The Guardians of the Galaxy are Marvel’s beloved rag-tag group of space vigilantes looking to protect the universe from intergalactic and inter-dimensional threats. Since the late ’70s, Star-Lord has led Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot with his roguish charm and debonair swagger. But as popular as Peter Quill is, his position as leader of the team has been called into question.
He might be a charmer, but his skills as a leader could definitely be up for debate, especially after the Thanos debacle in Infinity War. In fact, many fans consider Rocket Raccoon the more qualified team member for the position. Quill definitely has his redeeming moments, but if it’s a question of skill, the ringtail has him beat by a country mile.
Group Goal Oriented
His methods might not be the most practical on the subject, but at the core of the matter, Rocket’s motivations in various Guardians adventures benefit the team more than Quill’s. Granted, those motivations were typically concerned with financial gain, but it’s to benefit the entire crew, not just him and Groot.
One of the recurring themes in Guardians lore is that Rocket is always trying to land some big score and better outfit the Milano. This is Rocket’s way of looking out for the entire team. Without a better-equipped ship, the less prepared they are for better-paying gigs. He might have had his moments away from the group, but unlike Star-Lord, he has a better vision as to what will benefit the team more.
Indefinitely More Resourceful
Star-Lord was merely adopted by the cosmic forces of the universe outside of Earth, but Rocket was born into it from the very beginning. After escaping Halfworld, Rocket had a decorated career while Quill was with Yondu and the Ravagers for years.
Working alongside his fellow Halfworlders, fighting in the Toy War, and even occasionally working with the Nova Corps have equipped Rocket with influence and a paw in several planetary pies. It’s factors like this that make it logical that Rocket would know about places like Nidavellir in the MCU, as well as knowing his way around the galaxy better than most.
Increased Resilience
While his celestial parentage is definitely beneficial, Star-Lord has been shown to take quite a beating in his career. Just because he’s part space-deity doesn’t mean he’s impervious to permanent damage. Rocket, on the other hand, was literally built to sustain just about anything the universe could throw at him.
Genetic mutations, increased intelligence, and a cybernetic skeleton are just a few perks that came with surviving Halfworld’s experiments. Not only does Rocket’s improved physical form sustain better than Quills, but he also has the guy beat on a mental and technological level as well.
Better Piloting Skills
There’s sort of a running gag in various forms of Guardians media about who truly pilots/captains the Milano. But while Star-Lord has definitely had the position longer, that doesn’t necessarily mean he was better. As demonstrated time and time again, Rocket has significantly better experience flying various forms of spacecraft.
From bullet-proof mining vehicles seen in the first Guardians of the Galaxy to refurbished and rewired Nova Corps ships, Rocket can tame it as long as it has a steering apparatus. Not to mention that there was an entire comic run that had the Guardians stranded on earth because Quill literally crashed the Milano in the Grounded storylines.
Tactical Prowess
Star-Lord is always pretty prepared for the heat of battle, especially with those element blasters of his. However, he’s been known to be more than a little impulsive at times. While Rocket is just as guilty, his spontaneous nature paired with his quick-thinking has saved the team more than a few times, much to the viewer’s/reader’s relief.
Rocket, by no exaggeration, is one of the smartest tacticians in Marvel, he’s able to work, fight, or explode his way out of almost any situation. From escaping the clutches of the Collector using his own fortress against him to breaking free of a Venom-like symbiote, Rocket’s always got some sort of plan ready to go should things go screwy.
Genius-Level Intellect
He might sound like it, but Rocket is without a doubt the brains of the Guardians. Along with instantly being able to understand alien languages like Groot’s and strategizing the optimal plan of attack, he’s equipped with a superior intellect that has proven more than a little useful on several missions.
He might be the golden boy of the team, but Star-Lord tends to be a total himbo at times. Rocket, on the other hand, is a man on a mission and he’s fully conscious of what could be at stake. He might need a few friendly reminders on occasion, but he knows how to keep his head in the game.
Better Under Pressure
Rocket might be jaded, but it’s his hardboiled persona that makes him work so perfectly under pressure. The team might be careening down the side of an alien prison, he might be imprisoned in the Kiln, or overpowered by renegade Ravagers, but Rocket will always find a way to get the upper hand.
Star-Lord’s tendency to fly off the handle doesn’t exactly make him popular. At least when Rocket gets hot-headed, he doesn’t risk the fate of the universe. If Rocket can manage an escape plan with armed guards and rioting prisoners in a matter of minutes, there’s no telling what he could have done with better prep time.
Battle Experience
There are few characters in the Marvel Multiverse, comics or otherwise, who have seen and done as much as Rocket Raccoon has. Star-Lord might have gotten himself in and out of many harrowing situations in his time, but if it’s a contest of survival, Rocket has him topped multiple times over.
Rocket has worked as a mercenary, fought in wars, dealt with evil A.I., and been on a quest to the edge of the universe. Next to maybe Nebula, Rocket is one of the most seasoned warriors in the galaxy and as a result, can hold his own with or without assistance from his buddy Groot. Honestly, it’s no wonder he’s so good in a multitude of scraps, he’s had time to practice.
Emotional Maturity And Fortitude
If there’s one field both Star-Lord and Rocket can meet with relatively equal measure, it’s emotional development. Using the MCU as the most prominent example, audiences have seen both characters go from rag-tag would-be heroes to defenders of the galaxy with the battle scars to show for it. But where Rocket has Quill beat is in terms of emotional maturity.
Rocket has grown from the rodent with the attitude problem to an emotionally conscious defender of the universe. Because out of all the MCU’s great characters, he’s arguably the one who has lost the most and had it all given back to him thanks to his heroism. From being a living science experiment to becoming part of a family unit, Rocket is definitely a character that changed for the better.
Sees The Bigger Picture
He might have his over-emotional and even selfish moments, but compared to Star-Lord, Rocket has a better view of the bigger picture in various forms of media. In the movies, comics, games, and so on, Rocket has many moments in the series that are both profound and heartbreaking.
This notion could be summed up in his quote “Me personally, I could lose a lot.” Yes, Quill cares immensely about the team, but his main concern is typically Gamora. Again, see the Infinity War films for evidence. But Rocket has lost so much and taken too many beatings to not see that the galaxy is bigger than the Guardians alone. He might be temperamental, but his perspective, experience, and development have proven that the reins of the team belong more to him than to his stuck-in-the-seventies companion.
