Sometimes, the chemistry between two actors can be so strong that this continues offscreen as well, resulting in a real-life romance. Famously, Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn fell in love on the set of Overboard and have been together ever since, while the same happened for Warren Beatty and Annette Bening when they were making Bugsy.

However, not every movie couple that tries to make things work in the real world has as much luck or finds their “fairy-tale ending.” From brief flings such as Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst’s short love story while shooting Spider-Man to more long-lasting relationships like the one between Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, fueled by their Twilight flirtation, these couples may have eventually called it quits, but for a moment, they sent fans into a frenzy and have remained iconic pairings to this day.

10 Johnny Depp & Winona Ryder – Edward Scissorhands (1989-1993)

In Edward Scissorhands, Johnny Depp plays the titular outcast, an artificial humanoid whose creator suffers a heart attack before he can give Edward real hands, leaving him forever “unfinished” and unsettling to society. Winona Ryder portrays his love interest, the beautiful Kim Boggs, a suburban girl who comes to care for Edward and protect him from the prejudice of her neighbors.

Depp and Ryder first started dating after meeting at the New York premiere of Great Balls of Fire! in 1989 according to People, and this courtship continued all throughout their filming of Edward Scissorhands. The two even got engaged five months after their first date but, sadly, they announced the end of this engagement in June 1993.

9 Tobey Maguire & Kirsten Dunst – Spider-Man (2001-2002)

There’s something special about the Spider-Man films, as they keep producing real-life relationships time and time again, starting with Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst in Sam Raimi’s original 2002 film. Here, Maguire stars as the plucky Peter Parker, while Dunst plays his love interest, the always animated Mary Jane Watson. Over the course of the film, they go from classmates to companions to prospective romantic partners – a flirtatious connection further explored in the franchise’s sequels.

These sparks were so strong that they translated offscreen as well, with Raimi revealing to The Sydney Morning Herald in 2007 that Maguire and Dunst “apparently began dating each other… in the middle of first movie… but definitely eventually broke up before the second movie.” Raimi worried that the break-up might affect their chemistry in Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3, but no one could tell, as they continued to deliver passionate performances and make Peter and MJ fans proud.

8 Ben Affleck & Jennifer Lopez – Gigli (2002-2004)

Gigli may be one of the worst romance movies of the 2000s, but it is immortalized in cinema history as the film that brought us “Bennifer,” the iconic coupling of stars Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. In the film, Affleck plays Larry Gigli, a low-ranking Los Angeles mobster who is asked to kidnap the brother of a district attorney. Ricki – portrayed by Lopez – is a secretive assassin sent to oversee Gigli’s jobs and make sure everything goes as planned. In time, the sparks start to fly between the two.

Affleck and Lopez met on the set of Gigli and began dating in mid-2002, according to Vulture. Their relationship was a pop culture phenomenon, and they continued to work with one another, as Affleck appeared in Lopez’s music video for “Jenny from the Block” and they starred together in 2004’s Jersey Girl. While they planned to marry in late 2003, they later called this engagement off due to “excessive media attention.” Still, these stars may still yet find their happy ending, since, as of April 2021, they’ve started dating again.

7 Zac Efron & Vanessa Hudgens – High School Musical (2005-2010)

Disney fans who came of age in the mid 2000s know the relationship timeline of High School Musical’s Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens like the back of their hand. The connection was clear from the first scene of the franchise’s first film, in which Efron’s Troy Bolton and Hudgens’ Gabriella Montez sang “Start of Something New” together at that ski lodge party. As they struggled to break out of social conventions once they got back to school after winter break, the enduring romance between the two delighted Disney Channel viewers the world over.

According to People, Efron and Hudgens’ relationship bloomed as quickly as Troy and Gabriella’s, with the stars falling for one another during the shoot for the first High School Musical in 2005. Sadly, while we’re to assume that Troy and Gabriella stuck it out through college at the end of High School Musical 3: Senior Year, the same couldn’t be said for Efron and Hudgens, who split in 2010.

6 Taylor Lautner & Taylor Swift – Valentine’s Day (2009-2010)

Given that 2010’s Valentine’s Day was so hyper-fixated on that romantic holiday and creating an amorous atmosphere for its surplus of stars, it’s no surprise that love was in the air on set. This was most apparent for Taylor Lautner and Taylor Swift, who played lovestruck teenagers William and Felicia who couldn’t keep their hands off each other in every scene they shared.

