10 Once Brothers (2010)

Once Brothers may be the most interesting and slept-on documentary out of all of the “30 for 30” features that aired on ESPN. Director Michael Tolajian retraces the complicated story of longtime friends, Drazen Petrovic and Vlade Divac, whose personal relationship was severed due to being on opposite sides of the Yugoslavian civil war.

Petrovic’s tragic death occurred before he and Vlade could reconcile their differences. However, the film is not just sad, as the two players’ paths to the Olympics and NBA make for a fun and interesting watch. Once Brothers is a heartwrenching film, but worthy of a watch.

9 Lenny Cooke (2013) – Available on The Criterion Channel

In high school, Lebron James and Carmelo Anthony were ranked beneath Lenny Cooke as basketball prospects. This sports documentary tells the depressing story of how Cooke’s lack of work ethic, in tandem with off-the-court distractions throughout 2001, caused him to go undrafted in 2002, going on to never play in an NBA game.

Lenny Cooke eventually shows Cooke celebrating his birthday while he watches Lebron James competing for the NBA Finals. The audience watches as a man — who once competed against the greatest player in the world in front of scouts — struggles with regret and mediocrity.

8 Icarus (2017) – Available on Netflix

Similar to Tiger in being up close and personal, Icarus is a documentary directed by Brian Fogel, who sets out to discover the truth behind doping and cycling through two means: testing the PEDs on himself and documenting an insider Russian doctor building a case against Brooklyn Nets owner, Mikhail Prokhorov.

This film is certainly more thrilling than the typical sports documentary. It’s a rather multiplexed scandal that requires greater attention from the viewer, but Icarus makes it well worth the effort.

7 The Scheme (2020) – Available on HBO Max

The recent HBO documentary is centered around Christian Dawkins, a former representative of a management company caught bribing college basketball coaches to persuade players to join their clientele.

In the film, Dawkins and producers argue that he was entrapped by the FBI, as they initiated an undercover operation by disguising themselves as investors. Dawkins says they pressured him to act unethically. Accordingly, The Scheme demonstrates how Dawkins was afterward vilified by the coaches and other personnel he collaborated with, despite their hands being dirty as well. Someone who enjoys analyzing cover-up stories will enjoy this one.

6 Hit It Hard (2016)

Hit It Hard is simultaneously funny and heartfelt, as it recollects PGA golfer John Daly’s life and career. Daly became a fan-favorite because of his long-drives and his friendly, every-guy personality, which was a breath of fresh air in the sport.

Daly had personal struggles off the golf course that slipped into the media. However, his battles were more related to alcoholism than prescription drugs and prostitutes, like in Woods’ case. Nonetheless, in both cases, his personal adversity seemed to stem from his rush of wealth and fame, along with the ultimate pressure of trying to be a great professional golfer.

5 Connor McGregor: Notorious (2017) – Available on Fubo, Starz

Connor McGregor’s Notorious was filmed over four years, encapsulating the Irish MMA fighter’s journey from humble beginnings to shinning heights. The film’s mostly concerned with McGregor’s bout against Jose Aldo, who was knocked out in the first 13 seconds.

It was the first time that Aldo had lost in the octagon in 10 years and it sent McGregor’s already rising star to the stratosphere. Notorious looks into the fighter’s personal life, training regiment and more. McGregor’s loss to Dustin Poirier in UFC 257 puts him on a 1–2 skid, making it unclear whether he will return to the form that fans see in the film.

4 A Kid From Coney Island – Available on Netflix

Stephen Marbury may not be the most talked-about former NBA star out there, but he has an undeniably interesting life story. A Kid From Coney Island looks into Marbury’s childhood, his NBA career, and the astounding success he found in the Chinese Basketball Association.

He played for the Beijing Ducks and won three championships for the nation’s capital, essentially making him China’s Michael Jordan. A Kid From Coney Island offers an interesting cross-cultural dynamic that is unique from most sports documentaries.

3 Team Foxcatcher – Available on Netflix

The theatrical film starring Steve Carell and Channing Tatum is a fantastic sports/drama based on the odd partnership between wealthy John du Pont and the USA Olympic wrestling team.

However, for those seeking more insight into the tragedy, Team Foxcatcher dives into deeper details with an abundance of footage. The Camp Foxcatcher story is one of the most shocking tales in the history of American sports.

2 Iverson – Available on Fubo, DirecTV

Iverson seeks to uncover how the “y’all talking bout practice” NBA player, also known as “The Answer,” was underappreciated and misconstrued by both the NBA and national media. The Hall-of-Famer contributes an honest, uncut recollection of his career and life in the public eye.

The documentary also includes electric compilations of Iverson highlights, from ball-handling and breaking ankles to mid-air acrobatics around the room. He’s such a generational talent, yet he’s most known for his “practice” press-conference outburst.

1 No No: A Dockumentary – Available on Prime Video

Dock Ellis was an MLB starting pitcher who played in 1968-79, spending most of his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Ellis famously threw a no-hitter against the San Diego Padres in June 1970 while under the influence of LSD.

The story didn’t go public until the Pittsburgh Press broke the story in 1984. Despite the documentary’s title, No No goes much further than his no-hitter, exploring other aspects of Ellis’ fascinating life while recollecting race relations during the time period.
