On January 19, 2021, Forbes reported that Netflix’s new original French action-crime series Lupin is on pace to be viewed by more than 70 million households in the first 28 days on the streaming service. If those figures are accurate, the show will shatter the record previously held by runaway hit shows Bridgereton and The Queen’s Gambit.
Debuting on January 8, 2021, Lupin is a two-part comedic caper series based on the legend of Arsene Lupin, the fictional thief created in 1905 by French author Maurice Leblanc. Until Part 2 of the series is made available on Netflix later this year, there are some other international heist-thrillers to keep you company.
10 The Italian Job (1969)
Remade with stylish flair in 2003 by director F. Gary Gray, the original Italian Job starring Michael Caine is the perfect place for fans of Lupin to start out. The film is fast, fun, and full of witty humor much like Lupin is.
Fresh out of jail, Charlie (Caine) accepts his friend’s daring mission to pull a heist in front of the Italian mob in Turin, Italy. Charlie’s plot includes manufacturing a massive traffic jam in order to steal a giant shipment of gold bullion from the mafia and escape unscathed.
9 The Thomas Crown Affair (1968)
While the 1999 remake is a passable substitution, Lupin fans ought to watch the original 1968 version of The Thomas Crown Affair. The great Steve McQueen stars as a cocksure bank executive who pulls of a brazen multi-million dollar heist and spends the rest of his days enjoying the perks.
Directed by Norman Jewison with arresting visual panache, Thomas Crown’s (McQueen) lavish lifestyle comes crashing to a halt when falling in love with the insurance investigator Vicki Anderson (Faye Dunaway) assigned to the case.
8 Snatch (2000)
For another hilarious European heist film centered on the theft of a priceless diamond, look no further than Guy Ritchie’s slick sophomore feature, Snatch.
The plot revolves around a group of unsavory characters in England’s criminal underworld all conspiring to find a missing diamond, which happens to sit in the belly of a cute little pooch who swallowed the gem. As the bumbling criminals confront one another over the diamond, massive bloodshed ensues.
7 Out Of Sight (1998)
Based on the Elmore Leonard novel of the same name, Steven Soderbergh’s star-studded heist-thriller Out of Sight is more about the quirky characterizations than the crime itself. Even so, it’s still one of the all-time best films of its ilk.
Jack Foley (George Clooney) is a bank robber fresh out of prison. After botching a heist that lands him back in jail, Foley meets several criminal accomplices who inform him of a priceless trove of uncut diamonds in Detroit. Jack assembles a crew and gets to work, only to fall in love with a sexy ATF agent named Karen Sisco (Jennifer Lopez).
6 Reservoir Dogs (1992)
Quentin Tarantino’s blistering feature debut Reservoir Dogs is a heist film in which the audience is never shown the heist. Instead, the paranoid aftermath of the botched crime is shown from various survivors, all of whom are strangers named after different a color.
Halfway through the nonlinear film, Tarantino reveals who among the thieves is an undercover cop working the case from the inside. The film borrows from several heist thrillers of yore, including Ring of Fire and The Taking Of Pelham One Two Three.
5 The Taking Of Pelham One Two Three (1974)
Indeed, Joseph Sargent’s superb heist-thriller The Taking of Pelham One Two Three also features a gaggle of strangers who address one another by a different color as they plot a daring heist of a subway car. The film was remade by Tony Scott in 2009.
When Mr. Brown, Mr. Green, Mr. Blue, and Mr. Grey all board the Pelham train at different stops, the other passengers do not suspect their mission to hold the other hostage until a million-dollar ransom payment is made. Studded with offbeat humor, the case is left up to Lt. Garber (Walter Matthau) to solve.
4 Rififi (1955)
Currently rated #236 on IMDB’s Top 250, Jules Dassin’s Rififi is one of the best and most influential heist-thrillers ever made. Based on the Auguste Le Breton novel, the film finds a foursome of thieves who plot a perfectly sound crime but fall victim to human folly.
When a quartet of skilled criminals combine to crack a safe and pilfer a pair of diamonds, everything goes well until it comes time to divide the loot. With each man harboring his own plan for their share of the money, they fight, bicker, and lose their cool under pressure.
3 The Killing (1956)
Stanley Kubrick’s The Killing is often hailed as one of the most trailblazing and definitive heist-thrillers of all time. The film traces a collection of thieves who agree to rob $2 million from a racetrack during a high-stakes horse race.
Much like Reservoir Dogs, the film adheres to a nonlinear narrative that jumps back and forth in time, marking one of the first films to use the technique. After Johnny Clay (Sterling Hayden) and his men pull off the heist, they cannot agree on how to divide the money, what to spend it on, and what to do in the meantime.
2 Bob Le Flambeur (1956)
Fans of Lupin are sure to enjoy Bob Le Flambeur, perhaps the most famous French heist-thriller outside of Le Doulos or Le Cercle Rouge, all of which are directed by Jean-Pierre Melville.
In a film that inspired the original Ocean’s 11, Bob Le Flambeur traces the criminal exploits of Robert Montagne, an old-school thief who rounds up a crew to rob a French casino after suffering a massive financial loss. With an ironclad plan in place, a tip-off to the police threatens to undermine Bob’s grand scheme.
1 The Asphalt Jungle (1950)
John Huston’s landmark movie The Asphalt Jungle inspired the rest of this list in some form or fashion. Without its existence, the others could very well cease to be.
Based on the W.R. Burnett novel, the film concerns a jewel heist along the river in an unnamed city in the midwest. Doc Erwin (Sam Jaffe) is released from a seven-year prison stint and recruits a team of like-minded cons to pull off the heist, but every part of the plan falls apart while performing the mission. The film was nominated for four Oscars, including Best Director.
