Most horror villains look like monsters. Whether they are wearing a bloody hockey mask or a red and green striped sweater, silver screen killers leave a lot to be desired when it comes to their attire. However, there are some horror villains that prefer to make a killing with their fashion as well as their chainsaws.
In some cases, these horror villain fashionistas ward off suspicion from others because of how well they dress. For others, they are so gloriously over-the-top that they clearly stand out from their copycat counterparts.
10 Candyman
Candyman is based on a Clive Barker story about a Black artist murdered in the 19th century after a wealthy white man learned he had a relationship with his daughter. Candyman died when a mob cut off his hand and covered him with honey, thereby attracting enough bees to sting him to death. Through a convoluted plot device involving magic, his vengeful spirit is transferred into a mirror.
In the present day, whenever someone says his name three times while looking in a mirror, Candyman shows up and kills them. Played by Tony Todd, Candyman is distinguished by his beautiful long coat made of suede leather with a Viscose lining. This designer coat, however, hides an ugly secret: Candyman’s body is still covered with all the bees that originally killed him.
9 Rose The Hat
Rose the Hat is the primary antagonist in The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep. Unlike Jack Torrance, who would never be accused of being a well-dressed man, Rose the Hat possesses a unique look with her stylish top hat and colorful scarves.
With a demon shirt that looks better on Rose than it could ever look on Jack, and braids that looked better than it ever had the right to, Rose the Hat is easily one of the most sharply dressed villains in modern cinema.
8 Damien
Nothing is more sinister than a little kid in a suit, and that helped make the Antichrist even scarier in the 1976 Richard Donner movie The Omen. In the film, an American ambassador, Robert Thorn, secretly adopts a baby after his son dies mysteriously during childbirth. Robert and his wife name their adopted son Damien and for a few years, the family lives a normal life. Once the murders begin, however, they discover that their son is the Antichrist.
Damien displays his preppy fashion sense throughout the film with cardigans and wool slacks being the two preferred clothing items for the son of Satan. At the end of the film, when he attends the funerals of the adopted parents he helped kill, Damien is still dressed immaculately in a little tailored suit and snug wool cap.
7 Beetlejuice
While many people might not find Beetlejuice that attractive, he has a style and flamboyance that has one important fan: himself. Beetlejuice is an egotistical demon who acts as an exorcist that can chase out the living to help the dead peacefully exist in the afterlife.
With his signature pinstriped suit, Beetlejuice’s fashion sense is flashy and over-the-top. He even knows when to dress for the proper occasion; in his botched attempt to marry Lydia Deetz, he wore a wonderfully tacky crimson tuxedo suit with an understated pink ruffle dress shirt.
6 Pennywise
Can someone be well dressed and unnervingly creepy at the same time? In the case of Pennywise the Dancing Clown, the answer is a resounding yes.
In the 1990 television miniseries It, Pennywise was dressed up like a regular clown: a red nose, an equally bright red wig, and a colorful yet straightforward jester outfit. However, in the 2017 and 2019 It movies, Pennywise received a fashion upgrade and was dapperly dressed in frills, ruffles, and fancy boots. While the 1990 version of Pennywise sported a regular clown costume to inspire chills, the cinematic Pennywise adopted a decadent and decrepit look that made his evil clown look menacing.
5 Hannibal Lecter
Hannibal Lecter is not only a cannibalistic killer but also an ally for FBI agent Clarice Starling in the 1991 film The Silence of the Lambs. In his minimal screen time, Hannibal initially showed a drab fashion style by wearing blue prison jumpers or plain white undershirts.
Dr. Lecter upgraded his fashion style in the 2001 film Hannibal, where he appeared sharply dressed in expensively tailored suits. Add in Hannibal’s appearances on the TV series, where he was also dressed in designer clothes, and Hannibal is a horror villain who cares as much about his appearance as he does with what is on the menu.
4 Sil
Sil is an alien/human hybrid from the 1995 movie Species. Sil’s primary mission in the film is to mate with someone by any means necessary so her species can take over the world. Sil’s strength and violent nature often left her mates dead when she finished with them.
When Sil begins her quest to find a mate, she discovers she needs an outfit that will get the attention of any man who crosses her path. Her initial attempt is more comedic than effective as she wears a frilly white wedding dress. Sil soon discovers that a bridal gown isn’t the best way to attract the male population of Los Angeles and soon ditches it for more sensible outfits.
3 Pinhead
Pinhead is a special kind of best-dressed horror villain. Pinhead’s costume includes a black leather long-sleeved top that covers his neck. He compliments his top with a long black leather dress that flows to the floor.
Pinhead also wears a large black corset across his waist that effectively slims his figure. Perhaps most famously, Pinhead sports the ultimate fashion accessory: a face full of pins that are embedded in his skull. The Hellraiser demon is easily one of the most stylish and fashion-forward villains in horror movie history.
2 Patrick Bateman
When it comes to best-dressed horror villains, Patrick Bateman has everyone beat when it comes to style and panache.
American Psycho takes place in the superficial world of 1980s corporate culture when yuppies ruled the workplace and image was everything. What made Patrick unique was that he was so obsessed with looking better than everyone around him, he would kill anyone to achieve the perfect look. From his immaculate tan to his custom Brooks Brothers suits, Bateman looked perfect from head to toe.
1 Dracula
While Patrick Bateman was easily the best-dressed horror villain when it comes to modern-day clothing, there is one man who trumps him in almost every way: Count Dracula.
In Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Gary Oldman takes on the role of the legendary bloodsucker. The movie introduces Dracula as an old man with his hair wrapped in two buns and his body draped in a crimson red cloak. When he arrives in London, Dracula de-ages his appearance and adopts the “modern” look of the Edwardian era aristocrat: top hat, long coat, and dark blue spectacles. It’s no surprise Eiko Ishioka won the Oscar for Best Costume Design for her work in creating Dracula’s immaculate fashion sense.
