Christmas time is all about getting together with family and enjoying those moments that warm the heart. One of the best ways to do it is to gather everyone around the television set for a movie or two while the snow falls, and the fire crackles away. For the best experience, it pays to have a list of films on hand that are sure to fit the bill.

The following is a list of live-action Christmas-themed or appropriate films. Each one has a different story to tell, but they all eventually circle back to the timeless themes of family, friendship, and the spirit of the holidays.

10 Home Alone (1990)

It’s hard to beat the staying power of Home Alone when it comes to Christmas movies. It’s right up there with the classics of old thanks to its slapstick comedy, juvenile behavior, and a family-centric theme that still brings joy thirty years later.

When young Kevin is inadvertently left at home when his family scrambles through the madness of the Christmas vacation season, he takes the opportunity to live it up and be King of his own castle. However, the house becomes the target of two dimwitted robbers known as the Wet Bandits, forcing Kevin to devise some creative (and painful) problem-solving to get rid of them.

9 It’s A Wonderful Life (1946)

One of the best tales ever told, It’s A Wonderful Life is perfect for the Christmas season given its serious but uplifting subject matter. The story revolves around George Bailey, a man who dedicated his life to helping his community at the cost of his own dreams and aspirations.

When he falls on hard times, George contemplates suicide, believing his friends and loved ones would be better off. To turn him back from the precipice, his guardian angel Clarence reveals how his community would have turned out if George didn’t care so much about it. It’s a beautiful story designed to uplift all viewers regardless of their stature in life.

8 Jack Frost (1998)

Michael Keaton starred in this film about a musician and father who spends so much time on the road that he cannot bond properly with his young son Charlie. When Jack dies in a car accident, he returns in the form of a snowman which gives him the chance to reconnect with his devastated son.

The two re-forge their bond after so much neglect, giving Jack one last chance to make things right before the warm weather moves in and threatens to end their connection for good. Equal parts uplifting and tear-jerking, this is one Christmas film with a message.

7 The Santa Clause (1994)

Comedian and actor-extraordinaire Tim Allen stars in this hilarious family romp about a guy who ends up taking up the duties of Saint Nick himself. Allen plays Scott Calvin, a divorced father who is distraught to learn that his ex-wife has told their son that Santa Claus doesn’t exist.

One night, he causes what appears to be Santa to fall from his roof. Scott is left with a sleigh, a suit, and instructions which end up taking him on a wild ride all the way to the North Pole. There, he discovers that he’s become the new Santa, much to his chagrin.

6 Miracle On 34th Street (1947)

The original 1947 of Miracle on 34th Street has a timeless charm that makes the modern world drop away in favor of something far more ideal. It’s the wonderful story of Kris Kringle, a guy who claims he’s the real Santa Claus.

This brings his mental health into serious doubt, and he’s soon brought before a court to determine if he’s well, and if he is the genuine article. In his corner is a young lawyer who decides to act as his defense and argue that he’s definitely the real thing. It’s worth watching just for the warm feelings, alone.

5 A Christmas Story (1983)

This classic Christmas film is arguably the perfect holiday story, thanks in large part to catchphrases and quotes that have become part of pop culture. It’s the tale of young Ralphie, a 1940s kid who wants nothing else for Christmas except a Red Ryder BB gun.

His hopes are dashed when his mother, teacher, and even Santa Claus himself put the brakes on the idea. With time running out, Ralphie begins to worry that it may be his worst Christmas ever. Will he shoot his eye out? Watch and see.

4 Jingle All The Way (1996)

Arnold Schwarzenegger dived back into comedy films after a string of action hits in the 1990s with Jingle All The Way. It’s the madcap story of a busy father who wants nothing more than to get his son the one thing he wants most for Christmas – a coveted Turbo-Man figure.

Easier said than done, however. Turbo-Men fly off the shelves in moments, forcing him to run all over town in frantic search while making backroom deals with nefarious scalpers. If that weren’t enough, he’s forced to contend with a rival father after the exact same thing.

3 Ernest Saves Christmas (1988)

Dimwitted but kind-hearted Ernest spreads a little Christmas cheer by giving Santa Claus a ride in his taxi for free. This act of kindness ends up getting him fired from his job, however, and Ernest is left with nothing but Santa’s sack in his cab.

He soon discovers that the sack is magical, and that his passenger was indeed tapped to become the real Santa Claus. With time running out before the magic does, Ernest must reunite the sack with Santa in order to save Christmas.

2 Scrooged (1988)

Many fans overlook this underrated take on the classic story of Ebenezer Scrooge, and that’s a shame. Funnyman Bill Murray plays Francis Cross, a mean-spirited big-shot television executive with a disposition cruel enough to fire one of his staff on Christmas Eve.

Cross is paid a visit by the three ghosts of Christmas past, present and future in order to try and turn him away from his cynical and wicked ways, but have they bitten off more than they can chew? There’s a healthy dose of black comedy thrown into the mix that makes this film stand out from others on this list.

1 Babes In Toyland (1986)

The lovable and iconic Drew Barrymore starred in this classic television musical about Lisa, an 11-year-old girl going on 40 thanks to a hectic family life that has put her in charge of her siblings. With no time to herself to just be a kid, Lisa is given a chance when she’s transported the mystical Toyland on Christmas Eve.

Once there, she must learn to believe in the powers of being a kid if she’s to stop the wicked Barnaby Barnacle from seizing control of Toyland. Barrymore is joined by an eclectic cast including Richard Mulligan, Pat Morita, and Keanu Reeves in one of his earliest non-action performances.
