10 Most Impactful Titan Transformations in Attack On Titan, Ranked

Titan transformations have led to some of the biggest moments within the anime Attack on Titan. Here are the most impactful.

One of the most exciting parts of Attack on Titan is the titan transformation when the shifter is immersed in a flash of thunder and lightning (or at least seemingly) and emerges over 15 meters tall with powers surpassing any mere human. Throughout the series, there are nine revolving titan powers and shifters each with its own unique style and appearance.

Of these many transformations, not all influenced the series’ plotlines or its main characters equally. Who were the titan shifters that had the most significant impact on Attack on Titan and just what might have been sacrificed in the process?

10 Battle Against the Beast Titan

In a decisive battle to reclaim Wall Maria and finally get to Grisha’s basement where the mysteries behind the titans seemingly await, the scouts battle the Beast Titan for the first time. Appearing with its own horde of pure titans and pinning the scouts between two titan shifters, the Beast Titan forces Erwin to make unconscionable decisions to protect Eren and humanity.

The Beast Titan wipes out nearly all of the scouts, including Commander Erwin. The death toll changes the future of the scouts and their leadership dramatically as Hange assumes the mantle. And Levi is burdened by his failure to keep his promise to Erwin, which scars him (literally) every time he reunites with Zeke.

Who knew one touch from Zeke (or his spinal fluid) could be so fatal?

9 Eren Plugs Wall Rose

With his newfound abilities and the knowledge that intelligent titans are likely humans, Eren must prove his usefulness to humanity. After Armin formulates the plan for Eren to use a massive rock to plug the hole in Wall Rose, Commander Pixis puts the entire military’s manpower behind Eren to support the operation.

While not without severe casualties for the Eldians, the plan succeeds signifying the first time Eren controls the Attack Titan successfully. Furthermore, it is the beginning of humanity’s countermeasure against the titans and Eren as the last hope of humanity within the walls.

8 Eren’s First Transformation

Trapped inside a titan’s belly and bleeding to death, Eren grasps life and emerges as the Attack Titan. Despite a lack of control of the abilities, his Attack Titan is singularly focused on destroying other titans, which saves the scouts and inhabitants of Wall Rose.

Eren’s reveal as a titan is both a surprise to him and his fellow scouts. His transformation alerts the Marleyan infiltrators Reiner and Bertholdt to the location of the Attack and Founding Titans. But it also creates much doubt and speculation amongst the inhabitants of the walls and the military leaders who must decide if Eren is an ally or a threat.

7 Reveal of Armored and Colossal Titans

While not a surprise to the other scouts alongside him, Eren was devastated by the truth of Reiner and Bertholdt. How could his allies and fellow training cadets of the last five years have betrayed him?

This reveal sends Eren into deep despair after he is not only defeated by the Marleyan invaders but also hordes of scout members die yet again to retrieve Eren. The mix of depression and responsibility eventually leads Eren to discover his founding titan power and save the day.

After Eren escapes from Reiner and Bertholdt, he is never defeated in a battle while in titan form again.

6 Reveal of the Female Titan

After the Female Titan fails to capture Eren in the Forest of Giant Trees, its actions give Armin significant clues about the user’s identity. Sure enough, Armin reveals Annie to be the Female Titan after she refuses to go into the underground tunnel.

Due to Annie’s transformation, Erwin and Armin also deduce that Reiner and Bertholdt are likely the Armor and Colossal Titans given their relationship to Annie. Also, due to Eren’s destructive battle against Annie, it is revealed that there are colossal titans within the walls and that the Church of Walls’ religious leaders contain secrets about the titans.

After Annie is captured, the Scouts’ leadership has serious questions and doubts about the upper echelon of the military and religious orders.

5 Armin’s Colossal Titan

After eating Bertholdt, Armin’s Colossal Titan is used to destroy incoming Marleyan fleets to the Island of Paradis. Over the years, this allows the scouts to protect Paradis, capture hostages, and uncover key information about Marleyan technology, titan secrets, and more.

To his dismay, Armin’s shining titan transformation happens during Eren’s battle with the Warhammer Titan. While the Marley military believes to have Eren and the scouts cornered due to their vast naval capacity, they did not anticipate Armin destroying the entire Marley navy and port.

This not only leaves Marley unable to chase the scouts after they escape Marley but also cripples the Marley counterattack for several months.

4 Eren Kruger as The Owl

The initial namesake for Attack on Titan’s chief protagonist, Eren Kruger was a spy known as “The Owl” who infiltrated the Marleyan military to disclose their secrets to the Eldian rebel group known as the “Restorationists.” While Grisha and the Restorationists would be discovered and put to death by Marley, Eren Kruger intervened transforming into the Attack Titan to both save Grisha and transfer the titan power.

Grisha’s inheritance of the Attack Titan and Kruger’s intel enables him to infiltrate Paradis and reclaim the Founding Titan. Without Eren Kruger, there never would have been an Eren Yeager.

3 Grisha and the Reiss Family

A major catalyst for the entire Eren Yeager plot is when his father Grisha Yeager uses the Attack Titan to massacre the Reiss children and steal the founding titan. The founding titan had been passed down within the Reiss family for countless generations since the original king made a binding vow renouncing war with Marley.

When Grisha steals the founding titan, he changes the entire timeline of Eldians and creates an opportunity for the rumbling to be used to oppose the Marley military forces and end the Eldian oppression. Additionally, the murder of the Reiss children allows Historia, the illegitimate daughter of Rod Reiss, to become the Queen.

2 Eren Declares War Against Marley

In a role bending moment, Eren becomes the infiltrator and Reiner becomes the bewildered. After spying on Marley (much like Reiner did within the scouts), Eren transforms into the Attack Titan during a commemorative Marleyan event killing Willy Tybur, dignities of royal families, and countless innocent men, women, and children.

This declaration of war catalyzes the appearance of the Warhammer Titan (whom Eren eats), the secret plot between Eren and Zeke to destroy all titans, and forces the scouts to cross the sea and battle Marley’s military.

Eren’s act sets off a sequence of military attacks in both directions until one or both parties are defeated.

1 Fall of Wall Maria

When the Colossal Titan destroys Wall Maria, it marks the end of 100 years of peace within the 3 walls on the Island of Paradis and a new chapter in humanity’s war against the titans. After the fall of Wall Maria, the majority of its inhabitants die, including Eren’s mother, Carla, who is eaten by a titan in front of him.

The trauma and shame of Wall Maria’s collapse and the ensuing damage motivates Eren to join the Scout Regiment and begin his journey to exterminate all titans from the Earth. Eren’s overwhelming willpower not only leads to the reveal of his own titan transformation but also enables him to compel previous Attack Titan wielders to his demands.
