10 Genres That Have Been Underutilized By Star Wars

The Star Wars franchise largely plays into the samurai, western, and space opera genre with elements of science fiction sprinkled in. It’s quite a unique collection of themes to draw inspiration from, with specific projects like Rogue One or Solo boasting war or heist genres respectively.

As the universe continues to expand though, especially on Disney+, other genres are being used to their full extent, like animation. There are so many genres that are still underutilized which could certainly serve some kind of storytelling purpose and hopefully revitalize the franchise in a really unique manner.

Horror

The Star Wars Expanded Universe has explored some horror stories and indeed the animated shows have pulled elements of the genre into singular episodes. But there has yet to be a full-on horror film or ongoing show, despite all the potential the genre has for the franchise.

With the Sith and other monstrous beings out there in the universe, it’s not a long shot to see some ghostly tropes really pulled to the forefront. Echos of the past are common in Star Wars, so whether it’s a poltergeist-esque project or a lightsaber slasher, fans would definitely want to see if these heroes could survive a night of terror.

Fantasy

Of course, there are fantasy aspects to all of Star Wars. Indeed, many of the tropes of the saga can be found in normal fantasy fiction, such as the wise wizard, the young chosen one, and the forces of light and dark at battle. There’s so much more that can be done within the genre, though.

There could be a full-on fantasy epic that leans into the magic of the Force and investigates the mysteries of the Jedi Order or the shadows of Sith lore. Removing the blasters, battleships and Coruscant politics could open the way for a small-scale adventure deep within the fantastical tombs and temples of these two mighty organizations.

Espionage

There’s certainly potential for Andor to feature a number of espionage elements considering the character is a spy for the Republic. But until the show releases on Disney+, there aren’t many projects that feature the genre in the way that might be expected.

There’s a certain thriller-like tone that accompanies an espionage film, with the action becoming small scale but the narrative revelations forging a vital link to the rest of the galaxy. How did the spies of the Empire operate at the height of their power, for instance? That’s a great question to start with.

Found Footage

Found footage would work a little differently in the Star Wars universe considering most of the filming in the galaxy far far away is actually done through holograms. There’s something intriguing about the life of a regular citizen documenting the events unfolding around them.

There are multiple time periods that a found footage piece could really work for, but the rise of the Empire feels like a natural point of entry. Found footage of what happened to those who were invaded by the Stormtroopers would act as a stark reminder of the power of the Emperor’s fleet.

Mockumentary

A mockumentary is a great way to play into some of the meta-humor of a series. Considering Star Wars has avoided so many sci-fi tropes thus far, perhaps this kind of format would be an excellent way to make mention of that and expand the universe further.

A mockumentary chronicling the life of a Jedi or Sith warrior could be a lot of fun. Bounty hunters, smugglers, and even clone troopers could also be perfect subjects to follow for the genre, as the everyday lives of these characters are covered in a totally different way.

Disaster

Disaster movies usually involve the destruction of a planet and for Star Wars there’s no shortage of huge apocalypses. The Death Star and Starkiller Base have been two weapons of immense power that could inspire a disaster film. Did anyone escape their imminent destruction?

Disaster movies can also come in the form of monster invasions. There are a variety of huge beasts that roam the universe, including the likes of the Zillo Beast, a kaiju-like creature that could cause havoc, once more inspiring a totally different conceptual project for the franchise.

Zombie

Zombies do exist in Star Wars and can come in many forms, from a Geonosian worm to the possessive Dark Side. There are a lot of ways into the genre and fans would definitely love to see a zombie special, perhaps on Disney+ for Halloween.

How would these heroes cope with some of their own turning on them and what kind of damage would a zombie plague have on the wider galaxy? These are huge questions that a production within this genre could answer in an exciting change of pace for the series.

Comedy

There are comedic moments within all of the Star Wars films, although there aren’t quite as many jokes throughout the franchise in comparison to other major action blockbusters. Comedic characters are everywhere, though, so why not give them a spin-off project?

Creating a Star Wars adventure that is actually aiming to be a comedy, perhaps a buddy-cop type of flick, would definitely be intriguing for audiences. The fact is there’s no telling what a comedy film set within this property actually looks like. There is a lot to make fun of within the confines of the franchise and the Star Wars actors have proven their comedic talents time after time.

Martial Arts

The fighting within Star Wars is largely limited to lightsaber battles or blaster shootouts. Although types of physical combat do exist in the universe, they are rarely used because of these sci-fi weapons. What if Star Wars leaned into the martial arts genre?

There have been glimpses of how this could look, in Rogue One for instance. It would be a fun chance to develop new choreography about how people fight in this franchise without weapons. Do Force wielders utilize their abilities while mastering martial arts?

Sports

There are all kinds of sports within Star Wars, including podracing. While the pastime has become largely popular with the fanbase, there are other activities as well which might be great as a setup for a sports film, following the success or failure of a team.

Podracing is a natural concept for this as fans are familiar with how the sport works. Maybe this would be a chance to develop a new set of skills within Star Wars, which sees an athlete’s dreams come to fruition amidst the turmoil of the galaxy.
