Iconic NYC sitcoms, Seinfeld and Friends, have devoted and defensive fandoms. Here are the 10 funniest memes in honor of the long-running rivalry.

Decades have passed and TV has changed a lot, but Friends and Seinfeld continue to enjoy mass appeal. Both NYC sitcoms are centered around a rag-tag pack of friends and are often pitted against each other. And while the similarities between the two shows are striking, they have major differences.

Jerry Seinfeld’s eponymous show is the predecessor to Friends and focuses more on mundane aspects of life. Friends, on the other hand, has six lead characters and still enjoys a mainstream status. There is a strong argument that Seinfeld did some things better than Friends, but the jury is out. That said, one of the best ways to assess this competition is through the medium of memes.

Judgy McJudgerson

A post shared by Billy Mumphrey (@billymumphreysdownfall)

Everyone loves Seinfeld’s Elaine Benes. The only gal pal in the group, she stands out among her friends. She’s smart, funny, perfect parts quirky, and endearing.

In season 8’s “The Abstinence,” the group experiments with sexual restraint, and as a result, George’s intellect increases. Elaine, however, thinks she’s losing her grip. She stands in front of an auto shop and stares at rotating tires for a while, smiling, clapping and rotating her head in the direction of the tires.

The Judgy McJudgerson standing nearby gives her a condescending look — the same kind any Seinfeld fan would give a Friends’ fan or vice versa.

The Bat Slap

The Batman slapping Robin meme has been around for years and is one of the more commonly used meme templates. And Seinfeld fans found a way to spin the meme and use it against their rival fandom.

This particular meme leaves no doubt behind and precisely conveys what any Seinfeld fan would want their rivals, and people in general, to know: Friends is not better than Seinfeld. That said and conveyed, many would agree that both shows have equal merit and a different take on humor.

Took It Too Far

Back in 2019, when news.com.au, an Australian news site, asked its Twitter followers to “settle” the question on which sitcom was better, Seinfeld fans spared no effort in securing their win. They put forward their arguments and conveyed the message through the language of memes, as seen here.

The short clip, taken from, season 8’s “The Chicken Roaster,” shows Kramer getting hit in the face by a beam of red light coming off of the unusually large chicken sign across the street from his apartment. Whilst using the word “uncultured” for Friends’ fans is way too harsh and uncalled for, Seinfeld fans have made it clear that they are not to be trifled with.

Defensive Fandoms

If a fan deems it reasonable to stand with a placard right in front of the beloved gang of six carrying the message that Seinfeld is the superior sitcom, best believe the rivalry has taken on a life of its own. Fans of both sitcoms endlessly lock horns at the slightest opportunity.

However ruthless Seinfeld fans may get, the fact that both fandoms rival time and again only proves that the debate is unresolvable and the fandoms are in for for the long haul.

That Had To Hurt

Fans of both sitcoms vividly remember that Courteney Cox, who played Monica Geller on Friends, had a cameo on Seinfeld. She guest-starred as Jerry’s fake wife, Meryl, one of the low-key villains on Seinfeld, in season 5’s “The Wife,” and they parted with the words, “we’ll always have pancakes.” Meryl shared Jerry’s laundry discount and the two seemed to be compatible. But they moved too fast, which ultimately derailed their relationship.

“The Wife” was a memorable Seinfeld episode and gave fans a peek into Cox’s early days, before she became a seasoned actor, and dazzled fans with her Monica Geller. Here, this meme asserts she also has some strong opinions about the comedy writing of 1994, the same year that Friends began.

If They Lived In the Same Building

A post shared by Billy Mumphrey (@billymumphreysdownfall)

What if Jerry lived in the same building as Monica and Co.? Both Jerry and Monica dealt with their share of noise complaints.

In season 2’s “The Apartment,” Jerry complained about loud neighbors who’d moved upstairs and in Friends, Monica’s neighbor, Mr. Heckles, was the one to make noise complaints. While Mr. Heckles has also inspired hilarious memes, Jerry’s loud, novice musician neighbors are the inspiration for this one.

Hey Now!

When people try and convince me that #Friends is better than #Seinfeld pic.twitter.com/wKFBICkHps

… says a Seinfeld fan who refuses to be convinced otherwise. Anyone who has watched Seinfeld knows the ragtag group was set in their ways, so why should their fandom be any different? After all, determination, devotion, and the unwillingness to change or give up preferences are the inevitable qualities of being diehard fans.

This is a quote from the season 9 episode, “The Serenity Now,” but Seinfeld fans could easily say this to anyone who tries to convince them that Friends is the superior sitcom.

Ouch

Seinfeld fans sure know how to pick their memes. It’s no secret that Elaine was the most intelligent, feisty, and assertive member of the gang. She’d also crank things up a notch, and sometimes her anger would manifest in violence.

Elaine had no reservations in grabbing George’s toupee and throwing it out the window or thrashing him to the ground. She once scuffled with George’s father, Frank Costanza, and so why shouldn’t she be the face of the meme depicting a rivalry gone too far?

Costanza On A Chilly NYC Day

A post shared by Champagne Video (@champagnevideostore)

The long-running rivalry is summarized by this meme and by the man, George Costanza, himself. This clip is taken from season 5’s “Dinner Party,” where George shows up in a Gore-Tex coat.

Being the cheapskate that George Costanza is, he has trouble following why the gang must bring something to the dinner party they are going to. As a compromise, he suggests they bring Pepsi instead of wine, and tries to make a strong case for it. This diligent meme creator has replaced the words “Wine” with “Friends” and “Pepsi” with “Seinfeld,” and it’s comedic gold.

It’s Not A Competition

A post shared by Wild Drawberries (@wilddrawberries)

This meme echoes the sentiments of many in the caption, saying, “not everything needs to be versus.” The alternative opinion merits special attention because of the similarities between the male characters of the two sitcoms. Both Jerry and Chandler have the most money, they are funny characters, and look after a friend/roommate aka the moocher.

Similarly, the moochers in the sitcoms, Joey and Kramer, keep coming up with get-rich-quick schemes, seem to somehow have luck with the ladies, and have had odd jobs throughout. It’s a fair analysis, and on one hand, Friends lacks the sophisticated humor of Seinfeld, but on the other hand, Seinfeld is short of the well-rounded character arcs seen in the former.
