Newsies
Open the gates and seize the day with this ’90s gem featuring a phenomenal performance from Christian Bale and a powerful soundtrack. Newsies might have been a bomb when it first premiered, but some things just get better with age. Thanks to its cult status, the film received a full-on stage adaptation, also available on Disney+.
While it might have somewhat of a niche audience, there’s no denying that true musical lovers will get sucked into the hype and energy of the songs, the message of perseverance and triumph, and stage-worthy performances.
Annie
Yes, it’s a remake of an already classic movie-musical, but don’t let that factor stand in the way of watching Disney’s take on Little Orphan Annie. Before the strange and unusual modernization in 2014, Disney’s adaptation sought to revitalize the classic musical and the result was actually a decent movie.
Although the original will always be the favorite child, the remake comes with the same amount of heart, fun, and incredible performances from the likes of Kathy Bates, Victor Garber, Kristin Chenoweth, and Alan Cumming. Often overlooked, the film really does offer an excellent experience.
Into The Woods
Depending on their exposure to the musical or even Sondheim’s work in general, viewers will either really love Into the Woods, or simply accept it as Disney’s attempt at adapting the stage musical to a film format. Though both incarnations of the play have their moments, the Disney version is definitely the most accessible.
Although a few controversial decisions were made for the film adaptation, such as omitting Rapunzel’s death and including a new song or two, the movie is packed with talent and an imaginative delivery and design. A different experience from Sondheim’s stage production, but one that certainly has more than a few fans.
Oklahoma!
Rogers and Hammerstein are a pair of names any seasoned musical buff should know almost immediately, and Disney definitely has the highlights of their work. Case in point, Oklahoma is just one of the golden-age musicals currently available to all Disney+ subscribers.
The musical tale of Laurie Williams and her romantic encounters with Curly and Jud has been considered a classic for decades and even earned itself a spot on the National Film Registry, truly solidifying the film’s classic status. Easily a lesson in musicals 101, it’s a production all seasoned fans should be familiar with.
Hello Dolly
While most Disney fans might only know this film from its association with Wall-E, Hello Dolly is a catchy and peppy musical classic that will have even the newest fans tapping their feet and humming the songs. Dolly Levi’s quest to find a marriage match for the crotchety Horace Vandergelder leads into a musical romantic-comedy that will leave viewers smiling ear-to-ear.
Barbara Streisand is the reason to watch this film, but it’s also packed with the phenomenal talents of Walter Matthau, Michael Crawford, and even Satchmo himself, Louis Armstrong, to round out the cast. Easily one of the best musicals outside the Disney name.
Cinderella
While Disney’s animated adaptation of Cinderella’s story is indeed iconic, this TV version of the Rogers and Hammerstein musical was perhaps many a young theater kid’s introduction to the medium of musical theatre. With phenomenal musical talents like Brandi, Bernadette Peters, and the incomparable Whitney Huston thrown into the mix, it’s definitely worth the time to watch.
Although the musical has been filmed two times before, Disney’s version is probably the most well-known. Considering Julie Andrews was in the original production, that’s quite a feat by itself. Leave it to the house of mouse to pull out all the stops with a classic fairytale.
The Sound Of Music
If there’s one musical movie nearly all viewers (regardless of exposure status) should know, it’s The Sound of Music. A film that’s been homaged, parodied, and referenced hundreds of times over, the musical tale of the Von Trapp Family Singers has practically been engraved in pop culture for decades.
The image of Maria singing through the sweeping vista of the Austrian Alps is an image that no movie-goer will forget easily as the famous music by Oscar and Hammerstein swells over the gorgeous scenery. From the iconic songs on the Disney soundtrack to a palate of Oscar-winning and nominated elements, to say the movie has a bit of a stellar reputation is an understatement.
Beauty And The Beast
Of course, it would be a great disservice to the studio to not include at least a few of their animated classics, and Beauty and the Beast is perhaps one of their most iconic. Although the musical version came well after the film’s debut, it only help solidify the Disney name in the medium.
It might be animated, but so much detail and attention to musicality were given to the film that it’s practically impossible to not include it as a classic movie-musical. Of course, when a lyricist and composer like Howard Ashman is involved, the result is nothing short of Broadway-worthy.
The Lion King
When it comes to Disney musicals, the only one who could outdo the Best-Picture-nominated Beauty and the Beast would have to be The Lion King. At one time, the film was considered the height of animated features, and it wouldn’t be untrue to say that the soundtrack by Elton John and Tim Rice didn’t aid in that reputation.
There’s a very good reason that the film inspired one of the longest-running stage musicals on Broadway, because the foundation was laid perfectly in 1994. From the script to the songs, the film had the bones for a gripping, comedic, and even emotional musical story. Simply put, it displays all the elements an award winning-production should have.
Mary Poppins
Considered Walt Disney’s magnum opus, Mary Poppins is the standard by which all Disney musicals are judged. The film could have been a stage production long before the Broadway version existed. Having such talents as Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke in the cast and the Sherman Brothers providing the music and lyrics, Walt had the recipe for success from the beginning.
Every choice made in this Disney classic is done with purpose, every song has a sincere and lingering quality, and the message of the film is so universal that it’s retained its beloved status well after its premiere. Like the penguins say, “the cream of the crop, tip of the top is Mary Poppins and there we stop.”
