10 Iconic Wes Anderson Characters Ranked By Likability

While Wes Anderson’s movies are sometimes accused of favoring style over substance, his work and the characters that populate it have plenty of humanity and emotional depth. Not all of Anderson’s characters are likable, though. In fact, very few of them are 100% likable. Underneath all the quirky charm, these characters are real people with relatable problems and endearing flaws.

In some cases, unlikable characters can be a lot more compelling — or, in the case of a comedy, funnier — than cut-and-dried likable Hollywood archetypes. These are some of the most memorable characters from Anderson’s filmography, ranked by how likable they are.

10 Royal Tenenbaum (The Royal Tenenbaums)

10 Iconic Wes Anderson Characters Ranked By Likability

The estranged patriarch of the Tenenbaum clan, played brilliantly by Gene Hackman, spends the runtime of The Royal Tenenbaums seeking redemption for a lifetime of terrible fatherhood.

He sort of makes up for it in the connection he makes with his grandsons Ari and Uzi. He takes them out for a day of reckless fun away from their grieving, safety-conscious dad — and eventually saves the boys’ lives when Eli crashes his car into the house.

9 Peter Whitman (The Darjeeling Limited)

10 Iconic Wes Anderson Characters Ranked By Likability

Out of the three brothers trying to reconnect in The Darjeeling Limited, Peter is the least likable. Hysterically dry delivery by Adrien Brody covers up the character’s blatant flaws, like his extreme selfishness.

He traveled to India without telling his pregnant wife and he’s not even sure he loves her. He’s humanized by a couple of harrowing experiences throughout the film, like failing to save a child’s life in the river.

8 Max Fischer (Rushmore)

10 Iconic Wes Anderson Characters Ranked By Likability

Max Fischer, the precocious 15-year-old playwright in Rushmore, is deliberately unlikable for comedic effect. Throughout the movie, Jason Schwartzman hilariously plays into Max’s worst qualities.

Whether he’s vindictively shunning Miss Cross’ date Peter from his dinner party after having a drink or delivering insults like, “Your mind’s as warped as your ear, Buchan,” Max is a hysterical character but hardly likable.

7 Suzy Bishop (Moonrise Kingdom)

10 Iconic Wes Anderson Characters Ranked By Likability

Suzy Bishop, one half of the couple that runs away to be together in Moonrise Kingdom, is short-tempered in her interactions with other kids and she’s quick to resort to violence — even in class.

Her love for Sam makes her endearing, but she’s a problem child for her parents, who already have enough problems with their fading marriage. Suzy finds a book of theirs called Coping with the Very Troubled Child.

6 Steve Zissou (The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou)

10 Iconic Wes Anderson Characters Ranked By Likability

Inspired by Jacques Cousteau, the titular protagonist in The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is a famous oceanographer. He’s a classically goofy Bill Murray character with a healthy dose of Anderson quirk who galvanizes Team Zissou in their quest to find the jaguar shark. Along the way, he triumphantly saves his crew from a pirate attack.

When Ned Plimpton, who believes he’s Steve’s long-lost son, gets in touch with him, he initially pushes him away. But, over the course of the movie, Steve learns to embrace Ned, regardless of whether he’s his biological offspring.

5 Ash Fox (Fantastic Mr. Fox)

10 Iconic Wes Anderson Characters Ranked By Likability

Mr. Fox’s son Ash, voiced by Jason Schwartzman, is desperate to prove himself to his dad and be included in the crew. He’s jealous of Kristofferson’s natural ability, which Mr. Fox recognizes instantly. Mr. Fox gives Kristofferson his own balaclava while Ash has to fashion his mask out of a tube sock.

Ash always makes things worse with his ill-fated attempts to win people over, which makes him sympathetic. He ultimately proves himself to be heroic in the final showdown when he bravely marches through the farmers’ gunfire and sets the rabid dog on Boggis, Bunce, and Bean.

4 M. Gustave (The Grand Budapest Hotel)

10 Iconic Wes Anderson Characters Ranked By Likability

Thanks to Ralph Fiennes’ intoxicating performance, The Grand Budapest Hotel’s M. Gustave is one of the most memorable characters in film history. He’s hilariously campy, but with plenty of Fiennes’ signature pathos.

Gustave steals a painting (Boy with Apple), but it does rightfully belong to him per Madame D.’s last will and testament — it’s just that her scorned family disagrees with her decision to give it to him, so he has to take it. Gustave always admits when he makes a mistake, like if he says something insensitive to Zero in the heat of the moment, and apologizes profusely for it.

3 Captain Sharp (Moonrise Kingdom)

10 Iconic Wes Anderson Characters Ranked By Likability

Initially, Captain Sharp’s role in Moonrise Kingdom is mounting the search for Sam and Suzy when they run away to be together. Played by Bruce Willis, Sharp eventually becomes endeared to Sam and recognizes that he’s a good kid who’s just misunderstood.

When Sam’s foster parents decide to cut him loose, citing running away from Khaki Scout camp as the final straw, Captain Sharp adopts him to save him from being sent to an orphanage.

2 Dignan (Bottle Rocket)

10 Iconic Wes Anderson Characters Ranked By Likability

Dignan is a wannabe career criminal who steals shamelessly, but his ineptness is sweet. He’s hellbent on going on a crime spree, but despite his careful planning, he’s completely unprepared for the life of a professional criminal. He occasionally snaps at his friends, but like Gustave, he’s quick to apologize for it.

He takes the heat when the final heist goes south to allow his friends to escape, and then lies to the cops to protect them. He’s ultimately a good guy who’s loyal to his buddies.

1 Dirk Calloway (Rushmore)

Max Fischer’s chapel buddy Dirk Calloway is a sweet, innocent kid who always watches out for his friends and is wise beyond his years. After Blume betrays Max, Dirk tells him, “With friends like you, who needs friends?”

When he hears that Max has been spreading rumors about his mom, Dirk is initially angry at him, but later swings by Max’s dad’s barbershop to be the bigger man and forgive him.
