10 Reality Shows That Are Actually Spin-Offs (& Their IMDb Score)

Reality TV may not be known for highbrow content, but hit reality shows often yield many spin-offs of varying critical and commercial success.

Reality televsion shows are a guilty pleasure that some like to admit to or like to keep their little secret. They’re strangely addicting for its intense display of drama. They also offer an inside look into the lives of its main stars and all the mishaps that could go wrong along with the happy moments in their lives.

Who can’t recall a famous outburst on a segment of The Real Housewives of Orange County? Or any other version for that matter, since the original Real Housewives spawned many spin-offs. There are actually a ton of reality shows that people might have forgotten are spin-offs of other famous reality television shows. And while they did just as well as getting fans hooked on the drama, that didn’t necessarily translate to their rankings on IMDb.

10 Here Comes Honey Boo Boo (2012-2014) 2.6

One of TLC’s famed child celebrities was a young girl named Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson. Many remember her from her own reality show titled Here Comes Honey Boo Boo that took viewers inside her family life in Georgia. The pageant contestant rose to fame in Toddlers & Tiaras, which led to her own spin-off.

Fans went on a whirlwind of family drama and misadventures for four seasons before its cancellation. The show even led to another spinoff show, but this time it focused on Alana’s mother, Mama June, and her journey to weight loss.

9 The Bachelorette (2003): 3.4

Its not hard to piece together that The Bachelorette is a spinoff of the highly acclaimed reality contestant show, The Bachelor. Just as The Bachelor had fans on the edge of their seat to see who gets the final rose, it was time for a switch in the main star.

The dating game show first aired in 2003 with a former contestant of The Bachelor getting her shot at love. The rules mimicked that of the parent show and often cast a runner-up as the bachelorette. The reality show has done its job, eliciting gasps and shocked reactions from dedicated fans.

8 The Hills (2006-2010): 3.5

The Hills is a reality television staple of the 2000s. For those who aren’t so invested in reality television, they might not have known that The Hills is actually a spinoff. It might also be due to the fact that the spin-off, despite a poor score, was actually more popular than the parent show.

The spinoff would followed a former cast member of Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County. It chronicled the lives and drama of a group of young women in Los Angeles, and at the center was Lauren Conrad. There was a few other cast members that later got their own reality shows, including Audrina Patridge, Whitney Port, and Kristin Cavallari.

7 Kendra (2009-2011): 3.5

Back in the 2000s, the Playboy Mansion was a hub for pop culture and reality television. In 2005, the reality show The Girls Next Door showcased the drama-filled and luxurious lives of Hugh Hefner’s girlfriends and the events related to Playboy. The success of the show led to many spin-off series.

One, in particular, revolved around the Playmate Kendra Baskett. The show, Kendra, moved away from the parent show and instead focused on Kendra’s life after leaving the mansion. This included her engagement, marriage, and family. A sequel show later followed, but on a different network.

6 Teen Mom (2009): 3.6

Teen Mom brought light to the struggle and drama of being a young mom, and the reality show is actually a spinoff of 16 and Pregnant. It made sense to develop a spin-off show that would continue documenting the stories of the young teenage mothers from the show, and Teen Mom would focus on the moms, their partners, and their families adjusting to the inclusion of a new baby.

Viewers saw it all as relationships deteriorated, families broke apart, and the lives of the teen moms took a new route. The success of the show led to many more spin-offs that included new cast members.

5 Gypsy Sisters (2013-2015): 3.9

My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding opened it’s audience’s eyes to a new culture in the United States. It had fans hooked for not only its family drama and brawls, but for the big and attention-grabbing wedding dresses. Believe it or not, this show was also a spin-off of a British TV series as well.

The American version then birthed a spin-off titled Gypsy Sisters. The main characters and family appeared in a number of episodes in the original series. The dynamics and family drama was popular enough to garner them their own show based around their lives as Romani-Americans.

4 Bethenny Ever After (2010-2012): 4.8

Bethenny Ever After can be titled as a spin-off because it followed the life of a former The Real Housewives of New York City star Bethenny Frankel. Frankel left the original show in 2010 and started her own reality documentary show based around her new life of getting married and a newborn baby.

The series chronicled just about everything as Frankel adjusted to married life and family while continuing her business ventures. The show did well and even outranked Married to Medicine in 2013. The show was later ended as Frankel focused on her talk show.

3 Donnie Loves Jenny (2015-2016): 5.4

Many know Mark Wahlberg for his rise in Hollywood as an actor. But many might not have put two and two together that his older brother is Donnie Wahlberg, one of the original members of the boy band New Kids on the Block.

In 2014, the Wahlberg family opened their doors to fans and gave them inside look into their lives and their joint business, Wahlburgers. From the success of the show came a new spin-off about Donnie Wahlberg and his wife Jenny McCarthy. Donnie Loves Jenny was all about their new lives as a married couple.

2 Vanderpump Rules (2013): 5.4

A show’s success can be measured by how many spin-offs it generates. Vanderpump Rules happens to be a spin-off of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. But it doesn’t necessarily focus on one main character. The show revolves around Lisa Vanderpump’s employees at her restaurant SUR.

Audiences get caught up in the drama of the personal lives of the employees, their boss, and their strive to make a name for themselves in the business. The show later led to its own spin-off, but its main stars were two employees from the parent show.

1 Total Bellas (2016): 5.8

Professional wrestling has been in the spotlight for a long time. WWE has developed not only celebrity wrestlers outside the ring, but also reality shows with them as the stars. The first reality television show was Total Divas that gave wrestling fans and everyday reality TV fans a look into the hectic lives of the female wrestlers.

The show gained moderate success, but two main wrestlers shined brighter and got their own spin-off. The Bella Twins made waves in the wrestling world and got a chance to showcase their personal lives on television. Audiences saw it all, from Brie Bella’s marriage, her role as a mother, and her retirement from WWE. The same went for Nikki Bella as she made the decision to retire after injury, her relationships evolved, and her future family changed.
