One docuseries that really dives deep into the true-crime narrative and has focused on a series of supposed crimes no one has even heard of before is the hit Oxygen series Smiley Face Killers: The Hunt for Justice.
Following a team of investigators led by a retired detective and officer Kevin Ganon, the series showcases a working theory for the investigators that a series of mysterious deaths involving young college-age men who disappeared for weeks or months, only to be discovered in a body of water. They hypothesize an individual, or individuals, are behind the crimes, leaving a Smiley Face tag somewhere near where the bodies are discovered.
4 I’ll Be Gone In The Dark
A new docuseries is in the throes of capturing the audience’s attention and tells not only the dramatic story of a serial killer finally being caught and the crimes committed against both living & non-living victims, but the double-edged sword that came from the author who helped crack the case.
HBO’s I’ll Be Gone In The Dark is based on author Michelle McNamara’s book of the same name and focuses on her investigation into a series of crimes in the ’70s & ’80s by a criminal she dubbed The Golden State Killer, and her tragic passing shortly before the criminal was caught.
3 Wild Wild Country
One of the strangest and most intriguing docuseries on Netflix right now has to be Wild, Wild Country. The story focuses on some of the most compelling content of any docuseries, from religious movements that transform into cults to would-be leaders becoming armed & dangerous.
The story follows the Rajneeshpuram community led by guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh, a controversial figure whose followers went on to garner cult status in Wasco Country, Oregon. It’s a surreal story that the Duplass Brothers bring to life as the true nature of the community begins to unravel.
2 Cheer
One of the more beloved entries in the genre on Netflix has to be Cheer, the series that followed the Navarro College Bulldogs, a college-level cheerleading squad as they worked to return as champions in their field.
The series followed coach Monica Aldama, many of the staff of her team, and of course, the students who comprised her 40-student cheer squad. Delving into their personal struggles and how it has impacted them, as well as their contributions to the squad, made this an instant hit on Netflix.
1 Hellier
One of the most underrated and brilliant docuseries to date is the independently made series Hellier, found streaming on YouTube and Amazon. The series falls under the paranormal genre, and follows a group of investigators led by Greg and Dana Newkirk, as they investigate a mysterious email they received.
A man claimed he and his family were terrorized by little creatures in Kentucky, only to disappear from all contact. Years later a series of synchronicities led a group to investigate the original claim, only to find something far more complex was occurring. It is thought-provoking and keeps audiences invested throughout the current 2-seasons that have aired thus far.