The same could be said for both Taylors in the real world too, as the two fell fast for one another in the fall of 2009 whilst shooting Valentine’s Day. Sadly, Swift called it quits at the start of the new year, after only a few months of fun. She later famously sang about their relationship on the 2010 track “Back to December,” according to Billboard.

5 Robert Pattinson & Kristen Stewart – Twilight (2009-2012, 2012-2013)

KStew and RPatz were the “it couple” of the late 2000s, complementing the massive popularity of The Twilight Saga with their own tabloid-friendly chemistry in the real world, which had fans freaking out for years. In the films, Stewart played the shy Bella Swan, a seventeen-year-old girl who moves to the small town of Forks, Washington and falls in love with Robert Pattinson’s Edward Cullen, an alluring but at times aggressive vampire.

Stewart and Pattinson started dating not long after the release of the first film in 2009. Unfortunately, issues arose in the summer of 2012, when it was revealed that Stewart had cheated on Pattinson with her Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders, leading to their break-up, according to People. The two briefly reconciled in October 2012, but they split for good in May 2013.

4 Joe Jonas & Demi Lovato – Camp Rock (2010-2010)

Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens weren’t the only couple to come from a Disney Channel Original Movie, as actor-singers Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato also struck up a love connection on the set of Camp Rock. Lovato portrayed the lively Mitchie, a young girl aspiring to be a singer who finds her voice at the summer music camp Camp Rock, while Jonas played the spoiled Shane Gray, a pretentious pop star who is humbled by Mitchie’s heart.

According to Elle, two years after the 2008 release of Camp Rock, Lovato and Jonas started dating in real life, with their connection only growing stronger as a result of touring together. Sadly, Jonas eventually ended things, deciding that the two were better off as friends and saying, “In this business, it’s really hard to find people who are going to be there for the rest of your life. When I met Demi, I knew right away that our friendship was really strong. I don’t want to lose that ever.”

3 Jennifer Lawrence & Nicholas Hoult – X-Men: First Class (2010-2014)

In 2011’s X-Men: First Class, a pre-Hunger Games Jennifer Lawrence starred as Ravin Darkholme, a.k.a. Mystique. While it wasn’t featured in the comics, the film nonetheless included a romance between her and Nicholas Hoult’s Hank McCoy, better known by fans as Beast. Both characters bonded over having to hide their true identities and appearances to better fit in with the modern world, making for a rather resonant relationship that many fans had fond feelings towards.

The real life chemistry between Lawrence and Hoult was just as crackling, as they began dating during filming in 2010 and stayed together for four years, splitting after the release of X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014, according to Elle. Though the two filmed two more X-Men films after that – X-Men: Apocalypse and X-Men: Dark Phoenix – they encountered no struggles on set and have remained supportive of one another since their split.

2 Andrew Garfield & Emma Stone – The Amazing Spider-Man (2011-2015)

The second Spidey couple to continue their courtship in the real world was Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone of The Amazing Spider-Man. Garfield starred as the titular superhero, delivering a bit of a “darker” take on Peter Parker, while Stone introduced audiences to the sharp-witted Gwen Stacy, Spider-Man’s first love from the comics.

Much like Peter and Gwen, it didn’t take long for Garfield and Stone to fall for one another as, according to Cosmopolitan, the two started dating during the filming of The Amazing Spider-Man in 2010, despite refraining from speaking publicly about their relationship time and time again. Sadly, things didn’t last, as it was widely reported in October 2015 that the pair had split.

1 Tom Holland & Zendaya – Spider-Man: Homecoming (2021-Present)

Once again, an actor playing Spider-Man simply can’t stay away from his leading lady even after the cameras are off. Still, it should come as no surprise that Tom Holland and Zendaya hit it off after seeing how well they worked alongside one another in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home, where Holland’s squirrely Spider-Man meets his match in Zendaya’s more mature MJ.

Though the pair has been dogged by rumors of an offscreen romance for years, they continually denied that they were anything more than friends despite their cinematic chemistry. Such claims came under scrutiny this past July however, when the co-stars were photographed kissing in a car, according to Us Weekly. But if Holland’s adorable birthday post to Zendaya is anything to go by, it looks like they aren’t hiding their love anymore.
