10 Most Infamous Horror Movie Plot Flaws

Plot holes can cost horror movies a lot of their experiential value, as even the smallest inconsistency can stop an avid horror fan from repeating a horror outing, irrespective of how well it’s made. Some of the biggest horror movies in Hollywood have had some pretty significant plot holes that have called into question the authenticity of their subject matter.

Some plot holes are more noticeable and are immediately called out by fans. But, in supernatural films with history-backed plots or mythical storylines, inconsistencies are harder to notice unless scrutinized, and some of the most widely loved films in pop culture have had quite a few gaffes in their plots.

9 Signs

10 Most Infamous Horror Movie Plot Flaws

For Signs, M. Night Shyamalan wrote one of his most shocking twists; the Hess family discovered that the aliens stuck in their home are allergic to water, but this is a pretty big plot hole. No foreign species would choose to invade or visit a planet that’s 70% water if a touch of water scalds their skin and could kill them.

Moreover, it’s unlikely that the aliens never came into contact with water as they entered the earth’s atmosphere, especially since water vapor is heavily present all around the earth. It’s unlikely they would venture into human society without any sort of protection if they were this vulnerable to water.

8 Paranormal Activity 3

10 Most Infamous Horror Movie Plot Flaws

Paranormal Activity 3 is actually a prequel to the first Paranormal Activity movie, and it’s in the prequel that the plot hole lies, in way of a joke. Paranormal Activity 3 explored the childhoods of Katie and Kristi, whose adult lives are depicted in the first movie; Katie and her husband Micah invited a psychic to their home who sensed some negative energy and asked them to be careful. This led Micah to make a joke about how they should refrain from inviting Katie’s mom.

But, Katie’s mother Julie dies in the prequel that would come out two years later, so she had lost her mom as a child. It’s possible the makers hadn’t made up their minds about what the prequel would be about when they made the first film, but it’s a glaring error.

7 World War Z

10 Most Infamous Horror Movie Plot Flaws

World War Z introduced several sequences that didn’t exist in the novel World War Z: An Oral History Of The Zombie War, and some of them do not work.

A horde of zombies ravaged through an entire flight compartment, leading people to scream at the top of their lungs. Brad Pitt is shown sitting on the other side of the curtains, along with a few dozing passengers and for some reason, none of them seemed to have any idea of what was happening in the next compartment. A curtain couldn’t hide the screams of dying people, and neither could it stop zombies, so it made no sense that Brad and his fellow first-class passengers would be so oblivious to what was happening on the other side of the curtain.

6 A Quiet Place

The Abbotts would go near the waterfall to talk loudly so their voices would be masked by the roaring water and wouldn’t be audible to the creatures. But, if that worked, why did they not move to an area near the waterfall, at least nearer to Evelyn’s due date? This would have certainly fixed a lot of their problems.

Fans have even pointed out that designing a makeshift living space near the river or any large water body would have helped them stay undiscovered since they mask small noises.

5 The Mummy Returns

10 Most Infamous Horror Movie Plot Flaws

In the sequel to The Mummy, Anck-Su-Namun identified Evelyn as a re-incarnation of Nefertiri. In the past, Anck-Su-Namun and Nefertiri had shared a stormy relationship, and Evelyn was also able to unlock her memories of her past life with the help of the Book of the Dead.

But, Anck-Su-Namun had met Evelyn before in the first movie and did not recognize her as Nefertiri, which is a big plot hole considering the two women shared a difficult relationship when they had known each other.

4 The Eye

10 Most Infamous Horror Movie Plot Flaws

The Pang Brothers have made some of the best Asian horror films both independently and in collaboration. Their 2002 film The Eye earned positive reviews and has been remade into several languages, but fans pointed out this basic flaw in the structure of the plot.

The protagonist, Mun, starts seeing the dead after a cornea transplant, with the implication being the dead donor was either a medium, clairvoyant, or had psychic sensibilities. But, Mun was also able to hear the ghosts, which is not possible unless her newly attained psychic sensitivity was somehow connected to brain activity or with auditory senses, which is impossible.

3 Old

10 Most Infamous Horror Movie Plot Flaws

M. Night Shyamalan’s horror-thriller has quite a few plot holes. The biggest question fans had after watching the movie was how the resort managed to stay uninvestigated by law authorities even though so many tourists had died on their private beach. The film explores test #73 of the ongoing research, which means there must have been hundreds of seemingly healthy people who had lost their lives at the property.

Even if their passports were being destroyed since the management requests guests to leave them in their rooms, nothing would stop relatives and friends from traveling to the resort and inquiring about their loved ones. It’s incredibly difficult to believe that so many disappearances did not raise suspicion over the years.

2 Scream 4

10 Most Infamous Horror Movie Plot Flaws

It’s not statistically possible that Sidney knew so many psychopaths. In a film series where one particular person is being hunted by different people, it’s too much of a coincidence that Sidney just happened to know so many people who are psychopaths and ready to kill.

Post Scream 3, this plot hole became quite glaring; be it her younger cousin Jill, or Billy Loomis, or even his mother Mrs. Loomis, everyone wanted Sidney to die, but this got in the way of the film’s plausibility. A storyline likes this makes sense if the hunted person has something the killers want like money or a prized possession, but the fact that Sidney had so many acquaintances who wanted to kill her for emotional reasons is pretty unbelievable.

1 The Conjuring

There are quite a few plot holes in the Ed And Lorraine series in The Conjuring movies. Ed’s exorcism ritual was at the center of The Conjuring’s climax, but the film contradicts itself on its own mythology. Father Gordon explains that he can’t perform an exorcism on Carolyn since the ritual needs the approval of the Vatican, but, when things took a turn for the worse, Ed performed the exorcism himself, and it worked.

Lorraine later revealed that the Vatican had indeed approved the ritual. However, Ed wasn’t aware of this at the time, which would mean he did not possess the faith or the knowledge of divine intervention needed to carry out an actual exorcism. The film tried to imply that the Vatican somehow gave Ed powers to carry out the ritual, but that’s not consistent with how exorcisms have been shown to work in the movie’s universe.
