Armed with a trusty blaster at his side and piloting an Arwing, Fox McCloud has been the star of one of Nintendo’s most action-packed franchises: Star Fox. Leading a team of starfighters, Fox travels from planet to planet to fight the evil Andross and his legion of invaders.

The question is, which Star Fox games are the best? Sadly, Star Fox is one of Nintendo’s more neglected franchises, with a new game releasing very rarely. So with that in mind, this list will showcase not only Star Fox titles but other titles in which Fox and/or members of his team have guest-starred.

10 Star Fox: Assault (2005) – 67

10 Best Star Fox Games Ranked By Metacritic

Continuing to experiment, Nintendo collaborated with Namco to create a unique experience that provided the classic arcade flying missions but adds on-foot missions as Fox along with different vehicular combat. There is the usual single-player arcade mode, but Star Fox: Assault dives into the multiplayer aspect.

The multiplayer is in a similar vein as GoldenEye 007, one of many Nintendo 64 games that still hold up today with a hint of classic Halo. The ambition was clear and admirable but the controls for the non-Arwing segments weren’t as fluid with some iffy lock-on mechanics.

9 Star Fox Zero (2016) – 69

10 Best Star Fox Games Ranked By Metacritic

After so many years of only appearing in Smash Bros. games, Star Fox finally returned with a new title on the Nintendo Wii U. Star Fox Zero ditched the on-foot gameplay and stuck to vehicles and while it was a much-needed return for the franchise, it also disappointed some fans.

There were changes to the Arwing controls that made it difficult to grasp the gameplay. There is also a lack of innovation, which makes the game often feel more akin to an HD lesser remake of Star Fox 64 with some new levels, rather than a next-gen Star Fox game. It still manages to provide a fun experience but it overall was given a lukewarm reception when it should have been one of Nintendo’s greatest hits.

8 Star Fox Guard (2016) – 74

10 Best Star Fox Games Ranked By Metacritic

This spin-off is a tower defense game in which the player must defend a base from an endless army of robots, controlling security cameras via the Wii U gamepad. On its own, it’s a solid defense game with different weapons and upgrades to get but it’s nothing that is worth its full price.

But for the low price on the Nintendo eShop, Star Fox Guard is definitely worth it. It starts off relatively simple but gets surprisingly hard and shows that there were fun games to play on the Wii U. It’s a case of a Wii U title that deserves to be remastered for the Nintendo Switch.

7 Starlink: Battle For Atlas (2018) – 76

10 Best Star Fox Games Ranked By Metacritic

Mixing gameplay and toy collecting, Starlink: Battle For Atlas is an open-world space shooter in which the player can create their own ships in the real world via toys and put them into the game. This is similar to Skylanders or the sadly discontinued Disney Infinity series.

Switch owners have the chance to get exclusive Star Fox content. Play as Fox McCloud and fight Star Wolf in exclusive missions, along with the bulk of the main game itself that was considered a refreshing return for space shooters. Some fans have even claimed that the Starlink gameplay style is the best that Star Fox has played thus far.

6 Star Fox Command (2006) – 76

10 Best Star Fox Games Ranked By Metacritic

With the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection being shut down, the big gimmick of playing with up to four friends online to battle each other is dead. So all that remains is the single-player content which brings back classic Star Fox gameplay but with a twist of nearly everything controlled via touch screen.

The result may not be one of the best DS titles that everyone should try out but it is a good one, even if the controls take a while to learn. While it’s not considered a top-tier Star Fox adventure, it was a fun game for the Nintendo DS, with unique Arwings for each Star Fox member to diversify the gameplay, but it did suffer from a very strict time limit in some missions.

5 Star Fox 64 3D (2011) – 81

10 Best Star Fox Games Ranked By Metacritic

It is exactly how it sounds: it is Star Fox 64 but remade with slightly better graphics for the Nintendo 3DS. Other than a few extras, it is essentially the same game, but now for the handheld system. This might disappoint those wanting an expansion on the classic but appeal to those that simply want a chance to play Star Fox 64 on the go.

There is an option to use motion controls for piloting the Arwing, which works fair enough but the more nostalgic players can simply use the analog stick and buttons. Overall, it’s a solid and polished remake that keeps what fans loved about the original and made it one of many beloved games for the 3DS that everyone should try.

4 Star Fox Adventures (2002) – 82

10 Best Star Fox Games Ranked By Metacritic

On release, Star Fox Adventures was met with animosity from fans due to its taking a rather different approach. The arcade Arwing shooting was put on the backburner in favor of an action-adventure starring Fox McCloud on foot in an alien world with dinosaurs.

It plays akin to The Legend Of Zelda, and while it’s easy to see why purists would not care for it, it has garnered praise, hence the 82 rating on Metacritic. For an attempt at a Zelda clone, it could have been worse and it features a unique story, grand visuals, and even some vehicular game sprinkled in there that can still be enjoyable.

3 Star Fox 64 (1997) – 88

10 Best Star Fox Games Ranked By Metacritic

More or less a reboot of the original Star Fox for the SNES, Star Fox 64 is one of the all-time favorites due to its already addicting Arwing arcade combat. Add in quirky memorable characters of the Star Fox team, villains such as Star Wolf and Andross, along with a lengthy campaign: and it was a big hit for gamers in the ’90s.

In the large campaign map, the player can unlock branching paths by taking different routes in levels and beating different bosses. This allows for a lot of replayability, experimenting with what routes throughout the Lylat System are the best, depending on the player.

2 Super Smash Bros. Brawl (2008) – 93

10 Best Star Fox Games Ranked By Metacritic

Fox McCloud has appeared in every Super Smash Bros. title, including one of the Nintendo Wii’s best-selling games: Super Smash Bros. Brawl. In them all, Fox has evolved to fit the portrayal of the time mixing hand-to-hand combat with laser blaster attacks and other various attacks based on elements from the Star Fox games.

Joining Fox in all of the Smash Bros. games is Falco Lombardi. Unlike other Smash Bros. games, Super Smash Bros. Brawl features a story mode to help unlock characters known as The Subspace Emissary. And in the campaign, both Fox and Falco play significant roles.

1 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (2018) – 93

What else can be said about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at this point? It’s the biggest game of the series and many fans would agree it is the best, thanks to smooth controls, stellar visuals, and a massive roster of characters with more and more added every year since its release.

Of course, on that roster are characters Fox McCloud, Falco Lombardi, and even Wolf O’Donnell. Like many characters, they play similarly to their counterparts in previous Smash Bros. games.
