A new roster of X-Men was just announced, giving the team its first organized membership in the Dawn Of X era in Marvel Comics. This new lineup includes some classic X-Men like Cyclops, Jean Grey, Sunfire, and Rogue, as well as newcomers like Polaris, Synch, and Laura Kinney as Wolverine. They have the potential to stack up against some of the best X-Men lineups of all time.
The X-Men have always been a bit of a revolving door, with no one roster remaining static for very long. But several teams from the X-Men’s nearly six-decade history have become iconic and emblematic of the era in which they appeared. Some of the best weren’t even officially X-Men, reflecting the team’s often fluid dynamic.
10 Astonishing X-Men
The X-Men vaulted completely into the public imagination with their first movie in 2000. The uniform black look of the films filtered down to the comics but 2004’s Astonishing X-Men took the team back to its colorful roots. The team also brought together some classic X-Men, like Kitty Pryde, Cyclops, and Wolverine, and put them together with relative newcomers like Emma Frost, who had been one of the evilest X-Men villains.
The interpersonal dynamics were rich and the art by John Cassady was excellent, making this one of the better modern rosters.
9 New X-Men
Astonishing X-Men was in many ways a reaction to the New X-Men, the epic Grant Morrison run that changed course on the X-Men for the 21st century. The team consisted of many classic X-Men including new members like Cassandra Nova.
Grant Morrison brought their characteristic unique imagination to the book and dives deep into heady concepts like the Children of the Vault that are still being explored in the current comics. It also introduced the unexpected romance between Cyclops and Emma Frost.
8 X-Men Red
X-Men is a short-lived X-Men squad with Jean Grey at the helm. It featured some of mutantkind’s heaviest hitters, including Storm and Namor. Also taking part were Nightcrawler, Gambit, Gentle, Trinary, Honey Badger, and briefly, Wolverine.
The team faced off against Cassandra Nova, giving Jean Grey a chance to display her impressive Omega-Level mutant powers. She defeated Nova by projecting a false construct, not unlike Luke Skywalker did in the climactic scene of The Last Jedi.
7 Excalibur
One of the best X-Men rosters wasn’t officially called the X-Men. Excalibur was essentially the British branch of the team, formed in the tragic aftermath of the apparent death of the main X-Men team. Survivors Kitty Pryde, Kurt Wagner, and Rachel Summers team up with Captain Britain and Meggan to form a truly unique squad.
The zany tone of the book, especially in the early issues written by Chris Claremont and drawn by Alan Davis, distinguished it from the often melancholic tone of the X-Men during the late ’80s. The team was also early explorers of the multiverse, something the MCU seems poised to investigate itself in the near future.
6 Marauders
Kitty Pryde has been at the heart of many X-Men rosters over the years. One of the best is her current team, the Marauders. The Marauders are functionally the Krakoan navy in the Dawn Of X era and are an extension of both the X-Men and the high stakes machinations of the Hellfire Club.
With Kitty now closely aligned with the club as it’s Red Queen, she, along with the White Queen, Storm, Bishop, Iceman, and Pyro all play a major role in the unfolding drama in the current X-Men comics.
5 Original Team
The original team of X-Men remains one of the most iconic in all of Marvel Comics. The original five X-Men, including Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Iceman, and Angel, remain the foundation for the sprawling team and its ancillaries today.
All of the original members have grown and evolved in fascinating ways in the last sixty years, but their youthful optimism and innocence remain compelling and could potentially serve as the method for how the MCU chooses to introduce mutants into the franchise.
4 New Mutants
The New Mutants movie may not have been worth the delay for the movie, but the comic book team the movie was based on is among the best. The concept behind the New Mutants was a class of new trainees to graduate into the X-Men.
Though only a few of the original squad did, many remain part of the larger X-Men family. Cannonball, Sunspot, Karma, Moonstar, Wolfsbane, and Magik, one of the most powerful magicians in the Marvel universe, are a major force to be reckoned with in the comics.
3 Outback Era
The ’80s saw a lot of turnover in the ranks of the X-Men. One of the best rosters during this period is commonly known as the Outback team. They operate in secret out of the Australian Outback in the late ’80s, after the world believes they have all died in the finale of The Fall Of The Mutants crossover.
This team consisted of Wolverine, Storm, Rogue, Colossus, Psylocke, Dazzler, and Longshot, with the occasional teleportation assist from Gateway. The team would remain in the shadows for two years, before emerging back into the spotlight in the early ’90s.
2 All-New X-Men
The Outback team consisted of many, but not all, of the classic members of the iconic All-New, All-Different team. This team of international heroes began a new era f0r the X-Men franchise, which was on the verge of cancellation in the mid-’70s.
Colossus, Banshee, Sunfire, Thunderbird, Storm, Nightcrawler, and Wolverine joined Cyclops in Giant-Size X-Men #1 to breathe new life into the franchise. It remains one of the best lineups in all of comics. Many of the characters like Storm and Nightcrawler were the creations of legendary artist Dave Cockrum.
1 Blue And Gold Teams
X-Men #1 became the biggest selling comic book of all time in 1991, selling 8 million copies. The book, written by longtime X-Men writer Chris Claremont and artist Jim Lee, established two separate X-Men squads, the Blue and Gold teams. These groups formed the basis for the team as it appeared in the ’90s X-Men: The Animated Series.
The Gold Team was comprised of Archangel, Colossus, Iceman, Jean Grey, Storm, and Bishop, while the Blue Team was Wolverine, Psylocke, Gambit, Rogue, Cyclops, Beast, and Jubilee. The teams would maintain their color divisions for a few years before that eventually faded into one larger team.
