Disney+ is a decent reflection of Disney through the decades: ever-changing, imperfect, and always trying to capture magic in some way. The streaming service is a mixed bag of Disney properties, Disney Channel shows, and limited (but enjoyable) originals.

One of the best perks of subscribing to Disney+ is getting a vault of rare media. Movies that viewers once had to rent or purchase on VHS, then DVD, then Blu-ray, are readily available with just a few clicks. Subscribers can feel overwhelmed by the amount of content, so it is always helpful to know about some of the hidden gems within the minefield.

10 The Rookie (2002)

There were some great Disney live-action films in the ’90s and 2000s that aren’t often talked about these days. One of those is The Rookie (2002), starring Dennis Quaid. Quaid plays a high school baseball coach named Jim Morris whose team keeps on losing. Jim makes a bet with the high school team that he will try out for the Major League if the team can win, and they make it happen. The movie was based on the book The Oldest Rookie by the real Jim Morris.

While You Were Sleeping is a go-to romantic comedy for many viewers, and some had no idea that it is on Disney+. Sandra Bullock plays a subway worker named Lucy who falls in love with a businessman named Peter and saves his life on the tracks. Lucy masquerades as Peter’s fiancée but starts spending more time with Peter’s brother, Jack. Lucy and Jack fall in love as she continues to live out her act until it all unravels and choices must be made.

Disney’s The Kid is a somewhat forgotten feature film about a man named Russ Duritz (Bruce Willis) who must come to terms with how his past made him who he is. The career-obsessed Russ is an image consultant, which means that his job is to help a person become someone they’re not in order to better brand themselves. Russ comes face to face with the child version of himself, Rusty (Spencer Breslin). Rusty is literally a product of the past, and Russ learns to love people by loving himself again.

7 Hello, Dolly! (1969)

There definitely needs to be more Disney movie musicals. The genre is totally on-brand for Disney, even if it means that they have to pay to acquire musicals within other companies. Hello, Dolly! is an excellent example, and children and adults can enjoy it at the same time. The Broadway success was captured on film in 1969 with Barbra Streisand in the titular role of Dolly. Turn-of-the-century New York has never been more vibrant and melodious.

6 Horse Sense (1999)

Horse Sense is the hidden gem of Disney Channel Original Movies. The DCOM is a 1999 classic starring Joey and Andy Lawrence as Michael and Tommy, two cousins who live totally opposite lifestyles.

Michael is an overgrown Beverly Hills brat, and Tommy is a hard-working ranch kid from Montana. When these two spend time together over the summer, it’s the heartfelt dose of family fun that everyone needs.

5 Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993)

Homeward Bound is actually a remake of a 1960s film, but the ’90s version is meaningful to a whole generation of kids (now adults) and their families. The uplifting Disney adventure is frightening at times but keeps every viewer on the edge of their seat. Subscribers can watch the 1993 journey through the Sierra Nevada and then enjoy the 1996 sequel, Lost in San Francisco. 1963’s The Incredible Journey is even available!

4 The Boys: The Sherman Brothers’ Story (2009)

Robert B. Sherman and Richard M. Sherman made so many Disney classics what they are. The Sherman Brothers’ work is celebrated in The Boys: The Sherman Brothers’ Story. The quality Disney documentary (originally released in 2009) goes through the Brothers’ work on classics like The Jungle Book and Mary Poppins and shows how they began working with Walt to make each movie sing.

3 Life With Mikey (1993)

Life with Mikey introduces Christina Vidal as Angie Vega, a little girl who has dealt with a challenging home life. Michael J. Fox is Michael “Mikey” Chapman, a talent agent who was once a celebrated child actor. Chapman is taken with Angie’s raw talent and signs her to the withering agency he runs with his brother. The child becomes the face of a cookie company in its commercials.

Angie and Michael both learn some important lessons about hard work and family, and the movie is one that everyone can enjoy together.

Don Hahn’s 2018 documentary arrived in August of 2020, and every Disney fan needs to watch it.
