Pokémon In The Anime Ranked

While Gyarados may not particularly represent a traditional snake in terms of design, its serpentine body is similar to that of a sea serpent or sea dragon. It is similar to Milotic in the sense that they both evolve from weak fish, Magikarp and Feebas respectively.

In the anime, wild Gyarados are often shown to be more vicious and dangerous than those owned by trainers, although Misty’s Mega Evolving Gyarados and Lance’s Red Gyarados are exceptions. Lance’s Red Gyarados even put up a brave fight against Leon’s unstoppable Gigantamaxed Charizard in Pokémon Journeys.

3 The Rock Snake Onix Is A Popular Choice Among Rock-Type Trainers

10 Best SnakeLike Pokémon In The Anime Ranked

With Brock’s Onix showing its might in the original Pokémon anime series, despite Steelix’s introduction in Gen II, Onix is still a desired choice for many strong Rock-type trainers and Gym Leaders.

Brock’s Onix easily defeated Pikachu once and should have picked up a second victory if not for sprinklers being set off and weakening it. Roark’s Onix also defeated Pikachu in their first match, along with Ash’s Turtwig. Known as the Rock Snake Pokémon, Onix has had a much better showing in the anime than its game stats suggest.

2 The Iron Snake Steelix Is A Tough Foe To Face

10 Best SnakeLike Pokémon In The Anime Ranked

Just like Onix, its evolved form Steelix is also used by several strong trainers in the anime. Known as the Iron Snake Pokémon, Steelix has a similarly serpentine shape and aesthetic to it, albeit made of steel rather than rock.

Brock’s Steelix is shown to Mega Evolve to destructive effect, with it being showcased in a fiery battle with Kiawe and his Turtonator in Sun & Moon. Although Olivine’s Gym Leader Jasmine didn’t get any knock-outs with her Steelix, the Steel-type was given good anime showings with Harrison’s defeating Ash’s Noctowl in Johto, Morrison’s defeating Pikachu and Torkoal in Hoenn, and Byron’s defying type disadvantages to knock out Ash’s Buizel in Sinnoh.

1 Rayquaza Commands The Skies As An Imposing Hybrid Of Dragon And Flying Serpent

The third of the Hoenn Legendary Pokémon alongside Kyogre and Groudon, Rayquaza is a powerful Dragon and Flying type with a long serpentine body and two arms. Its influences supposedly included the Chinese Dragon, the Lindworm, and the Aztec God Quetzalcoatl, known as a flying serpent.

Disregarding Rayquaza’s Dragon-type demeanor and its arms, its long body and general disposition certainly qualify Rayquaza as a snake-like Pokémon. In the anime, Rayquaza is shown to possess extraordinary destructive power, with it even being able to channel that power to stop an almighty calamity from ensuing when Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre face off.
