The Avengers are Marvel’s banner group, without a doubt. The MCU’s success turned them into instant superstars, surpassing the X-Men, who were Marvel’s leading crowd for years. Indeed, these two are the comic book giant’s most famous and beloved groups, but they’re not the only ones.
In fact, there are several superhero alliances in the comics that are yet to debut in the MCU. Some are more famous than others, both within the comic book’s continuity and with fans, but they are all part of the intricate fabric that makes up the Marvel universe.
10 The Lady Liberators
The Enchantress was behind the Lady Liberators’ formation. Disguised as Valkyrie, the villainess manipulated Black Widow, Wasp, Scarlet Witch, and Madame Medusa, forming a deadly all-female alliance. The Lady Liberators faced off against the Avengers, defeating them. Enchantress then tried to kill her fellow allies, but the Scarlet Witch counteracted her magic, seemingly killing her.
The group returned years later after She-Hulk suffered a brutal defeat at the hands of Red Hulk. Joined by Valkyrie, Thundra, Maria Hill, Hellcat, Storm, Spider-Woman, the Invisible Woman, and Black Widow, the team defeated the Red Hulk. The Lady Liberators might work in the MCU, especially now that every movie seems to include a mini team-up.
9 The Champions Of Los Angeles
Even though it debuted with much fanfare, the Champions of Los Angeles didn’t last long. It’s a shame, because it was one of Marvel’s most eclectic and chaotic gathering of heroes. Angel, one of the X-Men’s original members, was the driving force behind the team, acting as the team’s founder, financier, and administrator. The line-up also included fellow mutant Iceman, Black Widow, Ghost Rider, and the Olympian God Hercules.
The Champions were always a ticking time-bomb. Internal conflicts, including the team’s rejection of Ghost Rider and the impulsiveness of loose cannon Hercules, led to the team’s disbandment. The Champions still remain one of Marvel’s most intriguing concepts though. The MCU could them justice, exploiting their chaotic dynamic to create something truly original. Joining these four characters with nothing in common would be the ultimate experiment, and their unique set of abilities make them an impressive challenge.
8 The Winter Guard
Out of all Marvel teams, the Winter Guard is one of the most complex. They represent and fight for Russia’s interests around the globe, meaning they often act as heroes and villains, at least in the eyes of the US. They are a group of anti-heroes in every sense of the word and would add a layer of complexity to the otherwise clean-cut MCU. The Winter Guard’s most famous line-up included leader Red Guardian, Darkstar, Crimson Dynamo, and Ursa Major.
Throughout Marvel history, the Winter Guard has fought beside and against the Avengers and the X-Men. They played a prominent role in the famous Secret Invasion storyline, helping War Machine fight off the Skrull invasion of Russia. Many fans wonder where Red Guardian will appear next in the MCU, and the Winter Guard would be an ideal place for him. Yelena Belova could also show up, and once the mutants debut, even Ursa Major.
7 Alpha Flight
Alpha Flight is a government-sponsored team and the sworn protectors of Canada. Many heroes have gone through Alpha Flight’s ranks over the years, including Ghost Girl, Vindicator, and the ridiculously named superhero Major Mapleleaf. Even Wolverine was a member for a while, and the team plays a prominent role in his backstory.
Alpha Flight often acts as support characters during storylines. Still, the team has been around for decades now, and it’s time they get their time in the spotlight. Members like Shaman and Guardian and villains like the Great Beasts and Dreamqueen would make excellent additions to the MCU canon.
6 Excalibur
According to Marvel itself, “other teams are founded, but Excalibur was forged.” Depicted as an offshoot of the X-Men based in the United Kingdom, Excalibur debuted in 1985. British hero Captain Britain, his lover Meggan, and the former X-Men Nightcrawler, Shadowcat, and Rachel Summers were the team’s first members. Over the years, they would welcome recruits, including Moira MacTaggert, Colussus, and Black Knight.
Excalibur blends magical and sci-fi elements, further distinguishing them from other Marvel teams. For example, Captain Britain received his powers from Merlin himself, and Black Knight also has connections to the Arthurian Legend. This element of mysticism would be most welcome in the MCU, and so would Excalibur. They’re a prominent team in the comics, and it’s time they get their due on the big screen.
5 The Marvel Knights
One of the best parts of having an interconnected universe is that characters can form casual alliances, relying on each other when needed. The Marvel Knights first assembled when Daredevil and his former lover Natasha Romanoff joined forces to investigate a massacre of Red Mafia members in NYC. Joined by Punisher, Dagger, and classic Marvel Comics superhero Shang-Chi, the group fought Ulik the Asgardian Troll. Disapproving of Punisher’s methods, the other four joined Moon Knight to bring the vigilante to justice.
The Marvel Knights came together through chance and circumstance. They never battled an intergalactic threat or a world-threatening enemy. However, they are the perfect example of the organic alliances that would happen in a superhero world. Even if they feel “small-scale,” the Marvel Knights would be the ideal way for the MCU to use heroes like Daredevil, Shang-Chi, and Moon Knight whenever they’re not avenging.
4 The Defenders
The validity of the Marvel-Netflix universe remains dubious. Still, the Defenders line-up they introduced had little to do with the comics’ team of the same name. The Defenders, the most famous non-team in comics, welcomes characters known for following their own agendas. Its original incarnation, led by Doctor Strange, also included the Hulk, Namor, and Silver Surfer.
The very idea of seeing those four characters together in live-action is exciting enough. However, the Defenders play a prominent role in comics, battling mystic and supernatural threats. Over the years, the team fought Dormammu, Xemnu the Titan, Null the Living Darkness, and the Undying Ones. Such eclectic names are proof enough that the Defenders’ foes are in a league of their own and would add a bizarre but electrifying layer to the MCU.
3 The X-Men
The X-Men are one of the best creations from the Silver Age of comic books. They are one of the pillars upon which Marvel stands, and it’s their most thematically complex title by far. Throughout the decades, the group has starred in some of the most memorable and acclaimed storylines in comic books–The Dark Phoenix Saga, Days of Future Past, God Loves, Man Kills. They are an institution in Marvel and crucial to the company’s success.
It’s only a matter of time before they debut in the MCU. Whether they appear in the upcoming Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness or later, mutants will eventually return to the silver screen, and fans will lose their minds.
2 The Fantastic Four
When it comes to cinematic adaptations, Marvel’s first family has the worst luck. The first two Fantastic Four movies were too campy and disposable, while the 2015 reboot is one of the worst superhero movies ever. It’s a shame, because the Fantastic Four are iconic Silver Age creations and some of Marvel’s most defining characters.
The Fantastic Four are so distinctive because of their erratic and relatable relationship. They are a family in every sense of the word. They fight, hold grudges, break up and reconcile, and still sit together at dinner to talk about their day. The team introduced a unique dynamic to comic books that would be most welcome in the MCU. Like the X-Men, the Fantastic Four will return to the big screen sooner rather than later, and fans can’t wait to see the MCU’s take on this iconic family.
1 A-Force
Avengers: Endgame gave audiences a tease of what A-Force would look like in the MCU. Reaction to the scene was divisive, but the backlash had more to do with the execution, not the idea. In the comics, A-Force debuted during Secret Wars and included nearly every female hero in Marvel continuity. Afterward, the team’s line-up consisted of Captain Marvel, Medusa, Singularity, Nico Minoru, Dazzler, and Dazzler Thor, led by She-Hulk.
The MCU has several possible candidates for an A-Force team. Furthermore, the idea is a perfect way to showcase these characters, and no one can resist seeing characters like Scarlet Witch working alongside Gamora or Valkyrie.
