10 Creepy Characters In Beloved Christmas Movies

Buddy the Elf, Yukon Cornelius, the Miser Brothers, and Cousin Eddie are just a handful of beloved characters who became the faces of iconic Christmas movies. So many lovable characters and creatures have warmed viewers’ hearts for decades that it’s practically impossible to avoid falling under the holiday spell.

With that all in mind, the Yin is not without the Yang, even when it comes to the holiday season. For every Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, there’s an Abominable Snow Monster waiting in the wings. Whether intentional or not, there are just some certain Christmas characters that have become completely creepy.

The Winter Warlock (Santa Claus Is Comin’ To Town)

The Winter Warlock might get away with a little wiggle room considering his transformation halfway through the film, but that doesn’t mean his icy wickedness isn’t nightmare fuel in the beginning. Especially one particular shot where lightning dances across his face.

From his pointed features to his shark-like teeth, his introduction was probably responsible for a legion of children’s nightmares when the special first premiered. Thankfully, his frigid exterior melts away with a simple act of kindness from the animated Kris Kringle himself.

Kubla Kraus (Jack Frost)

Loneliness and isolation will do strange things to a man. It might make him a tragic figure in need of companionship, but it also might make him into a terrifying Cossack King. Case in point, Kubla Kraus, who gives a new meaning to the term “making friends.”

Kubla has essentially run all of his Cossack buddies out of the castle, so he’s forced to make mechanical replacements. That could all be glossed over if his best friend wasn’t a mechanical ventriloquist dummy whom he talks to constantly. If this didn’t come from a Rankin/Bass production, he could be the subject of a Mike Flanagan film.

The Grinch (How The Grinch Stole Christmas)

Jim Carrey’s interpretation of the Grinch is legendary, and the ability to act so incredibly well underneath all that makeup and prosthetics is truly a testament to his talent. That all being said, the Grinch has his moments where he becomes creepier than many care to admit.

Carrey’s most recognizable feature is his ability to contort his face into a variety of over-the-top expressions, but some of those expressions can get a little too uncanny. Sometimes he’s Whoville’s resident curmudgeon, but sometimes his yellow-eyed stare can have a bit of a predatory look.

Santa (A Christmas Story)

In the mall Santa’s defense, anyone shot through a fish-eye lens immediately looks like they want to commit a mortal crime. Even so, while he probably doesn’t mean to be, the Santa in A Christmas Story puts out some extremely unnerving vibes. But then, so would lots of people at the end of a long shift as St. Nick.

It’s the distortion that makes this guy give most viewers a case of the willies, and it might do the job a little too well. Santa looks more like something out of a nightmare or a drunken hallucination rather than a jolly old elf. It’s no wonder Ralphie trips over his words.

Stripe (Gremlins)

While he’s not the only member of the legion of green ghouls that terrorize Kingston Falls in this classic monster movie, Stripe is definitely the most malicious. While the argument could be made that the rest of the gremlins are all acting out of chaotic criminal mischief rather than pure evil, the same can not be said for the leader of the gang.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Stripe is 100% bad, and he makes it well-known even before his transformation from Mogwai to Gremlin. Even just hearing that raspy voice come out of those freaky fangs is enough to make some shudder.

The Ghost of Christmas Past (The Muppet Christmas Carol)

For some reason, some things with the purest intention and design end up becoming exceedingly creepy with the passage of time. A great example of this is the Ghost of Christmas Past in The Muppet Christmas Carol. While it’s definitely not horrifying, there’s just something not right about this interpretation of the character.

Part of the reason some might take issue with this strange being is that it’s unclear exactly what it is or what it’s supposed to be. It might be a young girl, an angel, a cosmic being, or a fragmented doll come to life, but it’s that fear of the unknown that continues to rub some viewers the wrong way.

Uncle Drosselmeyer (Nutcracker: The Motion Picture)

10 Creepy Characters In Beloved Christmas Movies

The Nutcracker is a very hard source material to adapt accurately to film, but that doesn’t mean Hollywood didn’t try. Nutcracker: The Motion Picture is a strange and unusual adaptation of the famous ballet, but the creepiest part of the feature isn’t the three-headed rat king or the wild-eyed Nutcracker, it’s Drosselmeyer.

Drosselmeyer isn’t a bad guy in either the book or the ballet. In fact, he’s an integral part of the story. But the version presented here gives off some serious stranger-danger vibes that are more than a little unnerving, especially when he stares at different characters. It might not be the best idea to invite this weirdo to the family Christmas Party.

The Hobo (The Polar Express)

10 Creepy Characters In Beloved Christmas Movies

“Do you believe in ghosts?” The hobo who hitches a ride on the Polar Express is both the best character in the movie as well as the creepiest. Again, this is a character that plays with an element of ambiguity, using his unknowable and shifting nature to keep viewers guessing. While he does prove to be an ally, he does have some less-than-friendly moments.

This stranger on a train might be more of an eccentric guide than a ghastly ghost, and he’s not immune from providing a few scares, especially with that Scrooge puppet. But it’s his mix of light and dark that makes him so interesting and memorable.

Jacob Marley (A Christmas Carol)

10 Creepy Characters In Beloved Christmas Movies

While it would be easy to consider the perpetually decaying version seen in Robert Zemeckis’s Christmas Carol, the incarnation from the Oscar-winning short film by Chuck Jones is leagues more terrifying than his over-the-top successor. While his appearance is significantly shorter, his otherworldly form leaves a lasting impression.

Easily one of the scariest spirits with his soulless eyes and gaping mouth, Marley carries a very nightmarish quality to him, and his suffering is painted over him in graphic detail. He’ll keep more than Scrooge up at night, that’s for sure.

Christmas Future (Scrooged)

On one hand, the Ghost of Christmas Future is typically the same shrouded figure across the board in many different versions of A Christmas Carol, but not in this Richard Donner classic. The shroud is still there, but the creature underneath is something far more sinister than just a shadowy skeleton.

A chest full of demons and a TV monitor for a head are certainly fashion statements, and his presence alone is enough to chill the spines of anyone, regardless of their Scrooge-level. He’s definitely a prime candidate for the Scared Straight program.
