The Academy usually only look at dramas for their acting nominations. However, some comedic turns have managed to earn nods at the Oscars.

It’s clear as day that the Academy doesn’t have much interest in change, as they often refuse to acknowledge that thrillers and superhero movies deserve as much attention as Oscar-bait dramas. But every once in a while, a comedy role somehow sneaks in to the nominations.

Just as comedians can take on dramatic roles, dramatic actors can take on comedic roles, and more often than not they have great timing and the performance holds up against their serious roles. In some cases, they’re even better. Having the amount of prestige that they do and managing to continue surprising audiences, there are an unexpected amount of comedy roles that have been nominated for Academy Awards.

10 Edward Norton In Birdman (2014)

Essentially playing an exaggerated version of himself, Edward Norton’s hilarious role as Mike in Birdman sees him lock horns with Michael Keaton. In real life, Norton is known to be hard to work with and demanding behind the scenes, and his role in Birdman plays into this.

It amazingly reaches it’s peak when they start fighting each other just as Mike is getting changed, and it’s for reasons like this that make it one of the best movie performances of the decade.

9 Meryl Streep In The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

Meryl Streep has never been typecast in dramas, as she has always been open to comedies, musicals, and a million other things. And she will always be nominated for an Academy Award, whatever the genre.

But here, in The Devil Wears Prada, the nomination really was well earned, as she played the evil fashionista based on Anna Wintour, meaning the character had a ton of savage quotes.

8 Scarlett Johansson In Jojo Rabbit (2019)

After turning the Thor series from a humdrum, greyed-out, run of the mill superhero movie into a thrilling space odyssey, Taika Waititi proved that he could turn the worst in to the best. So the director set his sights on doing the same with Hitler and somehow turned him into one of cinema’s most memorable imaginary mentors.

But Jojo Rabbit also features Scarlett Johansson as the main character’s mother, who is a secret anti-Nazi and the moral compass of the movie. Her performance is equally hilarious and endearing.

7 Renée Zellweger In Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)

Playing the hapless journalist caught in a love triangle, Renée Zellweger elevated Bridget Jones’s Diary from a standard rom-com to a captivating romp.

Zellweger has managed to milk two more movies out of it, making it one of the few Oscar nominated characters to appear in more than one film. Though it might come as a surprise, the sequels are pretty underrated by some, especially Bridget Jones’s Baby.

6 Michael Keaton In Birdman (2014)

Along with Edward Norton’s self-referential performance in the movie, Michael Keaton gives a similarly hilarious delivery in the philosophical black comedy.

Playing a character who is haunted by Birdman, a former superhero role that he once occupied, Keaton finds himself trying to earn critical respect by penning his own Broadway play. However, he inadvertently ends up wandering Times Square in his underwear instead.

5 Tom Hanks In Big (1988)

It might be easy for people to forget that Tom Hanks got his start in comedy, as he is now regarded as one of the greatest actors of all time, having not one, but two Academy Award wins.

Well, in a parallel universe, Hanks’ role in Big would have gotten him his third statue. Playing a 15-year-old in a 30-something’s body, Hanks portrays the toy obsessed industry titan terrifically, and it’s one of the best Tom Hanks movies.

4 June Squib In Nebraska (2013)

Nebraska, shot in black and white and directed by Alexander Payne, is one of the most underrated movies of the 21st century not only because of Bruce Dern and Will Forte’s lead performances but for June Squib’s hilarious supporting role as Bruce Dern’s wife.

Being the typical old wife who dishes out as much food as she can make while being over judgemental and protective of her old frail husband, Squib’s role isn’t just hilarious, but it’s heartwarming too.

3 Melissa McCarthy In Bridesmaids (2011)

Easily the most overtly comedic role, as the movie sees her character of Megan literally defecate in a sink, so it was an amazing achievement that Melissa McCarthy was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

Though Bridesmaids features some of the funniest scenes of the past 10 years, the movie is not only funny, but it’s full of relatable life lessons too, many of which come from the meat sandwich loving Megan herself.

2 Brad Pitt In Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (2019)

It was the first Academy Award that Brad Pitt won for acting, and it had been a long time coming, but the actor earned it for his role of Cliff Booth in the controversial Quentin Tarantino movie, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

Cliff Booth is arguably Brad Pitt’s best character, and Pitt brings it to life, whether it’s starting fights with Bruce Lee or smoking an LCD dipped cigarette.

1 Jonah Hill In The Wolf Of Wall Street (2013)

Jonah Hill stole the show in The Wolf Of Wall Street, and he arguably should have won the award for Best Supporting Actor, but being nominated is recognition enough for his hilarious take as Donny, Jordan Belfort’s waspy, absurd partner.

The comedic actor earned it, as he took the minimum possible salary of $60,000 just to work with Martin Scorsese, and he was even willing to swallow a real fish.
