10 Movie Workouts That Can Be Done At Home

There’s nothing more inspiring than a training montage to motivate someone to get to the gym. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 lockdown laws, gyms are closed to the general public and only those lucky enough to have a home gym are able to continue their usual workout routine. Most sports movies have a training montage of some kind, usually before the climax of the film. These scenes show the character slowly improving in strength and skill becoming better versions of themselves.

The first movie to come to mind for many audiences would be Rocky and its sequels, which feature a training montage in every film. Not every workout or training montage in these films utilize a gym; some include no equipment at all, while others improvise. These are ten movie workouts that can be done at home, without needing the amenities of a proper gym.

Disclaimer: While these workouts can be done at home, caution should nevertheless be exercised.

The fourth chapter in the Rocky series featured two training montages, almost one after the other and set in Russia. Preparing for his fight with Ivan Drago, Rocky Balboa completes his training in a barn, adjacent to the cabin he and his team are living in until the fight.

The training montages utilize exercises like the pull-up, running with added resistance, jump rope, lying body raises, shadowboxing, hill sprints, and laying sit up. The other exercises Rocky undertakes involve making use of elements for in his environment, including sawing wood, rock throws, tree chopping, and sled pulling. These types of exercises could be adapted to complement a home environment, such as replacing rock throws with other heavy items.

9 Creed

The first Creed movie successfully did what Rocky V couldn’t – make a film with Rocky training another fighter instead of entering the ring himself. Part of what made Creed work well was due to it being Adonis’ story instead of Rocky’s, as well as the fact Adonis was more likable than Tommy Gunn. The montage before the final fight mainly incorporates different forms of running, including a scene on a treadmill with Adonis wearing an elevation training mask.

Aside from hitting the pads in the gym, Adonis jumps rope and uses his bodyweight for chin-ups. In this montage, he also trains in the hospital, running up flights of stairs and completing one arm pushups. There’s also two shorter training montage when Rocky first starts training Adonis that include pull-ups, running, jump rope, shadowboxing, pad work, catching chickens, and a punching bag workout.

In this 2015 sports drama, former champion boxer Billy Hope attempts to regain the light heavyweight title after the death of his wife and losing custody of his daughter. Billy asks former boxer Tick Wills to train him, who is hesitant at first but agrees following the death of a kid boxer from Tick’s gym.

The workout in Southpaw utilizes standard boxing training methods such as jump rope, jogging, bag work, sit-ups, medicine ball twists, and tire lifts. There’s also a part of the training montage where Tick has tied together multiple pieces of rope to create a barrier for Billy to swerve around and practice his techniques.

7 Creed II

In the second Creed film, Adonis goes up against Viktor Drago, the son of his father’s kills, Ivan Drago. When Rocky refuses to train Adonis for the fight, he turns to Little Duke instead. The training scene here doesn’t show too much aside from some sparring and Adonis boxing and lifting weights underwater. Viktor himself engages in battle rope training and medicine ball walls slams.

Later in the film, Rocky takes Adonis to the desert to train in a rundown backyard style gym, allowing the latter to be reborn as a fighter. The desert workout isn’t really something that can be done at home, but it should be possible outdoors or in a yard. Adonis hacks dirt with a sledgehammer, shadowboxes around a bonfire, pulls a chain attached to a makeshift sled, lifts tires, and runs.

6 Never Back Down

The 2008 MMA film spawned two sequels but neither lived up to the quality of this first film. The plot of Never Back Down can be likened to the original Karate Kid, as it follows teenager Jake Tyler moving to a new town with his mom and brother. Jake has a reputation as a brawler due to a heated fight during one of his previous football matches. This leads to him being coerced into a fight at a party against schoolmate Ryan Mcarthy, an MMA champion.

Following his beat down, Jake begins to learn MMA, which leads to an extending training montage showing his continual improvement. The workout shows Jake throwing concrete blocks, using a ladder as monkey bars, and performing pushups, sit-ups, and kettlebell swings. This is all done alongside running and sparring.

Demi Moore plays Lt Jordan O’Neil in this 1997 action film, a topographical analyst chosen to undertake a series of tests to prove women can handle the same grueling Naval training as men. O’Neil experiences brutal 20 hour days designed to wear down her physical and mental wellbeing.

G.I Jane has a training montage that works to demonstrate O’Neil’s dedication to becoming stronger and making it through the program. She starts by doing pull-ups, standard pushups with a wide leg, and then using chairs to create an extra range of motion with her pushups. Next, she uses the chairs for dips before moving onto one-armed pushups and hanging sit-ups.

Warrior is a sports drama film that involves two estranged brothers entering the same MMA tournament, hoping to win the $5 million prize money. The film wasn’t a financial success but it was very well received by critics and audiences.

The training montage in this film is edited as a split-screen to compare and contrast how each brother is training for the tournament. The workout includes a lot of running, hill sprints, sit-ups, jump rope, and pushups. The character of Tommy (Tom Hardy) also uses a sledgehammer to hit a tire, along with performing tire flips and walking knee raises.

Rocky III picks up a few years after Rocky defeated Apollo Creed and became the heavyweight champion of the world. After he is challenged by newcomer Clubber Lang, Rocky underestimates his opponent and loses the fight. His trainer Mickey dies in the locker room, which further causes Rocky to lose his will to fight.

Apollo Creed decides to train Rocky and teach him a new method of fighting so that he can reclaim his title. This workout is much more focused on speed and agility than the training methods in the previous films. Rocky engages in sprinting, skipping, swimming, boxing footwork, hitting a speed bag, and shadowboxing.

2 The Dark Knight Rises

The final installment in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy places much more of a focus on Bruce Wayne than it does on Batman. Having spent the last eight years retired from his vigilante exploits, this version of Bruce Wayne is no longer in his prime.

The film’s villain, Bane, breaks Bruce and throws him into a prison where the only escape is to make a seemingly impossible leap to freedom. Whilst in the prison, Bruce’s motivation to get back to Gotham and save it from the terror of Bane grows increasingly stronger. He begins to rebuild his body in a sense by continually performing pull-ups, sit-ups, and push-ups to redevelop the strength lost in his retirement.

1 Avengement

A more recent action film, Avengement follows a martial artist called Cain Burgess who finds himself in prison for manslaughter. Cain is sent to the most violent prison in England where his sentence keeps getting extended due to fights, even though they were in self-defense.

Cain continues training his body whilst in prison, which allows him to continually win the fights he finds himself in. His workout includes using two beds to perform dips and hanging leg raises. Cain also incorporates prison push-ups, sit-ups, twist and punch sit-ups, and shadowboxing.
