10 Pokémon That Would Fit In The Lord Of The Rings Universe

The world of Lord of the Rings is full of heroes, villains, and fascinating creatures. These Pokémon would fit in perfectly.

The realm of Middle-earth is one of the most recognizable settings in all of fantasy, and it contains some of the most iconic creatures. With so many weird and interesting Pokémon designs, there are bound to be some that would fit right in even in such a distinctive world.

While the upcoming Lord of the Rings television series is unlikely to contain any of the following creatures, it’s interesting to imagine how they would suit the world and where they would fit into the war for the Ring of Power.

Perrserker

Perrserker’s grounds for fitting into the world of Lord of the Rings is obvious. With its short stature and large fluffy beard, the Pokémon looks strikingly like a dwarf from the franchise. It even has a helmet of hardened hair.

It is easy to imagine Perrserker in a Gimli role, running around during battles and trying to keep up with the taller and more elegant fighters, especially as Gimli was an underutilized character in Lord of the Rings. Like dwarves, it would also be a formidable ally in battle, possessing vicious claws that can come together and form into sharp daggers when required. Whichever side Perrserker was on, you’d want to keep out of its way once battle commenced.

Braviary

The most similar Pokémon to the Eagles of the Misty Mountains, Braviary is a large flying-type with a majestic and noble appearance. Known for their bravery and loyalty, these Pokémon are almost too good of a match for the eagles. Both represent the wisdom and valor of the skies.

If anything, what sets Braviary apart is its more warlike nature. Braviary is known for being extremely strong and fighting even against adverse odds and when injured. They get more respect from their peers the more battle scars they possess. It is easy to imagine these courageous birds swooping in when everything seems lost and turning the tide of battle.

Empoleon

In a world of heroic kings like Théoden and Aragorn who will lead their people into battle when they have to, the majestic, kingly Empoleon would fit in very well. With its large stature and crown-like headpiece, Empoleon has the appearance to match its power.

Empoleon evolves from Prinlup and is the final form of Piplup, the cutest water-type Pokémon. This arc where the smallest, unlikeliest of creatures grows into the most heroic of beings also goes well with the Lord of the Rings universe, reflecting the journey of the hobbits in the trilogy.

Lycanroc

The evolution of puppy-like Rockruff, Lycanroc in its Midday form resembles a light brown wolf with white features and always looks poised to fight. If anything, Lycanroc is the polar opposite of what Wargs represent in the Lord of the Rings universe. Lycanroc is known for being extremely loyal when it forms a bond and could use its speed and power for good.

The contrasts don’t end there. Where Wargs seem wild and untamed once they get into battle, this Pokémon tends to be calm and observant. Yet they would make for a formidable ally, with razor-sharp rocks jutting from its mane and an eye for its enemy’s weak spots. Lycanroc would have made for the perfect counter to Wargs on the side of the fellowship.

Aegislash

A dual-type steel/ghost Pokémon, Aegislash can change between sword and shield forms while in battle, allowing it to balance a powerful attack with an almost unbeatable defense. In a world of magical swords, as well as some iconic shields, Aegislash would be a good addition, adding an extra property that hasn’t been seen before in that universe.

Indeed, with the tide changing so frequently during battles in Lord of the Rings, such as with the arrival of Gandalf at Helm’s deep in The Two Towers, Aegislash’ ability to switch to its more appropriate form would be a boon. However, Aegislash also possesses a great power to rule over people that has been exploited by power-hungry kings in the past. In the wrong hands, Aegislash could come to represent something similar to the Ring of Power.

Trevenant

Trevenant is perhaps an example of what could have happened had Saruman, as one of the most powerful beings in Lord of the Rings, been allowed to continue his destruction of Fangorn Forest, home of the Ents. While Trevenant might look from a distance like an Ent himself, resembling essentially a sentient tree with legs and arms, there is something slightly darker to the Pokémon.

As its dual-type ghost/grass nature indicates, Trevenant can be a sinister creature that devours those who are foolish enough to disturb the peace of the forest it inhabits. In contrast to the indecisive Ents, Trevenant is known to inflict its wrath upon anyone who cuts down the trees or disturbs the nature of its home.

Gardevoir

With its serene air and green and white color scheme that is reminiscent of nature, Gardevoir could easily be mistaken for an elf-like creature in the universe of Lord of the Rings. Gardevoir uses its psychic abilities to read the future and sense when danger is coming to its trainer, not dissimilar to some of the powers the elves display in the trilogy.

With the ability to unleash all its psychic power at once and create a small black hole, Gardevoir would be a powerful addition to the universe. Gardevoir is an evolution of Kirlia, who has an alternative evolution as the knightly Gallade, whose courtesy and swordsmanship make it another good fit for the world of Lord of the Rings.

Mismagius

With its mysterious nature and wizard/witch-like appearance, Mismagius would make for an interesting addition to Middle-earth. A part of what makes Mismagius such a good fit for the world is the fact that the Pokémon just looks magical, as well as a little mischievous. It is easy to imagine the Pokémon as a wild card in the universe, ready to throw a spanner in the works of the Fellowship’s plans, or indeed, of Sauron’s.

Mismagius is also not a creature anyone would particularly want to encounter. Mismagius has cries that cause headaches and hallucinations and, while it can be benevolent as well, it would be foolish not to be careful with one around. Not a Pokémon the heroes would want to encounter deep in the Mines of Moria or the Paths of the Dead.

Morgrem

Known for being devious and cunning rather than outright evil, Morgrem has a devil-like appearance with long claws and a long nose that resembles a horn on its head. Morgrem has a goblin-like nature, resorting to tricks to kill unwitting opponents whenever it can, rather than facing them head-on.

Morgrem is also a Pokémon known for using tricks to lure people into forests in order to get them lost, and forests in Middle-earth can be especially powerful and terrifying places. Morgrem’s final evolution turns it into the huge, beefy Grimmsnarl, a troll-like Pokémon that would be a formidable opponent on the side of Sauron.

Hydreigon

With its dark silhouette and thinner wings, the dual-type dark/dragon Pokémon Hydreigon flying overhead would look a lot like a Nazgûl rider on a Fellbeast. Hydreigon is one of the ugliest Dark-type Pokémon and is known not just for its formidable appearance, with three sets of wings and a mane of purple spikes, but also for its wild nature, attacking anything that moves.

Known for laying waste to innocent villages, Hydreigon’s temperament is almost similar to Smaug’s as much as a Fellbeast. If Sauron were able to tame such a creature then slaying it would be a challenge even for the might of the fellowship.
