Knives Out is a simply brilliant film. Somehow, it manages to take one of the most enduringly popular narratives–a locked-room murder that is solved by a brilliant detective–and make it fresh, exciting, and new. A lot of this stems both from the direction (by Rian Johnson), as well as a cast that is basically an embarrassment of riches, with some of the finest actors and actresses working in Hollywood.
Unfortunately, the problem is that it’s a film, and thus it makes sense that those who enjoyed it would find themselves yearning for something similar. Luckily for such viewers, there are quite a few murder mystery shows out there that fill a similar niche.
10 Agatha Christie’s Poirot
Agatha Christie’s most famous creation, the private detective Hercule Poirot, has proven enduringly popular through the decades, particularly as he is portrayed by the great British actor David Suchet. More than perhaps any other person who has interpreted the role, Suchet seems to just inhabit this character. What’s more, the various episodes of the series manage to capture the spirit of Christie’s work in a way that has yet to be surpassed, either on the big screen or the small one.

While not as unequivocally successful as Poirot this series, focusing on Christie’s other great creation, the spinster Miss Jane Marple. Nevertheless, it still manages to capture the sensibility of these very charming mystery novels, and the series is great for those who want a dose of old-fashioned English mystery.

There’s an unspoken rule that some of the best murder mystery shows come from British television, and series like this demonsrate why. It focuses on two middle-aged British women who, unsurprisingly, engage in a bit of sleuthing in order to determine who committed various murders.
It’s an undeniably charming series that doesn’t really try to be anything that it isn’t. It’s a perfect sort of show for someone who wants to settle in with a cup of cocoa and a sweater.
7 Midsomer Murders
It really says something about a television series when it manages to survive the retirement of its major character, and yet that’s exactly what happened with Midsomer Murders. This is truly one of the best British crime dramas out there, and its longevity speaks to the pleasure that it clearly offers its viewers. Unlike some of the other popular shows of this type, it actually focuses on members of the police department. Despite the fact that it focuses on murder, it actually has quite a lot of humor.
6 Broadchurch
Broadchurch is another testament to the fact that there’s just something about the British that makes for tightly-woven and absolutely compelling crime drama. However, it has to be said that one of the major draws of this particular series is the presence of Olivia Colman, who plays one of the two police detectives that are the ones who do the bulk of the investigating. Let’s be real: anything that has the divine Colman in it is definitely worth a watch.
5 Inspector Morse
Inspector Morse has developed a reputation for being one of the best of the British crime dramas, and it’s not hard to see why. For one thing, it’s based on a series of novels, and that always grants a TV series a bit of legitimacy and maturity. For another, the lead actor, John Thaw, is an undeniably compelling screen presence. The show was so successful that it ended up spawning a spinoff, Lewis, which is also well worth a watch).
4 Luther
There’s no denying that Idris Elba is a tremendously talented actor. Time and again, he’s managed to create characters that radiate life and dynamism, even when Elba is unfortunate enough to be in a bad film. Among his numerous other roles, Elba was starred in this series, in which he plays the titular character, a policeman who is very good at what he does but has his own flaws. Indeed, one of the things that makes this show so great is the psychological depth and richness that Elba brings to the role.
3 Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries
One of the things that people often enjoy about murder mysteries is the sense that, at the end, everything will be restored once the murderer is revealed. In that sense, many murder mystery shows are the television equivalent of comfort food, and series like Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries is very much in keeping with this model of series.

One of her finest (if sometimes underappreciated roles) is in this famous British crime drama, in which she plays Jane Tennison, a no-nonsense chief inspector who rises to the top but has to constantly contend with the effect that her gender has on her professional life and the way that her colleagues view her.
