Things move pretty quickly in the gaming world; a few years ago, Sony’s PlayStation 4 was the uncontested king of console gaming. Today, it’s almost a year out of date, replaced by the PS5. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t games worthy of returning to on the now-outdated system.

Some of the most replayable games in history belong to the PlayStation’s fourth generation. Between PlayStation’s very first mascot, a mass-murdering treasure hunter, and a web-slinging superhero, there’s more than enough reason to keep the PS4 plugged in for the foreseeable future.

10 Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time (2020)

The original Crash Bandicoot trilogy on the first PlayStation console featured some of the best Naughty Dog games of all time, but the developer moved on from the character a short while later. Crash seemed to be doomed after that as he was passed from one developer to another. However, the remake of the first three games under the name N-Sane Trilogy introduced new, younger fans to the series and it started somewhat of a Crash renaissance.

Crash Bandicoot 4 followed three years later, and it was faithful to the character and revisited some iconic locations while also introducing a few new and retooled mechanics. Between collecting the hundreds of gems, beating all the Flashback Tapes, and replaying the entire thing in “N-Verted” mode, Crash Bandicoot 4 was built to be replayed.

9 Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018)

Movie tie-in games are almost never good, as they’re simply another way to market the movie, but Spider-Man 2 went above and beyond on the PlayStation 2. It had a fully immersive New York that players could swing around in, and it laid the groundwork for all Spider-Man games to follow. Just as Spider-Man 2 was one of the most replayable games on the PS2, Marvel’s Spider-Man is more addictive than almost any other PS4 game that came before it.

Simply swinging around in the Big Apple in Marvel’s Spider-Man is fun and can consume hours, even days, of gamers’ time. The PS4 game not only takes what made the PS2 game so special, but it combines that web-slinging and impressively rendered NY with Arkham Asylum-influenced combat. Racking up combos when beating the living daylights out of thugs keeps players from ever wanting to put the game down.

8 Hitman II (2018)

From the very first game, Hitman: Codename 47, the assassin series has been endlessly replayable. The best thing about the games is that there are hundreds of different ways to go about every mission and assassinate each target, and that’s never been more true than with Hitman II.

When it comes to the latest trilogy in the series, they are very close to perfect, and Hitman III is generally regarded as the best by fans and critics. But, while that might be true, Hitman II is still more replayable. Hitman II has the perfect balance of stealth and that very unique brand of Hitman humor, which was lacking in the third game.

7 Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End (2016)

Though some Redditors think Uncharted 4 is overrated, it’s a small minority of the gaming community, as it’s more replayable than any other Uncharted game. Where the earlier games had fairly small areas, the locations in A Thief’s End are, in some cases, bordering on open-world.

Given how enormous each level is, it makes it that much harder to find all of the collectible treasure in the game. However, one reason to revisit the Madagascar chapter alone is that there’s a secret unlockable that will make finding treasure easier. If people knock over the Rock Cairns in Madagascar, they’ll unlock a special ability in which the DualShock vibrates whenever players are close to treasure.

6 Ghost of Tsushima (2020)

Ghost of Tsushima was, in some ways, the PlayStation 4’s swan song, as it was the last truly great game of the console. It took advantage of the console’s capabilities, as it’s one of the most visually stunning games of the console, has a huge open world, and features the best mechanics of any samurai game.

For gamers holding out to buy the PlayStation 5, Ghost of Tsushima will make them forget that the console exists. It’s isn’t just because Tsushima has the most difficult bosses that it’s replayable, but because the Japanese culture and the first Mongol invasion are so immersive. There are also tons of collectibles to find and challenges to beat that’ll take months.

5 Little Big Planet 3 (2014)

Little Big Planet 3 is a kids’ game that adults don’t have to feel ashamed about playing. There’s a lot of strategy involved in the platformer, and it doesn’t just help children learn how to think logically, but it’s a fantastically detailed puzzle game for grown-ups, too.

There’s a huge emphasis on creativity in the game, as players build their own levels, characters, and even vehicles, which makes gamers of all ages return to it over and over again. Of all the video games that are described as a “sandbox,” that’s no more true than with Little Big Planet 3, as it’s basically a virtual sandbox.

4 Cities: Skylines (2015)

When it was first released in 2013, the hotly anticipated Sim City reboot had gameplay-impeeding problems such as server errors and a heinous always-online requirement. On top of that, there wasn’t much room for creativity, as the cities worked best if buildings and roads were built like standard street blocks.

However, Cities: Skylines followed two years later, and it was a massive improvement on the EA competitor. The game was more realistic, but that didn’t come at the expense of entertainment, and it’s generally considered to be one of the best simulators of the console generation. Over a hundred hours could easily be sunk into the game without even realizing it—and that’s just dealing with traffic congestion.

3 Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018)

Rockstar is at the forefront of open-world gaming, but, as the developer puts more and more detail into each game, its output gets less frequent. Red Dead Redemption 2 was released eight years after its predecessor, bu,t though that might have had the more obsessive fans impatiently twiddling their thumbs, the game was full of content.

Just like the first game in the series, players roam around a giant desert landscape full of shoot-outs, heists, and horseriding, along with running into hundreds of completely unique NPCs. The game is so big that the casual gamer probably wouldn’t 100% complete it until Red Dead 3 is released, whenever that may be.

2 Dishonored 2 (2016)

Dishonored 2 became an instant hit, as it was a stealth game unlike any other. Players have supernatural powers where they can manipulate time and partially see into the future. But, gamers can choose to forfeit these powers, making the game harder and adding to the replay value.

Not only that, but the stealth game is similar to the Hitman series in that players can choose their own paths, of which there are many, to assassinate the targets. Players can also choose to abstain from killing by playing through the game using non-lethal stealth. The levels could be played a dozen times over without once doing the same thing.

1 Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (2015)

Along with Hitman and Dishonored 2, Metal Gear Solid V is another stealth video game that will keep gamers up until the early hours of the morning. It’s interesting that, of all the genres, it’s stealth games that tend to be the most replayable. But, it makes sense, as most time spent on logical thinking, and doing the slightest thing differently could change the players’ entire path, making for a completely different course of action.

However, Metal Gear Solid V is more than a mere stealth game. It combines many different gameplay mechanics, as there’s a sandbox level of freedom, with it being set in the open-world of a Soviet-occupied Afghanistan. There’s also no shortage of customization options, which is why Metal Gear Solid V is better than IV.
