Many A-list actors will sign on to star in a superhero movie, but sometimes the material fails the star, as it did with Catwoman and Suicide Squad.

10 Great Actors Whose Talents Were Wasted In Bad Comic Book Movies

Since comic book movies have become the most popular genre among the moviegoing public, it’s been easy for Hollywood studios to cast any actor they want — no matter how famous or revered they are — in the role of a superhero or supervillain. But it doesn’t matter how great an actor is if the movie they’re in is terrible.

Some of the greatest actors of all time have been squandered with thinly written parts in poorly made superhero blockbusters. For every three-dimensional role given to an actor like Robert Downey Jr., a dozen one-dimensional roles are given to A-listers in need of a new agent.

10 Oscar Isaac In X-Men: Apocalypse

While smaller movies like Ex Machina, Inside Llewyn Davis, and The Two Faces of January have solidified Oscar Isaac’s status as a gifted actor, he’s been massively squandered in big blockbusters like the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

The same goes for X-Men: Apocalypse, in which Isaac’s casting as one of Marvel’s most iconic villains seemed like a surefire bet. The movie’s thinly drawn script fails Apocalypse, and also fails Isaac as a result.

9 Josh Brolin In Jonah Hex

Josh Brolin would go on to make comic book movie icons out of Thanos in the Avengers movies and Cable in Deadpool 2, but he got shafted on his first foray into the genre.

In 2010, Jonah Hex came and went without making a splash. Critics despised it and it tanked at the box office. But in the same year Brolin starred in this trashy superhero western, he also appeared in the Coen brothers’ masterfully crafted revisionist western, True Grit.

8 Natalie Portman In Thor: The Dark World

10 Great Actors Whose Talents Were Wasted In Bad Comic Book Movies

Patty Jenkins stepped down as the director of Thor: The Dark World, because the script that Marvel wanted her to shoot was simply bad. Unfortunately, Natalie Portman wasn’t in a position to quit like Jenkins, because she was contractually obligated to return as Jane Foster. The studio had altered The Dark World’s script to include much more Loki, whose popularity skyrocketed after the release of The Avengers.

Increasing Loki’s role meant reducing Jane’s. In some scenes, she just sits silently in the background while Thor and Loki chit-chat. Portman is a first-rate actor who deserved so much more than this; no wonder she passed on the sequel.

7 J.K. Simmons In Justice League

Ever since his Oscar win for Whiplash, J.K. Simmons has been one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood. He somehow got roped into playing Commissioner Gordon in the DCEU’s Justice League, hopping aboard a sinking ship.

Jeffrey Wright has been cast to play Gordon in The Batman, and he’ll surely do a stellar job with the role, but it feels like Simmons got shortchanged.

6 Michael B. Jordan In Fant4stic

Josh Trank’s weirdly body horror-influenced vision for a Fantastic Four movie got butchered into a generic, by-the-numbers blockbuster by Fox executives with cold feet. Amid this flurry of studio meddling lies four terrific actors getting forced into reshoot upon reshoot. The one that stands out the most is Michael B. Jordan, one of the finest actors in the world, reduced to a one-note stock character.

Fortunately, Jordan would be given a comic book role worthy of his talents a couple of years later when his regular collaborator Ryan Coogler cast him to play Killmonger in Black Panther, where he was hailed as one of the greatest movie supervillains of all time.

5 Alicia Silverstone In Batman & Robin

George Clooney and Joel Schumacher have repeatedly apologized to moviegoers for Batman & Robin. It’s a certifiably awful movie that gets just about everything wrong. The casting of Clueless star Alicia Silverstone in the role of Batgirl was an exciting prospect. With the right script, she could’ve made for a fantastic Barbara Gordon.

Unfortunately, she had the wrong script. The character wasn’t even called Barbara Gordon; she was called Barbara Wilson, as she was changed to be Alfred’s niece.

4 David Harbour In Hellboy (2019)

10 Great Actors Whose Talents Were Wasted In Bad Comic Book Movies

After years of playing minor character-actor parts, David Harbour finally started getting the recognition he deserved with the major role of Jim Hopper in Netflix’s Stranger Things. With any luck, he’ll have a great part in Black Widow, too.

But when he was cast to replace Ron Perlman in the R-rated Hellboy reboot, his career took a few steps back. The comedic lines he was given were cringeworthy, while the movie itself is a complete mess.

3 Will Smith In Suicide Squad

Will Smith will get another chance to play a complex incarnation of Deadshot in a future DC movie, as Idris Elba was given a different role in The Suicide Squad to specifically allow for it, but as it stands, the first Suicide Squad movie underutilized Smith.

The core conflict of Deadshot is that he’s an assassin who also wants to do right by his daughter, but the story didn’t do anything with this. The audience is simply told his backstory and then Smith is given nothing to do with his emotional range for the rest of the movie.

2 Jamie Foxx In The Amazing Spider-Man 2

The breadth of Jamie Foxx’s talent is unfathomable. He’s a great actor, a great musician, a great comedian — everything he touches turns to gold. His performances in Ray and Django Unchained have more than proven him to be one of the best actors working today, but he was squandered in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 with the one-dimensional characterization of Electro as a weird loner.

It was recently announced that Jamie Foxx will reprise his role from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 in the MCU’s next Spidey movie, so there’s a chance he’ll finally get a role that’s worth his abilities.

1 Halle Berry In Catwoman

Although it began development as a Batman Returns spin-off starring Michelle Pfeiffer, 2004’s Catwoman has almost no connection to the iconic femme fatale it’s named after. She has a new name, a new origin story, and a new personality.

Widely regarded to be one of the worst movies ever made, Catwoman wasn’t worth the immense talents of its lead actor, Halle Berry, who previously proved she can play an awesome superhero as Storm in the X-Men movies.
