10 Biggest Differences Between The Eternals Movie And The Comics

Spoilers for Eternals.

Eternals introduced a vast array of characters and concepts to the MCU, drawing on the elaborate mythology created by legendary comic book writer and artist Jack Kirby. Kirby invented an entire mythos with the first issue of the Eternals comic in 1976, but there are major differences between the source material and the new movie.

Some of those changes involve streamlining the mythology, which was as complex as something like Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel Dune. Other changes involve the look, gender, and powers of the many characters, updating the comic for a modern audience while still retaining the unique quality that made it so fascinating to begin with.

10 The Origin

10 Biggest Differences Between The Eternals Movie And The Comics

The origin of the Eternals in the comics is complicated, going back millions of years. The movie has simplified it somewhat. In the comics, the Celestials, among the most powerful cosmic beings in the Marvel Universe, create the Eternals from an experiment on early mankind. In the movie, the Eternals have no connection genetically to humanity. They are in fact synthetic constructs created by the Celestials in the distant past and sent to infinite worlds to safeguard the evolution of sentient life.

9 The Purpose Of The Celestials

The origin and purpose of the Celestials are just as complex in the comics, and also the subject of another major change in the movie. In the comics, the Celestials travel from world to world and experiment arbitrarily in the evolution of species (upsetting the famously hands-off character of The Watcher in the comics).

They create Eternal variants (and Deviant ones) from existing species and then observe their progress. Eventually, they return to these planets to judge them. In the movie, the purpose of the Celestials is to create other Celestials by absorbing the energy of sentient life, destroying them in the process.

8 Their Powers

10 Biggest Differences Between The Eternals Movie And The Comics

The Eternals rank among the most powerful superheroes in both the comics and the MCU. In the comic books, all of them share the same powers. These include standard superhero abilities like superhuman strength, stamina, and speed, but they also include even more amazing ones like telepathy and matter manipulation. In the movie, the Eternals are each assigned a specific power. Each of the main attributes of the group is split up so Sersi gets transmutation, Makkari super speed, and Ikaris flight and energy beams.

7 The Deviants

The Deviants also undergo some changes for the MCU. The classic villains of the Eternals are closely related to them in the comics. In the mythology established by Jack Kirby, they are an evolutionary offshoot of mankind who are monstrous in nature but still possess super intelligence and superpowers, In the movie, the Deviants have no connection to humanity or the Eternals genetically. They are presented as much more animalistic and without any intelligence or agency until they begin draining the powers of the Eternals.

6 Olympia

10 Biggest Differences Between The Eternals Movie And The Comics

In the opening crawl of the movie, the Eternals are said to come from a distant planet called Olympia. In the comics, this isn’t the case. The Eternals were created on Earth millions of years ago by the Celestials. They did create a glorious city in the ancient past that was called Olympia, though.

The exact location of Olympia has shifted in the comics. It has been shown to be in ancient Greece, Antarctica, and also the Negative Zone. Olympia was founded after the fall of Titanos, the original settlement of the Eternals on Earth.

5 The Domo

In the movie, the Eternals arrive on Earth in a massive triangular ship known as the Domo. Though the Eternals possess many extraordinary vehicles and advanced technology in the comics (many of them created by the engineer Phastos), there is no such ship. There is a character named Domo, though. Domo first appeared in The Eternals #5 in 1976, as the attendant of Zuras, the original leader of the Eternals. Domo floated around in a highly advanced chair that incorporated many of Jack Kirby’s classic design elements.

4 Ajak

Some characters like Domo were left out of the movie. Others were changed. Ajak is one of the biggest examples of this. In the movie, Ajak, played by Selma Hayek, is the leader of the group on Earth. In the comics, that’s initially a character named Zuras. Ajak is not a leader in the comics but a member of the Polar Eternals, a different branch of the species on Earth. In the movie, Ajak has the power to heal, but the character in Marvel Comics possesses all the vast powers of their kind, including flight, telepathy, and illusion casting.

3 Makkari

10 Biggest Differences Between The Eternals Movie And The Comics

Makkari is one of the fastest superheroes in the MCU, shown in the movie to be as fast as some of the most powerful versions of The Flash. The comic book Makkari has speed, but all the other Eternals powers as well. This is simplified for the MCU, though Makkari clearly generates enormous physical strength through their speed.

Makkari is also a man in the comics and wears a distinctive helmet that didn’t make it into the movie. Lauren Ridloff plays the character in the movie and is also the first deaf superhero in the MCU.

2 Ikaris

10 Biggest Differences Between The Eternals Movie And The Comics

Ikaris gets some of the biggest changes in the movie. The comic book character is nominally the leader of the team, but in the MCU, he is the lieutenant behind Ajak and later Sersi. His powers are also simplified to just be flight and the ability to fire laser beams from his eyes. The biggest change for Ikaris is his motivations. In the comics, he is one of the bravest Eternals and fights for humanity. That’s very different from the movie, where he betrays his teammates to fulfill the mission of the Celestials and destroy the Earth.

1 Kingo

Another character with big changes from the comics is Kingo. Kingo Sunen appears to be Japanese in Marvel Comics and becomes a great samurai and swordsman. The MCU presents Kingo, played by Kumail Nanjiani, as a man of Indian descent who fires energy beams from his fingers.

The two versions of the character do have one thing in common. Both are actors. The comic book Kingo eventually becomes a movie star in Japan, while Kingo becomes a major star, director, and producer in Bollywood films for nearly a century.
