10 Reasons Grand Theft Auto Vice City & San Andreas Deserve Remasters

Each consecutive game developed by Rockstar seems to be more ambitious and influential than the last. The developer’s latest game, Red Dead Redemption 2, is one of the most beautiful looking open-world games of all time, and before, that Grand Theft Auto V changed online gaming forever. But it’s impossible to ignore what laid the foundation for those games. Vice City and San Andreas changed everything.

The PS2 and Xbox games weren’t exactly footnotes in the developer’s canon of games, but given that so much time has passed, they aren’t dusted off all that often anymore. However, older games are constantly getting remastered, whether it’s Tony Hawk or Crash Bandicoot, and both these games deserve a remaster for very different reasons.

10 Vice City: Fans Haven’t Seen Vice City Since 2005

10 Reasons Grand Theft Auto Vice City & San Andreas Deserve Remasters

San Andreas might feature the best map of the PS2 generation of GTA games, and it’s much more vast than Vice City, but San Andreas has been done to death. Los Santos and the surrounding San Andreas areas were the locations for GTA V, a game that fans have widely played.

And though Rockstar tends to reuse open world cities, whether it’s San Andreas or Liberty City, the fictional version of New York that was seen in GTA III and GTA IV is a sight for sore eyes. It hasn’t been seen in a video game for more than 15 years. However, it may still return in a future game, as it’s a location where GTA VI could occur.

9 San Andreas: It’s Still Seen As Revolutionary Today

10 Reasons Grand Theft Auto Vice City & San Andreas Deserve Remasters

Though the Grand Theft Auto series has been influential since the very first game, and it’s the gold standard of open-world games, nothing prepared the world how much of an impact San Andreas would have. From its RPG elements to just how interactive the world was, to its satirical storytelling, the game pulled off things developers are still struggling at balancing today.

A San Andreas remaster would be like a remaster of The Beatles’ Abbey Road. It might not necessarily need a remaster, as the original is so perfect, but it’d serve as a reminder that the game still exists. And it’d give younger audiences, who might not have experienced it the first time around, a chance to finally play it.

8 Vice City: It Has The Best Music

10 Reasons Grand Theft Auto Vice City & San Andreas Deserve Remasters

There’s no denying that San Andreas has some bangers on its soundtrack with all of its different radio stations, but Vice City has an incredible mix of guilty pleasures and ’80s classics. Not only that, but the radio stations are superior too, as there are many more jokes and bizarre conversations between the presenters.

With remasters, there often comes tons of extra content too. The new generation of consoles has so much more space than the PlayStation 2 and Xbox did, which means that fans could get more stations and more ’80s classics if there ever was a remake.

7 San Andreas: Could Shed Light On The Mount Chiliad Mystery

10 Reasons Grand Theft Auto Vice City & San Andreas Deserve Remasters

When it comes to games getting remastered these days, there are not only remasters but full-on remakes that look better and play much better. And on top of that, many remakes, whether it’s Shadow of the Colossus or Final Fantasy VII, include references and Easter eggs.

There are ton of fan theories surrounding the series, but one of the most compelling is the mystery around what’s going on with Mount Chiliad. There have always been secrets about it, and it culminated in a puzzle in the form of a mural in the Mount Chiliad cable car station in GTA V, but it still remains unexplained. A San Andreas remaster could shed light on that, or at least give players more clues.

6 Vice City: It Would Make The Best Use Out Of The First Person Perspective

10 Reasons Grand Theft Auto Vice City & San Andreas Deserve Remasters

Grand Theft Auto V was originally released for the PlayStation 3, but it has been re-released for both the PS4 and PS5 with added content since then. One of the most fascinating things about the PS4 remaster was the inclusion of the first-person camera, which was a first for the series.

Though it was more of a novelty than anything, players would get the most use out of it with a remastered version Vice City, as the neon-lit open-world suits this perspective really well.

5 San Andreas: It Has The Best Characters

Though Tommy Vercetti is a great protagonist, as he’s possibly the most criminal of all the playable characters in the series, nothing beats the characters of San Andreas. Not only does CJ have an incredible character arc, but he has a supporting cast of characters that bring the game to life.

From the dirty cop Frank Tenpenny, who is voiced brilliantly by Samuel L. Jackson, to Big Smoke, one of the best supporting characters in the whole series, Rockstar was seemingly showing off with how creative they could get in this game. Fans would love to see them brought back to life and even enhanced.

4 Vice City: RPG Elements Could Be Added

10 Reasons Grand Theft Auto Vice City & San Andreas Deserve Remasters

One of the reasons why San Andreas was so influential was because it added elements of RPG. Being that Vice City came before, the game was missing those elements.

If the game was to be revisited, it wouldn’t be hard to add these RPG elements, but it would make a big difference. Whether it’s climbing the property ladder or lifestyle options, the fun of Vice City and the satire of the series could be built on tenfold by adding these gameplay aspects.

3 San Andreas: Could Add References To GTA V

10 Reasons Grand Theft Auto Vice City & San Andreas Deserve Remasters

Though GTA V is eight years old at this point, it is still one of the most popular games today and is still being played long after its release. Few other console games have had such longevity, but it also means that players know the world of Los Santos and San Andreas like the back of their hands.

However, what could make San Andreas fresh, even though it’s the same map as the fifth game, is adding references to the best seller. Rockstar are known to have their characters cross over between games, whether it’s Claude, the protagonist of GTA III, appearing in San Andreas, or Johnny Klebitz, the protagonist of The Lost and Damned, appearing in GTA V. It’d be incredible if Trevor rocked up out of nowhere in the middle of a San Andreas remaster.

2 Vice City: Its 1980s Setting Is Unique

10 Reasons Grand Theft Auto Vice City & San Andreas Deserve Remasters

It has been a long time since Rockstar has set a GTA game in the past, as GTA V and GTA IV were both set in the present day. And though San Andreas was technically set in the 1990s, it wasn’t actually based that long before the game’s release in 2004.

The 1980s setting brought the neon lights, outlandish fashion, and over-the-top looking sports cars of the time. There hasn’t been any other game that has ever looked like it, even in the 20 years since its release. And a remastered version of the game is the likeliest way players will get to experience that kind of tone in a game again.

1 San Andreas: It Could Play With The Bigfoot Myth

In the original game, loads of fans speculated that Big Foot was roaming around the forest. So many players claimed that they saw it, but there has never been any proof.

However, Rockstar has poked fun at the myth a few times now, as the Los Santos Police Department’s badge features an image of the creature in GTA V, and one of Trevor’s missions sees him uncovering a hunter camouflaged as Bigfoot too. So the developer could play on this even further with a remaster, and maybe even add him into the area where fans claimed to see him. It’d be the greatest bit of fan service that acknowledges the franchise’s history.
