10 Best Video Games Based On The Terminator Franchise (That Are Super Underrated)

The Terminator might just be one of the most popular film franchises ever, and it also proved to the world that James Cameron is more than capable of helming blockbuster movies. With all the great press the franchise has received, it would be easy to assume that there would be great licensed games to go with it.

Unfortunately, even though the series sits squarely in the sci-fi and action genres, developers have always struggled to turn it into a compelling gaming experience. All of that to say, these games might not be the most faithful or the most fun even, but they all have a special charm to them.

10 Terminator: I’m Back

10 Best Video Games Based On The Terminator Franchise (That Are Super Underrated)

Terminator: I’m Back (pardon the terrible joke in the title) was an early mobile game that came out way back in 2005. It’s pretty much what you would expect from a game that could be played on a Nokia brick.

It’s a fairly basic shoot-em-up that’s pretty repetitive, but all of that being said, it’s at least entertaining, especially when the entire format of games at that point was stuff along the lines of Snake or Pac-Man (which are of course classics, but even back then, a little tired).

9 Skynet

Back during the 90s, a company that’s now better known for plenty of other popular properties was pretty deep in a series of Terminator themed video games. That company is none other than Bethesda, who makes the popular Elder Scrolls and Fallout series.

Skynet was originally supposed to be an early form of DLC for The Terminator: Future Shock but got a standalone release. It looks pretty much like a Doom clone, but it’s a very pretty Doom clone for its time.

8 The Terminator: Future Shock

The Terminator: Future Shock is actually one of the most important and overlooked games in the entire genre, let alone just among games that are Terminator-related.

The game was one of the first that used the computer mouse for aiming instead of the keyboard, in addition to using entirely 3D-rendered environments, although there were still a couple of sprites. Its sequel, SkyNet, would feature a deathmatch mode that also got tons of praise.

7 Terminator 2: Judgement Day

Terminator 2: Judgement Day kind of received mixed reviews from critics when it came out, but aside from the criticisms which included people calling out the difficulty, it’s been called one of the best games graphics-wise of its era.

The game is also a little bit repetitive, but the gameplay it does offer is a pretty fun time. The cutscenes are legitimately great looking, and it’s actually a pretty decent adaptation of the film.

6 Gears 5

Gears 5 isn’t necessarily a Terminator game, but it’s definitely a big part of the multiplayer in the most recent addition to the series.

The gameplay is what one would come to expect from a Gears Of War title, 3rd-person competitive multiplayer gameplay being the focus of the game. In the multiplayer, the player can also play as either Sarah Connor or a T-8000 Terminator unit.

5 Terminator 3: The Redemption

10 Best Video Games Based On The Terminator Franchise (That Are Super Underrated)

Terminator 3: The Redemption is much better than the game that came before it, Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines. It’s still very hard and a little repetitive, but on the side of this game, the graphics are really good for the Xbox and Playstation 2 era.

It also includes tons of different types of gameplay, most of which are 3rd person. There are also driving levels and rail-shooter sections that can be played co-op.

4 T2: Judgement Day (PC)

10 Best Video Games Based On The Terminator Franchise (That Are Super Underrated)

This one goes way back to the early dast of gaming since the developers behind it realized that a title this big would absolutely need a DOS port.

While it hasn’t exactly aged incredibly well (which only makes sense considering it’s a DOS game) it’s fairly entertaining and was sure to please fans of the series when it came out. While it’s not without its detractors, it looks pretty okay for a DOS game and there are even segments in different styles of gameplay.

3 The Terminator (Genesis)

The Genesis version of The Terminator video game is like a lot of the games for the console, a side-scrolling shooter in which the player plays as the protagonist of the first film, Kyle Reese.

Even though it’s a bit dated at this point, it’ one of the better games of its genre on the Genesis. The main gripe people have with it is that it’s just a little bit short, but then again, a lot of games from this generation were once players learned the game.

2 Terminator: Salvation

As far as 3rd person cover shooters go, one could do a lot worse than Terminator: Salvation. Even though fans were pretty upset that Christian Bale refused to lend his voice-acting talents to the game, the game wasn’t without its fans either.

The game doesn’t have any sort of multiplayer capability, however, it does have a local co-op mode. It’s a legitimately fun little cover shooter.

1 Robocop Vs. Terminator

Robocop… Terminator… and Frank Miller? Yes. There was a limited edition comic book series on Dark Horse written by Frank Miller that did exactly what it said on the label, Robocop vs. Terminator.

The series was loosely adapted into a pretty often forgotten video game which was released for the Genesis and the SNES. It’s an incredibly stylized look at what these properties could have accomplished in video games.
